UNKNOWN SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF THE MISSING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Hanson, Neil.
6 Hanson, Neil. UNKNOWN SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF THE MISSING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2005, first American edition.
474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0307263703 B&w photographs, map. "The First World War was a conflict of unprecedented ferocity that unleashed such demons as mechanized warfare and mass death on the twentieth century. After the last shot was fired and the troops marched home, approximately three million soldiers remained unaccounted for. Some bodies were found, but they bore no trace of identification; many more men had been blown to smithereens or had s i m p l y vanished into battlefields where as many as a hundred shells had fallen on every square yard. An unassuming English chaplain first proposed a symbolic burial of one of those unknown soldiers in memory of all the missing dead. The idea w as p ic ke d u p by almost every country that had an army in the war, and each laid a body to rest amid an outpouring of national grief - in London's Westminster Abbey, Paris's Arc de Triomphe, Rome's Victor Emmanuelle Monument, and, for the United St ate s, Arl in gt on National Cemetery in Virginia. In (this book, the author) offers an unflinching yet compassionate account of the reality of battle on the front lines. He focuses on three soldiers - an American, an Englishman, and a German - an d na rra tes the ir war experiences through their diaries and letters. (He) describes how each man endured the nearly unbearable conditions in the trenches and in the air and relates what is known about their deaths; all three died on the batt lefie lds o f th e So mme, wi thin gunshot sound of one another. He delves into their familial ties, the ideals they expressed in their letters, and he explains how the death of one, the American pilot George Seibold, was instrumental in the creat ion of the G old S tar M other s, a n organization caring for bereaved mothers, wives, and families that is still active today. Hanson animates and brings to life the combatants who perished without a trace, and shows how the Western world arrived at the now ti me-hon ored w ay of mourn ing and paying tribute to all those who die in war." Tiny piece missing from edge of rear pastedown, two tiny tears at top of spine, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. THE RIDDLES OF WIPERS: AN APPRECIATION OF "THE WIPERS TIMES", A JOURNAL OF THE TRENCHES., Ivelaw-Chapman, John.
7 Ivelaw-Chapman, John. THE RIDDLES OF WIPERS: AN APPRECIATION OF "THE WIPERS TIMES", A JOURNAL OF THE TRENCHES.
London Leo Cooper 1997 0850524946 / 9780850524949 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Near Fine
163 pp, small 4to (10 15/16" H). Profusely illustrated with photographs, reproductions. " 'The Wipers Times' was the 'Private Eye' of the Ypres Salient during World War One. Edited, while under bombardment, by a battalion commander in the Sherwood Foresters, written by soldiers actually in the trenches and distributed by ration-wagon and ammunition-mule, the paper bears vivid witness to the shocking realities of trench warfare. Yet for all the occasional horror of its content 'The Wipers Times' was a gentle, humour-filled and satirical paper which, once its codes are cracked and its riddles solved, tells an interested reader much about the characters and personalities of the men in the British Army of the First World War. Interpretation of regular features such as the bogus music-hall advertisements that feature in every issue, columns like 'Answers to our Many Correspondents' and 'Things We Want to Know' and careful study of some of the remarkable poetry published in the paper explain to readers what it was like to be there. The mud, the gas, the shells; the fear, the courage, the humour and the bitterness; much is revealed about these and many other things in this remarkable book that unravels the eighty-year-old Riddles of Wipers." Small soiling line on top of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

In her 'Album of Curious Houses' she has described and pho tographed some of these extraordinary finds: an underwater smoking room in Surrey; an eighteenth-century 'cottage ornee' in Devon, walls decorated with shells, fossils and painted birds with real feathers; a 1908 Yorkshire house all but covered i n c eramic tiles; a Cornish vicarage with six chimneys, each the replica of a church tower; twentieth-century London flats disguised as castles. Houses in churches, in medieval castles, in trees; triangular houses, circular houses, stately and u np re t en tious, old and new - Lucinda Lambton has visited them all and writes about them with great humour and wit." 13 Mosier, John. THE MYTH OF THE GREAT WAR: A NEW MILITARY HISTORY OF WORLD WAR I
New York HarperCollins 2001 0060196769 / 9780060196769 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w maps. "Based on a decade of research into previously unused French and German sources, (this book) shows what actually happened at the front as the participants perceived it at the time, as opposed to what French and British commanders and governments claimed. John Mosier, who visited all the major battlefields, describes and analyzes campaigns that are routinely neglected or ignored and shows why conventional accounts of such major battles as Verdun are incorrect. He explains how German tactics, weapons, training and leadership were consistently superior, and why the endless, ineffective attacks of the French and British with inferior weapons and battle tactics of the previous century resulted in mindless slaughter and defeat. Mosier also discusses the major military leaders on both sides - including Joffre, Petain, Foch, Gallieni, French, Haig, Wilson, Moltke, Ludendorff, Falkenhayn, Mudra, and Pershing. The French and British military controlled, suppressed, and manipulated all battlefield reports. German losses were magnified; failures became successes, defeats victories. Allied intelligence was grossly inaccurate and inadequate, and the result was a distorted picture of what was really happening. Absorbing and persuasive, 'The Myth of the Great War' is a striking new assessment of the military realities of World War I." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, faint finger print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, minor rubbing.

17 Shemie, Bonnie. NATIVE DWELLINGS SERIES. HOUSES OF SNOW, SKIN AND BONES (FAR NORTH) / HOUSES OF BARK: TIPI, WIGWAM AND LONGHOUSE (WOODLAND INDIANS) / HOUSES OF HIDE AND EARTH (PLAINS INDIANS) / MOUNDS OF EARTH AND SHELL (THE SOUTHWEST) / HOUSES OF ADOBE (THE SOUTHWEST).
Montreal Tundra Hard Cover Near Fine Bonnie Shemie.
Five books from the Native Dwellings series. * A sixth book was issued (Houses of Wood: the Northwest coast) but is not included here.* 24 pages each, in glazed pictorial boards with map endpapers. Illustrated in colour and b&w with drawings and diagrams. 1. Houses of Snow, Skin and Bones - ISBN 0887762409, 1989 - "Northerners used whatever materials were to hand: snow, stone, earth, skin, bones and any driftwood found along the shores. How each type of dwelling was con-structed and lived in is told here through a simple text and illustrations that are informative and artistic." 2. House of Bark - ISBN 0887762468, 1990 - "Although native tribes build many sizes and styles of bark dwellings according to their survival needs, three main types emerge: the tipi, the wigwam and the longhouse. How all of these were constructed is made clear in Bonnie Shemie's detailed drawings and made humanly relevant in the beautiful double-page colored illustrations that are works of art." 3. Houses of Hide and Earth - ISBN 0887762697, 1991 - "The western plains are a windswept land of extreme summer heat and winter cold, without trees or other natural shelter. The Indians built their houses with the only materials they had: the skins of the buffalo they hunted or the soil dug from the earth around them. How they improved and adapted these materials to their needs and environment is the subject of this fascinating book. (Shemie) also discusses the earthlodge, dating from AD 700 and unlike anything we have today. Both tipi and earthlodge were laid out according to religious beliefs and symbols, as were other prairie buildings such as arbors, burial platforms, sweat lodges and the impressive structures used to celebrate the sun dance." 4. Mounds of Earth and Shell - ISBN 0887763189, 1993 - "Of all the buildings made by the Native peoples across North America, the least known and understood are the mounds. Who built these structures? Why did they build them? And where did the builders go? Mounds built of shell, and then of earth, date back over 3000 years. They were used for religious ceremonies, burial sites and hills to hold homes of the powerful. From Florida as far north as Ontario, and from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi Valley these structures are keys to our understanding of the earliest civilizations of North America's Native peoples." 5. House of Adobe - ISBN 0887763308, 1995 - "In the harsh, dry landscape of the American Southwest, the Native peoples built some of the continent's most enduring architecture out of adobe and stone. Bonnie Shemie explores the techniques used to create these dwellings and takes us to the impressive stone structures of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde, Colorado, the many pueblos of the region, and explains the significance of the kiva." Two volumes with a few very tiny dents on top edge of boards.

VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847., Winchester, Alice.
20 Winchester, Alice. VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847.
Princeton Pyne Press 1973 878610510 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Jonathan Fisher.
29 pp + 40 plates (printed on one side of leaf, captions facing), + (9) pp List of Works, 12 1/4" H. Colour plates plus additional b&w illustrations. The Reverend Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill, Maine "was a universal man - inventor, farmer, architect and builder, surveyor, linguist, naturalist. Above all he was an artist, translating his vision of the goodness and orderliness of God's creation into paintings and woodcuts. Made for his own enjoyment and that of his family and a few friends, Fisher's paintings have largely been preserved in the small community where he lived and worked for forty years. This book, while it reveals Fisher's many-sided personality, is basically devoted to illustrating his work. The majority of his paintings are published here for the first time - the water colors from his notebooks, begun when he was an undergraduate at Harvard, and lovingly bound with his own hands; a selection of his most important paintings in oil; and many of the woodcuts with which he illustrated his books. Here, carefully recorded, with straight-forward and painstaking realism, are Fisher's college and his village, the fruits of his garden, and the animals and birds of field and forest. No subject is too small to engage his interest, none too dry to be transformed by his imagination. The common house fly and a wondrous carrot are fully detailed; garlands of fruits and flowers run riot through his mathematical exercises." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, three edge tears archivally taped, very light rubbing, several light scratches on rear panel.
