1 Bowyer, Chaz. FOR VALOUR: THE AIR VCs.
London Grub Street 1992 0948817577 / 9780948817571 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. It also provides a lasting record of their lives and astonishing courage - a permanent tribute to every airman ever awarded a Victoria Cross." Very minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing.

Saw action in the First World War, on through the balmy years between the Wars, mainly in India, and then to fight in North Africa during the Second World War. Eventually, invalided out of the Army due to wounds sustained in Eritrea. These are the reminiscences of a Cavalry Officer of probably the most famous Indian Cavalry Regiment. 8 Horn, Michiel. Edited by David Kaufman. A LIBERATION ALBUM: CANADIANS IN THE NETHERLANDS 1944-45. (BASED ON THE FILM "LIBERATION!" PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY JOHN MULLER.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1980.
176 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070924295 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "The liberation of the Netherlands in 1944-45 ended five long years of hardship, oppression, and the indignity of armed occupation. The German occupation culminated in the 'Hunger Winter' of 1944-45 when, deprived of food and fuel, thousands in the heavily populated western Netherlands starved to death. Most of the Jewish community had died in Nazi concent r a t i o n c amps and thousands of men had been deported to Germany as forced labour. No wonder the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian, British, American and Polish troops released a wave of unforgettable joy....Canadian soldiers recall th e ad va nc e ac r os s Belgium and the Netherlands as one of the most arduous and bitterely contested campaigns of the war. Often their tanks and heavy vehicles bogged down in the soggy terrain and the infantry had to advance on foot across the flo od ed pol der s and a lon g muddy dikes against well-defended German positions. To the soldiers, too, the liberation was a release from the terrors of war, and they joined gladly in the celebrations with the Dutch people. To most Canadians in 193 9 t he Neth erla nd s wa s a tin y far-away country about which they knew little. The momentous events of 1944-45 established a solid bond of affection between the two counties, strengthened after the war by the thousands of war brides and emigran ts w ho heade d for Ca nada. Th is al bum of words and pictures is published in a spirit of rememberance and celebration. Not only does it recapture the emotions of the Dutch at regaining their freedom, but it also commemorates a singular and no ble C ana dian a chieve ment ." Ve ry li ght wr inkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear, slight cigarette odor. Dust jacket has wrinkling along top edge, light browning on spine and flap-folds, one very small closed tear. 9 Kimber, Stephen. LOYALISTS AND LAYABOUTS. THE RAPID RISE AND FASTER FALL OF SHELBURNE, NOVA SCOTIA: 1783-1792.
Doubleday Canada 2008 038566172X / 9780385661720 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
335 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The few hundred Loyalists who gathered at Roubalet's Tavern in New York one night in 1782 shared a nightmare of the past and a dream for the future. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, they found themselves abandoned by the king to whom they had promised their loyalty, and unwelcome in the land that had so recently been theirs. On the rocky shores of Roseway Bay on the south coast of Nova Scotia, beside one of the best harbours in the world, they would found a new and improved New York City. It would be cosmopolitan, but more refined, more royal, more loyal and certainly more exclusive than the place they were leaving forever. At first, all seemed to go according to plan. Shelburne, as it was called, quickly became the fourth-largest city in North America. At the time, Nova Scotia Governor John Parr grandly decribed it as 'the most considerable, most flourishing and most expeditious (city) ever -- built in so short a time --'. Within the decade, however, the Loyalists' dream city was well on its way to becoming a ghost town. What went wrong? This extraordinary and yet little-told episode from our nation's past is brought to exciting life. Combining painstaking research and a novelstic flair for narrative, (Kimber) charts Shelburne's 'rapid rise and faster fall' through the intertwined experiences of an eclectic collection of its early settlers, from aristocrats to freed slaves, colonial officers to local entrepreneurs." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny edge bumps to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

115 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illus. "When Jenny draws an untrue map, the world changes to conform. And Nina, who can give any power she wants to her brother, to his friends, and to herself, refuses to save a neighborhood boy from death. TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER., Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter.
16 Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter. TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER.
Independent, Bromley, 1991, first edition.
432 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1872836011 B&w maps, plans, photographs, reproductions. "Having fought throughout the Battle of Britain, Ulrich Steinhilper was shot down as he flew his Messerschmitt Bf 109-E on a bo mber escort duty. As the wing turned over London it was attacked by 74 Squadron, 'The Tigers', and Sergeant Bill Skinner in a Spitfire was to claim the 'kill'. So it was that in late October 1940 Ulrich was to begin a phase of his life which w o u l d stretch him, at times, to the limit of physical endurance and at another to the edge of insanity. He was to become a prisoner of war, but he was not a man to embrace something as alien as imprisonment lightly and so he was to dedicate h i ms el f to t he idea of escape. This is the remarkable story of the man who was to become one of the select few, popularly known as 'Die Ausbrecherkonige von Kanada' (the breakout kings from Canada). It is a singularly remarkable history of inn ov ati on, c our age and, at times sheer audacity. The detailed record of the life of one very unusual German prisoner of war. It is entirely written from documents which were laboriously hand-written in 1943 and which, through a remarkable seri es of e vent s, were ret urned to Ulrich Steinhilper in 1953. It is not, therefore, the reminiscences of events which occurred fifty years ago, coloured and tainted by the passage of time, but the accurate and historically correct diary of an exce pti onal young ma n." Creas ing and repiar to top corner of rear paste-down, small piece torn from top corner of free rear endpaper, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has heavy wrinkling at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom o f re ar fl ap-fol d an d to p edge of front panel, light rubbing on rear panel with a few very light indentation lines.
