IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918., Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett.
1 Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918.
Leo Cooper, London, 1994, revised edition.
159 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523184 B&w photographs, diagram, map. "Philip Bartlett's account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as a history, of the first use of the bomber in war, strangely, by the Navy's aircraft. Flying by day and night alone, without navigational aids, the author moves from attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the s upport of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud of Passchendaele. The climax in March, 1918, is reached when the author's squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British Vth Ar m y a n d n e a rly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous desperate missions against the advancing troops from aerodromes which were over-run time after time. At a time when the life of a pilot was re ck on e d in w e ek s, t he author flew 101 missions, enduring the rigours of flying without heat or oxygen, with hesitant engines, no parachutes and the attention of German fighters. Yet there is continual evidence of the pure joy of flying and won der a t the sh ee r b eau ty of the sky." Light browning to top edge of textblock, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good

208 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0947554637 B&w photos, frontispiece portrait. "(Tony Bartley) joined the RAF at the outbreak of war and flew Spitfires with 92 Squadron from RAF Hornchurch, first in the Battle of Fran ce, then covering the Dunkirk evacuation. Later in 1940 the Squadron moved to RAF Biggin Hill which bore the brunt of attacks from German fighters and bombers. At the height of the Battle of Britain he flew daily over London alongside several 9 2 S quadron pilots who went on to fame such as Robert Stanford Tuck, Brian Kingcome and Don Kingaby...Bartley went on to test-fly Spitfires, then led 65 Squadron at Debden and 111 Squardron in North Africa. He flew with 70th Fighter Wing of the Am er i ca n 9th Air Force covering the Normandy landings at Omaha beach. (His) account relives the atmosphere of close knit fighter Squadrons, and also the respite offered by the London social life. Here he met the actress Deborah Kerr, who he marri ed im med iately after the war." 190 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). B&w photographs, drawings. "Jean Batten is one of the great names in aviation history. She was born in New Zealand in 1909, a few weeks after Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel, and qualified for a flying licence at the London Aero Club in 1930. (This book) tells the story of (her) early life and of all her famous flights. The vivid descriptions of these flights, made nearly 50 years ago, highlight the hardships and dangers faced by the early aviators. Quite alone she flew immense distances in record times and in the most basic of aeroplanes. Not only did her flights create time records, but they also blazed the trail for the modern airline routes. The book is based on her earlier work 'My Life' 1938, but thoroughly revised and lengthened by the author without losing its period feel. Now, to a new generation of readers, used to sophisticated jet travel, her achievements will seem incredible. (A) gripping story of skill and courage written by one of the last great pioneer aviatiors." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny corner bumps small faint erased pencil marks at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, minor edge browning, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

367 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). "(A) story of five months of hair-raising adventure on the Italian front in which young Otto Prohaska, the hero of 'A Sailor of Austria' and 'The Emperor's Coloured Coat', entrusts his life to the nascent, unreliable, and terrifying Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Flying Service. It is the summer of 1916, and Otto, joined by his self-willed aerial chauffeur Sergeant-Pilot Toth, entrusts his life to a succession of flimsy biplanes in the sky above war-torn Alpine battlefields. On the ground, the rickety Habsburg empire has begun its final slide to disaster. And in the air is the unmistakable sense that history, poignant and ironic and always surprising is erupting all around them. Written with craft, style, and an astonishing breadth of emotion, (this) is the continuation of a remarkable series." 316 pp, 8 3/8" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he powerful and often thrilling story of a man who daily enters that lonely region beyond the speed of sound. A narrative of needle-nosed ships flying at blistering speeds, it is also the moving testament of a man risking his life to push back the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Like St.-Exupery, Bridgeman is capable of describing the vastness and beauty of the skies. But as America's foremost experimental test pilot, he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical information which he is called upon to use at any given moment. After the war, Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action, he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot. Soon he was asked to take over the final stages of the Skyrocket testing program. The Skyrocket, a javelin-shaped experimental ship, was a challenge to Bridgeman. The story of his day-by-day life with the plane is the substance of (this book)." Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them."
