2 Blower, James. Foreword by Grant MacEwan. GOLD RUSH: A PICTORIAL LOOK AT THE PART EDMONTON PLAYED IN THE GOLD ERA OF THE 1890s.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1971 007092919X / 9780070929197 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "By 1898 all roads led to the Klondike. One such road was to pass through the tiny Edmonton community, and Edmonton was never to be the same again. As the gateway and principal outfitting centre to one of the most popular - albeit treacherous - overland trails to the Yukon gold fields, Edmonton, then only 1500 strong, found itself playing host to over 2000 rough and hearty Klondikers. Within two years the town population doubled, local merchants prospered, business boomed. They were colourful times, not to be missed, and James Blower recounts them fondly. He salutes those boisterous, hopeful men equipped with pack horses, ox teams or dog sleds, embarking on a wild journey of more than 1600 miles through forests, swamps, perilous rivers and lakes. Parties of men never heard from again - did they strike it rich in the gold fields or were they victims of drowning, scurvey, starvation? Fortunately, Edmonton boasted two excellent photographers during the Klondike days - W.C. Mathers and Ernest Brown - who recorded on film this extraordinary period in history. Their photographs, most of which have never been published before, represent the greater part of this book." Faint thin red pen mark on top of text block. Dust jacket has minor efge wrinking, two very small edge tears archivally taped, an areas of a four tiny scuffs on front panel, very light soiling on rear panel.

158 pp, 10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D. Colour and b&w reproductions. "Determined to document the lives and customs of the Native people of the Northwest before contact with white settlers changed them forever, the Canadian artist Paul Kane set out in 1845 to cross the continent 'with no companions but my portfolio and a box of paints, my gun and a stock of ammunition'. Travelling by canoe and snowshoe, on foot and on horseback via the Hudson's Bay Company fur trade brigade routes, he made his way from the Great Lakes to the Pacific coast and back again. When he returned to Toronto in the fall of 1848, he brought back some five hundred field sketches and a remarkable collection of artifacts, which he used as raw material for one hundred oil paintings depicting scenes of Native life. (The authors) recreate Kane's heroic journey and bring to life the people and places he encountered. Their narrative supplies the historical context to illuminate his travels, while frequently drawing on Kane's own words from his diary and published journal." 7 Owen, Russell. THE ANTARCTIC OCEAN.
London Whittlesey House / McGraw-Hill 1941 Second Printing Hard Cover Good Fair Stephen J. Voorhies, maps.
254 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers. B&w photographs, maps. "The search for a land greater than the United States and Mexico began centuries ago, but it was not until a little more than a hundred years ago that an American sealer, Nat Palmer, first glimpsed its mainland. After the fanatic fumblings of explorers like Quiros, the discoverer-priest, hard-headed men pushed farther and farther south to learn what lay in the land of mist and snow. Captain Cook sailed around the land without seeing it; Lieut. Charles Wilkes, an American, sailed along its coast for 1,500 miles. Capt. James Clark Ross, the famous Englishman, broke into the silent sea which bears his name and for the first time brought back some knowledge of this great continent, with its high barriers of ice, its lofty mountain ranges and a live volcano, its tremendous beauty. Since then men have been to the South Pole on foot and in airplanes, have lived on ships fast in the ice and on the ice itself. Here are found the names of Scott and Shackleton, of Charcot and Amundsen, of Byrd and Ellsworth. (This) is the story of the almost incredible hardships men overcame because they were driven to rip the veil from one of the most majestic and fabulous regions of the earth." Breakwater, St. John's, NF, 1997, third printing.
367 pp, 9" H, soft cover with self flaps. B&w photographs, illustrations. ISBN 1550810928 "John Olds grew up in Connecticut, sailed on Long Island Sound, played polo for Yale and went to medical school at Johns Hopkins. As a third year medical s tudent he went on a summer's adventure to an unheard of hospital in the equally obscure town of Twillingate in Newfoundland, at that time Great Britain's oldest colony. The summer's experience was offered to Hopkins students, as an elective, to s h o w them medicine as practiced outside the metropolitan centers. It also gave them more hands-on experience than medical school could offer to a junior student. Most came for the summer and then relegated to memory their novel experience with th e ho spitable, gentle people, the chance to do deliveries and appendectomies, and the rustic maritime beauty of the place. (John Olds) liked it so well that upon graduation in 1932 he returned, bringing (his wife), whom he had met there in 1930 as a Hop kins nursing student. They decided to stay a year; the year turned into their lifetimes." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks.
