10 Brown, Jane. LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS.
London Viking 1996 0670858714 / 9780670858712 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). "The great architect and his architecture are well known, but what about his patrons, his clients? Who were they? Why did they build? What did they pay for their buildings? From his earliest patrons, a stream of repressed gentlewomen of intelligence and means, through a galaxy of Edwardian heroes and villains, this book tells their stories. Some of them are famous, others unknown, except as Lutyen's clients: here are Herbert Jekyll, Jennie Churchill, J.M. Barrie, Hugh Lane, Victoria Sackville, lords, ladies, Souls, bankers, press barons, politicians, the beau monde of Edwardian England, as well as a schoolteacher who inherited a fortune and a prospering Bradford wool merchant. The complex networking of families and friends threads through the events and settings of Edwardian society, like a richly patterned embroidery. Everything of significance that Lutyens did had its roots in the Edwardian decade - and his clients turn out to be both the triumph and the tragedy of his career. (L)avishly illustrated with the human face of great architecture - sketches, drawings and photographs from family archives all over England." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, slight browning to spine, edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

Dover, New York, 1962.
216 pp + publisher's catalog, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with Busch's b&w cartoons. Bilingual text (English/German). "Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908), endowed with an equipotent facility with sketch-pad and rhyming dictionary, c reated during his career some of the most arresting sketches and drollest verses the world has ever seen. Few men since his time have shown the same ability to match simple yet penetrating pictures with rollicking, quotable verse. In his n a t i v e G e rmany he is still by all odds the best-loved creator of illustrated light verse....(Many of his pithy aphorisms have long since become folk sayings among the Germans.) The variety of tone and subject matter is wide: Busch is in tur n ma le vo le nt , j ov ial, sardonic, diabolical and even bloodthirsty as he castigates hypocrisy, stodginess, stupidity, egotism, drunkenness, and other human foibles....The English translations are both ingenious and faithful; in most cases they a re the fi rst En gl ish tr anslations ever made. Those who do not read German may be certain that the original has been translated into English with its spiciness and sense intact. Both the German and the English appear side by side, so that re ade rs o f Ge rman may sa vor Busc h's own delightful rhymes, while those who are learning German will find it an enjoyable way to gain familiarity with the langauge...." Exterior - browning to edges of textblock, browning to covers, very small ghost sticker mark on front cover, very small surface paper loss at bottom of spine and bottom corner of front cover . 14 Cane, Bruce. (Deward Barnes) IT MADE YOU THINK OF HOME. THE HAUNTING JOURNAL OF DEWARD BARNES, CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE: 1916-1919.
Dundurn, Toronto, 2004, first edition.
318 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550025120 "This is (the story of Deward Barnes, a Canadian soldier of WWI), in his words, written as the events of the Great War were unfolding. Illustrated with Deward's sketches and contemporary photos, (it) takes us into the mind of this ordinary Canadian soldier, trapped in a world in which he had to pay a terrible price in order to survive. In 1917, Deward was assigned to the firing squad that was to take the life of Pr i v a te Harold Lodge, who had been convicted of desertion by a court martial. Lodge was one of 23 Canadians executed during the war by their own brothers at arms. It was an experience that changed Deward forever. Bruce Cane has provided valuable i ns ig hts into Deward's words by juxtaposing (them) with the official accounts of these events, along with other first-hand accounts from the period, in order to capture the nuance of each of his entries. Deward Barnes' diary takes us into the t ren che s a nd firing lines of the Western Front like no other first-hand Canadian account before. Deward's is the voice of the Canadian soldier, Everyman in khaki, the men who today lie in their graves in the fields of Flanders and Picardy." In this autobiographical book he explains how everything in his varied and successful career as a marine painter seemed to be preparing him for such an undertaking. His chance came in 1982 when he was invited to visit the Falkland Islands immediately after the Argentine surrender and, with the full co-operation of the military, he began a remarkable series of paintings to record the principal events of the war. 17 Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation. THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION.
Toronto Prospero 2001 1552671801 / 9781552671801 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
298 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H). "Numerically the largest group of Native North Americans, the Ojibway were the first to have a history written by one of their own people. Published in 1850, its author, George Copway, or Kah-ge-g a-gah-bowh, had already achieved a certain amount of fame delivering passionate lectures in North America and Europe. Attired in traditional Ojibway dress, Copway held up the virtues of tribal life while promoting mid-nineteenth-century ideas on education. Arguing for a separate Native North American state, Copway garnered considerable support from both Natives and non-Natives. (This), Copway's finest book, is in many ways a summation of his lectures. Written primarily for a non- Native audience, Copway viewed the book as an attempt to 'awaken a deeper feeling' toward the people of the First Nations. Much more than a history, the work in an exploration of Ojibway culture through which Copway had sought to induce the British and American governments to greater efforts in improving their relationships with Native North Americans." Minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

18 Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation. THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION.
Toronto Coles 1972 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good
298 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. Facsimile reprint of the Charles Gilpin, London, 1850 edition. "This 'first volume of Indian history written by an Indian' was published in 1850 by a chief of the Ojibway nation in order to awaken 'a deeper feeling for the race of red men, and induce the pale-face to use greater effort to effect an improvement in their social and political relations'. The author, though a chief, was converted to Christianity, was educated, and became a preacher. He had great love for his people and their culture, and he travelled in England, America, and Canada campaigning for a permanent reservation for them, where they would be taught Christianity, general education, and agriculture. His thorough account of the Ojibways includes the geography of their territory, their origins, their migratory habits, their wars, amusements, legends, language, and picture-writing, as well as their government and religion. The next chapters document the discovery of the New World from the Indian point of view. The author's rendering of the story and its drastic effects upon his people makes fascinating reading. The book exposes one more facet in the extremely complex history of the relationships of the two cultures, providing unprecedented insights into modern Canadian problems from a point of view that is rarely heard." Dust jacket has very light edge rubbing, one tiny dent and one line dent on front hinge.
