1 Durrell, Lawrence. COLLECTED POEMS.
London Faber and Faber 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
288 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H). "It is primarily as a lyrical poet and a poet of places that (Durrell) is acknowledged to excel, but now that he has assembled in (this book) 'all that the author wishes to preseve' it will be found that the range of feeling and ideas, of wit and experience, and also of style, is remarkable. The poems have been arranged by the author himself, not in chronological order but according to their various kinds. Mr. Durrell is a romantic poet in an age of didactic and sectarian poetry; and by temperament and choice Mediterranean rather than Nordic. All those who have acquired an ear for his verse by reading the volumes in which it has been published, and all those seriously interested in the poetry of the 'thirties, the 'forties and the 'fifties, will wish to have his 'Collected Poems'; other readers will come to it from his novels or his island books." Previous owner's small name stamp at top of front/rear pastedowns - underneath the dust jacket flaps, light toning to top edge of textblock, very light edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Small puncture to dust jacket at the last 'e' in Lawrence (see scan), minor wear at top/bottom of flap-folds a few small browning marks at top edge. THE PRIVATE LIFE OF GRETA GARBO., Palmborg, Rilla Page. (Greta Garbo.)
3 Palmborg, Rilla Page. (Greta Garbo.) THE PRIVATE LIFE OF GRETA GARBO.
Doubleday, Doran, Garden City, N.Y., 1931, 1st edition.
282 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 4 pages of b&w photos. "Almost single-haded Greta Garbo has altered the technique and style of the motion-picture. She is perhaps the greatest screen actress of our generation. In a few years she has risen from a frightened little Swedish girl seeking a tiny part on the Stockholm stage, to a woman whose name is known all over the world, but her personality has remained a closed book, an enigma that no one has been able to penetrate. Portraying sirens, sophisticates, silken women hidden from sunlight and fresh air, she has been none of those things herself. Where did her great ability spring from, what has made her the international figure she is today? In this book you wi ll find the answer." Pages browning lightly, very tiny ink speck on free front endpaper, a few very small areas of faint fading to color on top edge of textblock, browning to fore-edge and bottom of textblock, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight darkening to edges of covers, minor edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling, very small chips and tears - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight darkening to flap-folds and to spine, light rubbing/soiling to rear panel, a few light soiling marks on front panel, now protected in mylar sleeve. WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
5 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corners of boards, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at top inside edge.
