CAMERA IN COLDITZ., Baybutt, Ron.
1 Baybutt, Ron. CAMERA IN COLDITZ.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1982, first edition.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340248238 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Colditz Castle is the Eiger North Wall of World War Two POW camps. It was the ultimate fortress for the bravest and the best, f or the most ingenious, most determined and daredevil spirits who had already effected an exit from lesser establishments of the Third Reich. From Colditz, it was boasted, there could be no escape. The stories of those Allied officers who t o o k u p t he challenge are now well known. But here for the first time a book gathers together a collection of the authentic official German photographs, actually taken on the spot within hours of various foiled escape attempts being discove r ed . S om e ti me s t hey are pictures of the stable door after the horse has fled successfully over the distant border. They were taken between the years 1941 and 1944 by Johannes Lange, a local Colditz town photographer of weddings and christ en ing s, de put ed by th e Thi rd Reich to record what the war's most persistent escapologists were up to....Lange's persistent camera also recorded escape equipment ingeniously devised by the backroom boys, from a compass in a walnut shell to a gl ider wh ich was mer cifu lly sa ved from the ultimate test of the launch pad by the end of the war. The stories are desperate and amazing, funny and tragic by turns, but always exciting. (This book) is also a tribute to the ingenuity and invi ncib ility of the huma n sp irit. " S oft cre ase at top corner of first three leaves, small area of discoloration at top edge of title page and the preceding page, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I., Ellis, John.
4 Ellis, John. EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I.
Pantheon, New York, 1976, first American edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0394496647 B&w photographs, map, diagrams. "(A) masterfully detailed reconstruction of what life was like for millions of men who lived and died in the trenches of World War I. Contin uing his trail-blazing approach to the study of war and militarism, Ellis reveals the physical and spiritual environment of this unique world, the rituals of battle, the habits of daily lfie, and the constant struggle of men to find meaning i n a w o r ld of excruciating boredom and impending death. (He) beings with a description of the physical construction of the trenches, their size and shape, their peculiarities and characteristics. The soldiers' daily life is succinctly portraye d: ho w t he y ate, drank, slept, joked, fought off rats and lice, how their sexual needs were met, and how they endured the marches and patrols. But it is in the ways men sought meaning in their daily lives that Ellis reveals the true nature of war f are . In an al yzing how the habits and regulations so dear to the military mind became entrenched in the organization of the battlefield, (this book) brilliantly depicts the instinctive desire of men in battle to create order out of chaos. Thr ou gh a n expl orat ion of the personal reflections of soldiers and the letters they wrote home, Ellis discovers a literature of compassion, courage, and a capacity to endure which arose from an environment of filth, decay, and death. It capt ures a w orld in whic h men fou ght, for reasons they hardly understood, for a future most had ceased to believe in by the end of the war." KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: CANADIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR I. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 18., Harris, John Norman. Illustrated by William Wheeler.
7 Harris, John Norman. Illustrated by William Wheeler. KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: CANADIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR I. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 18.
Macmillan, Toronto, 1960, reprint.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, B&w and black, white & green illustrations. "High above the mud and slaughter of the trenches, the little wood-and-fabric airplanes looped, rolled, banked, in mortal duel. So me of the soldiers who stared at them in the skies of France and Flanders in 1915 were Canadians. They had not dreamt that they would ever leave the ground. Yet within three years Canadians had proved themselves masters of this new form of f i g h t i n g and a dozen Canadians ranked among the top aces of the world. This book is about those Canadian masters of the aerial dogfight. Barker of Manitoba is here - incredibly daring hero of the French and Italian fronts who, with both legs a nd o ne a rm s hattered by enemy bullets, shot down four attackers and drove off the rest before he crashed behind his own lines: crowning exploit of a flying career in which he had destroyed 50 enemy aircraft. Collishaw of Vancouver is here, wi th his sc ore of 60 . Only half-a-dozen aces of all nations surpassed him - and only Bishop among the Canadians with his tally of 72. For Billy Bishop was most famous of all. In his first six weeks of flying he scored 17 victories and won the DSO and the MC. Fo ur w eeks later he added the VC. Many other aces are here - McKeever, MacLaren, Claxton, McCall, Quigley, Carter, Burden, Milne, Bell-Irving. Flying without parachutes in machines which burnt like torches when they caug ht f ire, thes e air men t ook f right ful risks. Below them, men lived in muddy trenches under shell-fire; they depended on the work of the airmen above and the airmen did not let them down. This is their story." Written for the younger reader. Pre vious owner 's nam e on f ront f ree en d paper, light browning to edges of text block and top/bottom edges of boards, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight browning on spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped has very small chips and te ars - mainly at top/ bottom of spin e, ligh t edge wear/wrinkling, several small tears with creases, light fading to spine color, slight browning. CALL TO ARMS: THE BRITISH ARMY 1914-18., Messenger, Charles.
9 Messenger, Charles. CALL TO ARMS: THE BRITISH ARMY 1914-18.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2005 0297846957 / 9780297846956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
574 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "(B)y the end of the war, over 8.5 million men had been recruited by Britain and the average field strength of its armies was 3.3 million men. For the first time, Britain found itself obliged to field land forces equal to those of its Continental neighbours. Moreover, however uncertain its beginnings, by 1918 this was an army that had become the most effective fighting force on the Western Front. In this exceptional account of the administration of the British Army in the First World War, Messenger charts how this unprecedented new force was raised, trained and deployed. He looks in detail at the problems of recruitment and training and at the difficulties of integrating regular troops with volunteers, and, later, conscripted men. The central question of manpower, both on the home front and in the trenches, above all after the first enthusiastic flood of volunteers had dried up, is examined in illuminating depth. He decribes how morale was sustained among men wholly unused to military life but fighting a war in which death was dealt out on an industrial scale. He looks, too, at the role of women, who for the first time played a significant role in a major conflict. Discipline, courts martial, the treatment of the wounded, the provision of clothing, the huge difficulties of feeding such a vast force, the awarding of medals and other honours, officer selection and the training of the Staff are just some of the themes in this magisterial new survey of the organization of Britain's Army in the First World War. Very slight cigarette odor. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing.

288 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "Munro has had enough adventures and brushes with death to fill ten lifetimes - like the time a cannon shell exploded off the wing of his Spitfire over the English Channel; or the time he took on the Vancouver Police Department and exposed corruption in its ranks; or the time his hot air balloon crashed in gale force winds in the wintry Irish Sea; or the time he caroused with movie great Errol Flynn in Mexico. He draws vivid portraits of the many people and personalities he has known throughout his action-filled life, including Gary Cooper, Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe, air ace Sir Douglas Bader and Eleanor Roosevelt." London Heinemann 1997 0434002917 / 9780434002917 2nd Printing Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Geoffrey Huband cover art.
275 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). "Conceived on paper as an invicible defence against enemy commerce raiders, the battlecruiser was hailed as a triumph. Romantically described as the fleet's greyhounds, these great ships, remarkable for their size and speed, were designed to outrun and outshoot any of their heavier opponents. But the Battle of Jutland exposed their fatal flaw, the weakness of their armour, which could be pierced by a single enemy shell. At the outbreak of World War II, only four of their class remain. In 1943, when Captain Guy Sherbrooke joins H.M.S. Reliant, he knows he may be her last captain. The battlecruisers Hood and Repulse, household names, have been destroyed. But Reliant is both legend and survivor, a lucky ship, and as Britain prepares to invade occupied Europe one of the last battlecruisers must enter the conflagration. And Sherbrooke, who commands her destiny, cannot alter the bitter truth: that for one of her ill-fated class there can be no half-measures. Only death or glory awaits H.M.S. Reliant." Mosaic Press / University College, Oakville / Toronto, (1990).
174 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in b&w and color with photos, reproductions, plans, elevations, etc. "(O)pens with an uninhibited view of the institutional history of the state college. A vivd narrative history of University College and its place in the municipal and social life of Victorian Toronto follows. The heart of the book is an architectural history of the University. This spans eight decades and is illustrated by many of the various architects' own drawings (almost none of which have ever been reproduced before). In the third chapter Richardson deals with the little-known and ambitious earlier projects of Charles Fowler, John Howard and Thomas Young, which were intended to provide splendidly for the University of King's College. Next he focuses on the grand design drawn up by Cumberland & Storm for its successor, University College (and the University of Toronto) in 1856, and then on (to) the realization of those plans in U.C. The last chapter brings the story down to the opening years of the twentieth century, including the development of the campus around the College, the fire that gutted most of it in 1890, and the reconstruction within the surviving shell under D .B. Dick." A few very small bumps to edges of front board, two very small light stains on fore-edge of textblock, very light edge wear. Five books from the Native Dwellings series. * A sixth book was issued (Houses of Wood: the Northwest coast) but is not included here.* 24 pages each, in glazed pictorial boards with map endpapers. Illustrated in colour and b&w with drawings and diagrams. 1. Houses of Snow, Skin and Bones - ISBN 0887762409, 1989 - "Northerners used whatever materials were to hand: snow, stone, earth, skin, bones and any driftwood found along the shores. How each type of dwelling was con-structed and lived in is told here through a simple text and illustrations that are informative and artistic." 2. House of Bark - ISBN 0887762468, 1990 - "Although native tribes build many sizes and styles of bark dwellings according to their survival needs, three main types emerge: the tipi, the wigwam and the longhouse. How all of these were constructed is made clear in Bonnie Shemie's detailed drawings and made humanly relevant in the beautiful double-page colored illustrations that are works of art." 3. Houses of Hide and Earth - ISBN 0887762697, 1991 - "The western plains are a windswept land of extreme summer heat and winter cold, without trees or other natural shelter. The Indians built their houses with the only materials they had: the skins of the buffalo they hunted or the soil dug from the earth around them. How they improved and adapted these materials to their needs and environment is the subject of this fascinating book. (Shemie) also discusses the earthlodge, dating from AD 700 and unlike anything we have today. Both tipi and earthlodge were laid out according to religious beliefs and symbols, as were other prairie buildings such as arbors, burial platforms, sweat lodges and the impressive structures used to celebrate the sun dance." 4. Mounds of Earth and Shell - ISBN 0887763189, 1993 - "Of all the buildings made by the Native peoples across North America, the least known and understood are the mounds. Who built these structures? Why did they build them? And where did the builders go? Mounds built of shell, and then of earth, date back over 3000 years. They were used for religious ceremonies, burial sites and hills to hold homes of the powerful. From Florida as far north as Ontario, and from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi Valley these structures are keys to our understanding of the earliest civilizations of North America's Native peoples." 5. House of Adobe - ISBN 0887763308, 1995 - "In the harsh, dry landscape of the American Southwest, the Native peoples built some of the continent's most enduring architecture out of adobe and stone. Bonnie Shemie explores the techniques used to create these dwellings and takes us to the impressive stone structures of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde, Colorado, the many pueblos of the region, and explains the significance of the kiva." Two volumes with a few very tiny dents on top edge of boards.

EERO SAARINEN., Spade, Rupert, introduction and notes. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa.
19 Spade, Rupert, introduction and notes. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa. EERO SAARINEN.
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1971, first American printing.
130 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour photographs, architectural drawings. "One of the most distinguished American architects of the mid-twentieth century, Eero Saarinen was born in 1910 in Finland, coming to the United States with his family in 1923. He was trained at the Yale University School of Architecture. After a period spent in Europe, he returned to the United States to join his father, Eliel Saarinen, in his practice in Cranbrook. Apart fro m h i s early furniture designs with Charles Eames, Saarinen's first truly personal success was in the competition for the Jefferson Memorial at St. Louis, Missouri, in which he submitted a design for the huge arch, clad in steel, which stands in t ha t c it y. Saarinen was responsible for several innovations, especially the use of thin high-performance curtain walls on a huge scale, a technique that he developed in the IBM Research Center at Yorktown, New York, and in the Bell Research Labo rat or ies at Holmdel, New Jersey. He also designed the first large-scale concrete-shell buildings in the United States (the Kresge Auditorium at the Massacussetts Institute of Technology), the controversial American Embassy in Grosvenor Square, Lond on, ano ther embassy building in Oslo, and the Banque Lambert headquarters in Brussels. But it was perhaps in his designs for airports (especially the TWA terminal at Kennedy Airport, New York, with its emphasis on a feeling of movemnt, and the D ulle s Int ernat ional Airport near Washington, with its mobile lounges) that Saarinen made his most original contribution to the architecture of our time."
