ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES., Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young.
5 Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young. ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES.
Longmans, Green, London, 1968, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps/battle plans, 2 portraits. "The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13) holds a special place in the annals of several European armies. The protracted struggle produced a number of great cap tains - John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, Prince Eugene of Savoy and the French Marshal Villars - and their respective martial achievements still exert a strong fascination. Two of their contemporaries who throw a considerable amoun t o f l i ght on the day-to-day conduct of Marlborough's most important campaigns, with their roll-call of famous successes - Blenheim, Raimillies, Oudenarde, Malplaquet, the lines of Ne Plus Ultra - are Capt. Robert Parker of the Royal Regiment o f F oo t o f Ir eland (whose 'Memoirs', though often briefly quoted, have not been republished since they first appeared some time after his death); and the Comte de Merode-Westerloo whose 'Memoires' are hardly known outside Belgium. In almost ever y re spe ct t he y p resent striking contrasts, in birth, rank and character, and their differences are reflected in their writing. Parker, an Irishman of obscure origins, reached the relatively humble rank of Captain of Grenadiers. His whole mil it ary lif e w as int imat ely bound up with his regimental family. His feelings for Marlborough at times amount to uncritical hero-worship. From first to last he reveals himself as a highly competent professional soldier of modest and unpretenti ous cha racte r. The Com te de Merode-Westerloo, a great magnate in Flanders with a redoubtable ancestry behind him, eventually became a Field-Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire - not that he had begun the war in the Emperor's service, but in that of h is en emies. B rave to t he poi nt of folly, irascible, touchy, overbearingly arrogant, he was continually in trouble. He bore lasting grudges against the men who, he thought, had conspired to ruin his career - Marlborough and Prince Eugene . As a com mander it i s dou btful whether he possessed sufficient cool judgment to merit his appointment to posts of the highest responsiblity. Expertly edited and annotated, the relevant passages from these two memoirs provide a narrative of t his gr eat war of ext raord inary immedi acy and fascination. It will also be invaluable to students of the period." Small soiling mark on bottom of text block, light wrinkling and tiny tear at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate wear and archiva lly tape d tear a t bott om of spine, light ed ge wear/wrinkling at top of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds, slight browning, minor soiling. "(The author provides atmosphere and reality to this history) by focusing attention upon the people and the everyday happenings at the Fortress of Louisbourg and gives a colorful re-creation of land and sea battles. Downey describes this vital bastion as 'The strongest fortress in America, a walled city without a peer in the New World'. Louisbourg was guardian of the approaches to the S t . L awrence River, gateway to the heart of French Canada, and the key to a continent. In North America, the grasp of France was beginning to loosen. Its territories were shrinking, due to England's relentless drive. But total possession was im po ss i bl e so long as the great fortress Louisbourg stood fast. Then in 1744, war was declared between France and England and General William Pepperrell and American Colonial troops with the English navy laid siege to Louisbourg which fell in 174 5. En gl and 's possession lasted only three years, as Louisbourg was restored to the French by the Treaty of Aix la-Chapelle. The Seven Years War brough still another siege (1758) by the British who defeated the French. "In 1872, Irish-born, seventeen-year-old Henry Ross Halpin arrived in Fort Garry, Manitoba, to take up a position with the Hudson's Bay Company. His career took him from the shores of Hudson Bay, across the plains, and to the headwaters of the Mackenzie River. Throughout his life, he immersed himself in learning the traditions and culture of Canada's Native Peoples and ultimately became an Indian agent. At his death in 1930, he was described as 'one of the best acquainted with Indian tradition and legend in the west'. Halpin was catapulted onto the historical stage in 1885, being captured by rebel Cree and serving as a secretary/negotiator for Big Bear, the non-rebel Cree chief at the siege of Fort Pitt. Born into a family of journalists, he was a great storyteller and astute observer. His memoirs of his life in the fur trade and of his captivity, combined with his correspondence and annual reports to the Department of Indian Affairs, offer a rare glimpse of life during these turbulent times of change in the West." "Although they had been reported massacred, the Legations (British, French, American, Japanese, etc.) were still holding out (as of 5 July 1900 when Lord S aisbury reported to Queen Victoria). Their small polyglot garrison, supplemented by armed volunteers, had to contend not merely with the fanatical Boxers but with the Imperial Chinese Army. In the history of warfare there has been no strang e r s i e g e. Cooped up behind their improvised barricades (many of the sandbags were made of silk), tortured by heat and flies, sustained by strictly rationed pony-meat and unlimited champagne, heartened by delusions of impending relief, somehow t he Le ga ti on s withstood the daily and nightly onslaughts...Mr Fleming's detailed study is based partly on important new evidence."
