London Pan Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good -
First 4 books in the series - 7" H. 1. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - 180 pp, 1979 80th printing, ISBN 0330258648 - "On Thursday lunchtime the Earth gets unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be more than he can cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun, and the Galaxy is a very strange and startling place." 2. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - 187 pp, 1980 26th printing, ISBN 0330262130 - " 'Good Evening ladies and gentlemen, I am your host for tonight, Max Quordlepleen, and I have just come straight from the other end of time where I have been hosting a show at the Big Bang Burger Bar and I will be your host for this historic occasion - the End of History itself'. " 3. Life, the Universe and Everything - 1982 22nd printing, ISBN 0330267388 - "For two books, humankind has been unaware of a not inconsequential snippet of information. The most careful consultation of (those volumes) have left millions unaware of why Earth has always been shunned by the rest of the Galaxy. Now all - and more - can be revealed - ." 4. So Long and Thanks for all the Fish - 1985 3rd printing, ISBN 0330287001 - " '(O)ne Thursday, nearly 2,000 years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own somewhere in Rickmansworth suddenly realised what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no-one would have to get nailed to anything. Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it the Earth was unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace by-pass, and so the idea was lost forever. This is not her story - . (Well at) least partly - . Arthur Dent finds her in the last place in the universe he would expect to find anything but which 3,976,000,000 people will find oddly familiar - ." Interiors -volumes 2, 3 and 4 have light browning to pages, page 8 in volume 4 has some previous owner's black ink editing to text, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. 2 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
3 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." 6 Charters, Dean. Introduction by Angela M. O'Connell. MOUNTIE, 1873-1973: A GOLDEN TREASURY OF THOSE EARLY YEARS.
Don Mills Collier-Macmillan 1973 029734207 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
253 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "1973 marks the centennial anniver- sary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (This book is) a pictorial tour of adventure through those glorious early days. One hundred years is not long when we are talking about history, but a glance at these photographs shows the phenomenal growth of Canada during that period. And the man who laid the groundwork for this phenomenal growth was the Mountie. Without his work of pacification, the task of settling and civilizing the Canadian west could not have been carried out. The photographers who took these pictures must have been imbued with the same spirit of adventure that motivated the Mountie. The proof is here. Wherever the men of the N.W.M.P. went, the photographers followed. The results of their work are here, a fitting tribute to the men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police." Tiny soft bump at top corner of pages 163 to end of book, previous owner's small label on front pastedown, very faint tiny foxing marks on bottom of text block, minor wrinking at bottom of spine. Boston Little Brown 1977 0316145955 / 9780316145954 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
271 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "(T)ells the story of William Friedman, the master cryptographer who solved the 'unbreakable' Japanese cipher system, 'Purple', used by the Imperial navy and the Japanese embassy in Berlin. (This) is the first full-scale, authorized biography of the attractive but driven leader of the only wartime enterprise as top secret as the manufacture of the first atomic bomb. (It) provides a sober account of how America's early, scattered intelligence agencies burgeoned steadily without foresight into a modern bureaucracy characterized by pathological secrecy and ethical ambiguity - and how such expansion took a severe toll on Friendman's mental and physical health. Clark discloses how much the Purple decipherments contributed to the Allied offensive in Europe and, most of all, influenced the outcome of the war in the Pacific: how the Battle of Midway and the ambush of Yamamoto's plane over Bougainville were decided by decoded Purple messages; and how, tragically, circumstances prevented the deciphered warnings of an impending attack from being understood in time at Pearl Harbor. A thoughtful biography of a dapper figure who transformed cryptography from a remote craft 'run by guess and by God' to a complex science, (it) triumphs in its recreation of those agonizing hours when the fate of our fleet in the Pacific, and its officers and men, was determined by a handful of men with only small strips of paper sitting in a room thousands of miles away." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, crease down front flap at fore-edge, one small edge tear with crease, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Young Elin, whose father works in the mines, is denied what she wants most in the world - a pair of figure skates and skating lessons. Her father cannot afford them. And so to bring this greatest dream to life Elin works at the grocery store for kind old Mr. Kurtcheff. 12 Fraser, George MacDonald. Dust jacket art by Barbosa. FLASHMAN AND THE REDSKINS. FROM THE FLASHMAN PAPERS, 1849-50 AND 1875-76.
Collins, London, 1982, first edition.
479 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "When the tide of battle surged over the slopes of Little Bighorn, and Sitting Bull's braves gathered for the final charge that would sweep away the gallant remnant of Custer's 7th Cavalry, a clarion voice was heard above the crash of shots and whistle of arrows, the war-whoops and the pounding hooves: - Readers of his previous adventures will not fail to identify the speaker, or to recognise the tall, distinguished figure in evening dress, tails and whiskers, fleeing the stricken field: Sir Harry Flashman, V.C., veteran of countless retreats from battle and bedchamber, the most decorated coward of the Victorian age, was meeting his fate with the same matchless poltroone ry and deafness to duty and decency which had sustained him through a lifetime of dishonourable service, and endeared him to a generation of readers. But how the arch-cad of Dr Arnold's Rugby found himself in the climactic struggle of the Ame r i c a n West is only one chapter in an odyssey as hair-raising and scandalous as any in his six earlier volumes of memoirs. He traces it with his usual shameless candour and caustic humour, from the wagon-trains of the Forty-Niners, when he foug ht h is t er r ified way across the Plains in command of a bordello on wheels, to the holocaust of Bent's Fort and the horrors of scalp-hunting raids, Apache warpaths, dinner parties with Custer, captivity among the Sioux, confrontations with Pres ide nt Gra nt and W ild Bill Hickock, duels, escapes, conspiracies, and shoot-outs - to say nothing of passionate encounters with Indian belles, dusky beauties, enthusiastic widows, and mysterious adventuresses. This is Flashy's West as only he ca n de scr ibe it - th e W est, at once legendary and authentic, of Mangas Colorado and Kit Carson, of Custer and Spotted Tail, of Crazy Horse and the Deadwood stage, a pageant of savage warriors and Mountain Men, glory-hunting soldiers and gunfighter s, ga mble rs, ecc entri cs, scoundrels, and those extraordinary folk, white and Indian, who broke the trails or resisted the invasion." Book slightly cocked, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine/hinges, very light speckles of foxing on top of te xt blo ck. Dust jac ket ha s be en price clipped, has minor edge wear/wrinkling, soft wrinkles at top edge of rear flap, light rubbing. Very Good-/Very Good

Where else can you fi nd the fascianting anecdotes, colorful stories and vivid details of battle told by men on the front lines? And see firsthand, the press' outrageous inaccuracy in covering the conflict? "The real-life quest to free WWII planes (6 P-38 Lightnings and 2 B-17 Flying Fortress bombers), entombed within a Greenland glacier. They had become an Arctic legend. Tales of an entire squadron of war-birds from 1942 still sitting on the ice in Greenland were passed from one pilot to another. On a jaunt to the far north in 1980, two pilots from Atlanta, Georgia, heard the story and decided to look for the lost planes. What began as casual curiosity soon became a twelve-year adventure and a multimillion-dollar obsession. 294 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map on front endpapers, reproductions of letters on rear endpapers. "Few people know that Charles Dickens had a son who served in the North-West Mounted Police in the days when the Canadian West was wild. Those historians who mention his twelve years in the force (1874-1886) dismiss him as a round peg in a square hole, a fat, stammering, slightly deaf, alcoholic Englishman with a tendency to fall off his horse in the course of tense confrontations with Indian warriors. These recently discovered letters home to England set the record straight, and reveal the true Dickens. Not only do these letters tell us much about the Dickens family, even to the point of parodying 'Pa's' purple prose, they also tell us a great deal about early Canada as Dickens saw it in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Winnipeg, and in forts all across the prairies. Dickens met everyone worth meeting in the West - including Crowfoot, Gabriel Dumont, Sam Steele, Jerry Potts, and Louis Riel - and even encountered famous visitors such as Sitting Bull, the Governor General, and Col. Harry Flashman (whom he calls 'a humbug'). And while he may have blotted his copy-book surrendering Fort Pitt to Riel's rebels, we learn here that he deserves credit for inspiring the Mounties' Musical Ride and the phrase 'a Mountie always gets his man'. Editor Nichol's wonderful skills have brought this man so alive that when we part from Frank Dickens at the end of the book, we do so with the sense of having lost a friend." Small area of light browning on top of text block. Dust jacket has tiny dent on rear panel, very minor edge wrinkling.
