3 Ashe, David and Burnell, Joyce. OAKVILLE STREET NAMES & LANDMARKS.
London, Ontario Burnell Creighton 2007 0978428803 / 9780978428808 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
168 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs and reproductions. "This collection is based on the life's work of David Ashe, who while employed as a draftsperson with the Town of Oakville compiled a listing of legal survey plans and registry information on the streets of Oakville. Being a researcher at heart, he went further and spent countless hours of his spare time gathering the history behind Oakville's streets. Joyce Burnell has picked a selection of Ashe's street histories and has added several Oakville landmarks - some of which are not longer here. Add to this, interesting archival images - some never before seen - combined with newer colour photographs and you have an intriguing reflection of Oakville's unique history. With close to 100 street name histories and over 40 landmarks featured, these interesting vignettes make for an easy, enjoyable read. This book links Oakville's street names to local, regional, national and international people, places and things. With such a diverse selection and varied inspirations, you may be surprised!" Very small bump at top/bottom of spine, a few very small bumps at bottom edge of front board, tiny tear at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has some light wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and bottom of front flap, tiny tear at bottom of rear hinge - archivally taped.

Motilal Banarsidass, Delhi, 2000.
300 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 8120813553 "(C)ontains a metrical English rendering of an important Buddhist work in Pali named the 'Sutta-Nipata' with the original text in Romanized version on the opposite page. The Pali Canon, as it has come down to us, is divided into three Pitakas or 'baskets', viz. Vinaya-Pitaka, Sutta-Pitaka and Abhidhamma-Pitaka. The Sutta-Nipata, translated here, contains an ancient, probably the most ancient, part of the Sutta- P i t a k a . It belongs to that portion of the Sutta-Pitaka which is named Khuddaka Nikaya or 'Collection of Short Treatises' as distinct from the four long Nikayas called Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Anguttara. Of the five Vaggas (or 'books') of t he p re se nt Sutta-Nipata the fifth stands out from its fellows by reason of its purposeful unity. While th Uraga, Maha, Cula and Atthaka Vaggas consist each of a collection of independent and unconnected poems (sometimes interspersed with pr ose ) c all ed 'Su tta s', the Parayana aims at a dramatic synthesis. Its prologue and epilogue serve as a setting for the sixteen Questions which elicit Gotama's gradual exposition of the saving 'Way Across'." Faint discoloration on cloth boar ds. Dus t ja cket ha s li ght edge wear/wrinkling, one small tear with creases taped, light rubbing, soft crease on spine, very small label from bookstore on front flap. Very Good/Very Good-

THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING., Hoff, Benjamin.
16 Hoff, Benjamin. THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING.
Weatherhill, New York, (1981), Ist edition.
86 pp, oblong 16mo (6 1/4" H x 9 1/8" D), hard cover (blue cloth with silver lettering on spine) in dust jacket. 16 color photographs. "These new and extremely creative versions (of the Tao Te Ching) by Benjamin Hoff, accompanied by an introduction to the basics of Taoist philosophy, bring the words of the sage to life once again. The Tao Te Ching, or Tao Virture Classic, concerns the working of Tao, the way or path to life in harmony with natural laws. The Tao Te Ching cautions us to seek wisdom rather than knowledge: 'Along the way to knowledge, many things are accumulated. Along the way to wisdom, many things are discarded'. In just this manner, Benjamin Hoff has succeeded in dispersing the mysteries surrounding this ancient text and in reducing the Taoist philosophy to a straightforward message, ever intriguing but no longer elusive. Such basic principles of Taoism as the uncarved block, the source, and the wu wei are given lucid definition. And in further accordance with the Taoist belief that words are an insufficient vehicle for conveying the meaning of Tao, sixteen color photographs are juxtaposed to selected passages, reflecting their essential truth..." It is based on wide research, begun out of genuine interest and curio s i t y , into a part of the province about which very little has been written.
