Royal coronation robes are truly spectacular, being made of the finest and richest materials, elaborately embroidered in gold, while the officers of Church and State are arrayed in the full panoply of their ceremonial dress in honour of th e So ve reign. The Peers in robes of crimson velvet with ermine trimming and cape, the Knights of the Orders of Chivalry in richly coloured robes and insignia, the Officers of Arms in their tabards and the great Officers of State are massed in rank s of rar e and unforgettable splendour. There are many other occasions on which ceremonial robes are regularly worn, and seen and admired by millions. The State Opening of Parliament brings together the Peers and Judges, the Officers of State and t he Bish ops to hear the Queen's Gracious Speech from the Throne. The annual Garter Ceremony at Windsor is an opportunity to see the Queen and other members of the Royal Family in their blue silk velvet Garter robes, accompanied by the Knights of th e Garte r and the Heralds of the College of Arms. At the Lord Chancellor's Breakfast in October, marking the beginning of the legal year, the most senior Judges wear their splendid black and gold gowns - made of black damask elaborately trimmed wit h gold l ace and handmade gold ornaments - and the High Court Judges their scarlet robes trimmed with ermine, as they process with black-gowned barristers between the House of Lords and Westminster Abbey. The annual election of the Lord Mayor of Lo nd on give s rise to a whole series of events at which civic robes are worn, and also sees the gathering together of the members of the livery companies, whose officers wear a great variety of ceremonial dress. In the summer, degree ceremonie s take pl ace all over the country, and an extraordinary number of variations on the basic theme of the academic gown and hood can be seen. (This book) contains a full account of Ede and Ravenscroft's central role in these occasions as makers of robes a nd w igs for three centuries. 8 Fleming, Peter. THE SIEGE AT PEKING.
Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1959, first edition.
273 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Photographs, maps, plans, reproductions. "Although they had been reported massacred, the Legations (British, French, American, Japanese, etc.) were still holding out (as of 5 July 1900 when Lord S aisbury reported to Queen Victoria). Their small polyglot garrison, supplemented by armed volunteers, had to contend not merely with the fanatical Boxers but with the Imperial Chinese Army. In the history of warfare there has been no strang e r s i e g e. Cooped up behind their improvised barricades (many of the sandbags were made of silk), tortured by heat and flies, sustained by strictly rationed pony-meat and unlimited champagne, heartened by delusions of impending relief, somehow t he Le ga ti on s withstood the daily and nightly onslaughts...Mr Fleming's detailed study is based partly on important new evidence." Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

14 Laven, Mary. MISSION TO CHINA: MATTEO RICCI AND THE JESUIT ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST.
London Faber and Faber 2011 0571225179 / 9780571225170 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
279 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w maps, colour plates. "In the sixteenth century, the vast and sophisticated empire of China lay almost entirely unknown to Western travellers. As global trade expanded, this land of reputedly boundless wealth, pale-faced women, and indecipherable tongues begn to feed the fantasies of European merchants and adventurers. The Catholic Church, meanwhile, saw in this great people millions of souls who would be damned unless the Christian message could be brought to them. Mary Laven tells the extraordinary story of the first Jesuit mission to China. Confronting enormous challenges, the Italian priest Matteo Ricci and a handful of learned companions embarked on a journey into the heart of the Empire, the fabled Forbidden City. As they became intimate with a culture that was utterly alien and strangely familiar, they clung to a belief that reason, books and science would be their chief tools in the battle to win Chinese converts. Yet the story told (here) is much more than a war of ideas. The Jesuits waged their campaigns through the senses: the smell of incense, the taste of warm rice-wine, the sound of an out-of-tune harpsichord, the gleam of a Venetian prism. The history of religion has never been so sensuous." Very light wrinkling at top of spine, small bump at top corner of boards, light toning to top of text block, light waviness to for-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, three tiny dents on front hinge.

THE WOMAN IN FASHION., Moore, Doris Langley.
18 Moore, Doris Langley. THE WOMAN IN FASHION.
London B. T. Batsford 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair Felix Fonteyn, photographer.
184 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, colour fronispiece shows Vanessa Redgrave in pink tafetta dress. "(The author) possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. (This book) makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge, and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn, as they were at the time when they were first made: that is, they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh, Ruth Draper, Margot Fonteyn, Moira Shearer, Beatrice Lillie, Googie Withers, Mai Zetterling, and many others well known on the stage, the films, and in similar spheres, the costumes (of c.1800 to 1926) 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. (Moore's) text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman, with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight, sympathy, and expertise." Light browning to endpapers - small stain on rear pastedown, soft bump to top corner of pages, small bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered small areas of color fading on front board and on edges of boards, very small liquid stain on front board.
