London Brockhampton 1996 1860198511 / 9781860198519 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
288 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps. "Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps, the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed the tactics and weap- onry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300,000 personnel and 23,000 aircraft, but there was the immediate threat of stringent post-war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The Chief of Air Staff, Trenchard, needed a successful example of the potential of air power in order to guarantee future funding, and it came in the RAF air-policing role in the Near East. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years', despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearm-ament in both aircraft and ground forces, the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes one third of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout the Second World War, acknowledging the problems in command, strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces. Chapters cover the lean years from 1940 to 1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts, through the gradual build-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final, comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-1945 mark the high point of RAF history, but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft, the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from 'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force, the slow decline in British research and development, the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. The history of the RAF is fully detailed up to the present as one receding threat causes significant change in the number and type of aircraft needed to face the perceived new problems posed by developing nations." Tiny scuff on bottom of rear board. Dust jacket has minor wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny edge tear, very small dint on rear hinge, two tiny dints on rear panel, minor rubbing.

4 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1976, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297771256 B&w plates. "(A) study of the military strength of Britain and her Empire during the Boer War, First World War and Second World War. Dr Barclay evaluates the contributions of Aus tralia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, and the changing roles played by the colonies during times of crisis. He explains British attitudes to colonial troops - Australian indiscipline and New Zealand thoroughness - and the lack of diplomacy on the part of British military leaders when dealing with their colonial counterparts. After the South Africa War the British government should have seen clearly the advantages of an Empire Military Force, but reports on empire defence from eminen t naval officers such as Fanshawe and Jellicoe were repeatedly ignored. The colonies themselves all reacted differently to the threat of war. Australia was often at odds with New Zealand - the former worried about defending her own vulnerable coa st line, the latter primarily concerned to maintain friendly relationships with Britain; Canada was slow to become involved - but Canadian troops were a stirring sight, well-disciplined fighting men who obeyed their superiors without question; South Af rica made little contribution to the war effort, although her Prime Minister, Jan Smuts, gained great favour with the British Government by always agreeing, in principle, to every new plan put forward by the British. Dr Barclay has written an o utst anding account of the achievements of the British Empire during the late nineteenth and twentieth century, using a vast number of published and unpublished sources." 255 pp, 8vo (8" H). "A novel of tension and suspense. In the first chapter John Ferrers is found guilty of murder, but who has been murdered is not disclosed until the end of the story. The book is the slow unravelling of all the threads which make up the fabric of the crime. Why does a man commit murder or any other crime? What are the causes leading up to that culminating moment when control gives way, when the breaking point is reached?" 632 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the tumultuous years of the (20th) century's first half like bookends on the shelf of history. They have a good deal in common, these two minor conflicts, whose chronicles pale when compared to the bloodbaths of the two world wars. Canada's wartime days are long past, and for many, the scars of war have healed. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadian blood. Now a days, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of the international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process. In this monumental work, Pierre Berton brings Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals at the front, and the politicians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, 'Marching as to War' describes how the experience of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationship with the United States." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling and very minor rubbing.

8 Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1973, first edition.
115 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521386 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. Music for Regimental Slow March, Trot Past, Gallop Past. "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as e d i t o r o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to exc e l. Th ey a re in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence . He has pa id wor t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history." Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1979, first edition.
255 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340234334 " 'Schwerttrager!' It is the summer of 1917, Britain is losing the war against the U-boats and Commander David Cochrane Smith listens to the delirious mumbling of a dying U-baot c ommander: 'Swordbearer'. Smith believes it is the code name for an operation, a threat to Britain, but nobody will listen to him. The threat haunts him. He meets a wild, beautiful, tragic girl and she solves a tiny part of the mystery, en o u g h t o set a clock ticking, counting down. Smith has come home with a bloody victory to his credit but he is still under suspicion of being reckless, a wild man, at best just lucky. He believes the answer to the U-boat lies in convoys but h e is g iv e n a f lotilla 'to take offensive action against U-boats and bases'. The flotilla turns out to be one ancient destroyer, a turtle-back 'thirty-knotter' known as 'Bloody Mary'. It is backed up by a 'ship of force', but that is no more t ha n a mo nit or , ne ar -new and with fifteen-inch guns. Her engines are defective, she is slow and spends more time in the dockyard than at sea. The flotilla is a sick joke; the two ships are the lepers of the Dover Patrol. With them Smith has to take on shor e b at ter ies and bigger, faster enemy destroyers. He has to fight the hostility of his commanding officer and is plunged into the world of espionage behind the enemy lines. Through it all the mystery behind 'Schwerttrager' lure s h im on unt il he sta kes his car eer and his life in a desperate attempt to solve it." Faint cigarette odor. 278 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Hans-Ulrich Rudel was called 'the Eagle of the Eastern Front'. This pastor's son from Silesia, born in 1916, Colonel and last Commodore of the successful Stuka squadron 'Immelmann', was the only soldier in World War II to receive the highest German decoration for bravery. The Golden Oak Leaves with Swords and Jewels to the Knight's Cross recognized his unique number of superlative achievements. With 2530 combat missions and his total of successes, unbeaten in all times and nations, he stands far in the front of the world's renowned aerial aces. In low-level attacks, often in the heaviest defensive fire, in his slow 'Cannon-bird' he destroyed 519 Soviet tanks - 17 of them on a single day! On the list of scores achieved by this Stuka combat pilot, who became a living legend to the soldiers of the Eastern Front, there stood at war's end, among others, 1 battleship, 1 cruiser, 1 destroyer, 70 landing craft and nine attested aircraft, plus hundreds of motor vehicles, numerous artillery, anti-tank and anti-aircraft postions, as well as armored convoys and bridges. Twelve comrades - six Stuka crews - were saved by him from capture or death. When he tried to rescue another crash-landed crew from Russian territory in 1944, he was taken prisoner, fled with a bullet in his shoulder, covered some 50 kilometers through the Soviet hinterlands, and reached the German lines again. Shortly after this audacious, exhausting flight, the wounded man was flying in combat again. Shot more than thirty times by ground fire - but never once by a fighter plane - wounded five times, the fervent sportsman took a direct anti-aircraft hit on the Odor front and lost his right leg. Just six weeks later the 'Bravest of the Brave', as the soldiers also called him, was flying again despite being forbidden to ---" This is a heavy book and may require extra postage, depending on destination. ISBN 0861242750 "German military aviation got off to a somewhat slow start in the years before World War I but innovative aircraft designs and brilliant pilots soon established a deadly reputation in the skies over the Western Front. The Germans were pioneers too in long-distance bombing by the naval air service's Zeppelins and the later Gotha aircraft. Despite t h e restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I innovation continued, to be accelerated when Hitler came to power and the new Luftwaffe had its baptism of fire in Spain. The Luftwaffe went on to play a vital part in th e B litzkrieg campaigns of the early war years and came close to defeating Britain in 1940. The later war years were dominated in turn by the efforts to hold back the American bombers by day and the British by night. In the process the best Ger man p il ots became the most effective in the world, the leading German ace, Hartmann, scoring some 352 victories, while in the technical field Germany pioneered the use of jet aircraft. The present day East German air force is by far the best equ ippe d i n t he Warsaw Pact outside the Soviet Union, fielding such types as the MiG-23 and MiG-27. The new West German Luftwaffe has undergone some problems with its aircraft but with the introduction of the Tornado it now has the equipment to mat ch it s un doub ted operational efficiency. (This book) features Bryan Philpott's carefully researched text as well as photographs and artworks depicting the great and famous aircraft, the men who fought in them and their role in the great conflict s of ( the 2 0th) century. "In the 18th century, artists and potters were not slow to reflect in models the interest of the time in identifying and selectively breeding individual types of dog, and continental and home-based factories started to produce realistic examples of both sporting and pampered dogs. Following Landseer's painting of 1836 of Queen Victoria's favourite dog, the King Charles Spaniel Dash, the potters of Staffordshire were not slow to seize the opportunity to turn Dash into a national icon. Pairs of spaniels were portrayed in clay in enormous quantities, followed soon after by many other breeds. The modellers are usually anonymous, but the simple hand-painted decoration, often done by children, gives each piece an individuality and vitality, and as (this) charming book shows, these dogs have an enduring quality that makes them as endearing today as they were when first made."
