First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. 134 pp, 11 7/8" H. Map endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(C)hronicles the significant aeronautical events which took place in the Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway region from 1825 to 1914. The uninformed reader glancing at the topographical map may wonder as to what possible level of pioneering aviation activity could be sustained in a predominantly mountainous region where man is grossly outnumbered by sheep - yet between these years it was to encapsulate almost all aspects of man's aeronautical endeavour, from ballooning, parachuting, gliding, aircraft and airship construction to aero engine production. Cumbria is the birthplace of both British naval and civil marine aviation and for the first time the full exciting story is told aided by many previously unpublished documents and photographs." 9 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

But could he handle the good keen girl whom he b rough home as the Mistress of Blackrange Station? Born under Virgo (his fortunate gemstone was the sardonyx) Kersey Hooper married a Capricorn. 16 Fuller, John. THE EXTRAORDINARY WOOL MILL AND OTHER STORIES.
London Andre Deutsch 1980 0233971963 / 9780233971964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Peter Rush.
96 pp, 8 1/16" H. B&w illustrations. "Can you fall through a hole in the water? How do you make Purple Cow Pudding? Can you remember someone who doesn't exist? Why shouldn't a wool mill be run by sheep? Why isn't the sky yellow and spring flowers blue? How do you get the fattest woman in the world out of a cottage that is almost smaller than she is? You'll find all the answers in these stories about Emily, who has some strange adventures or says she does. You may not believe in what falls on her from the sky (her sisters didn't) and it surely can't be true that she shouts out Martian words in her sleep, but can you explain away that mysterious little yellow van? Or the fact that the village under the sea is really there on the map? As well as ghosts and dreams there are lots of ordinary things in this book, like building a beach bonfire or mending a car's fan-belt. Peter Rush's line drawings beautifully reflect the subtle mixture of fantasy and solid reality which is so important a part of these stories." Contents: The Extraordinary Wool Mill; Beach Menu; The Little Yellow Van; Pegglara Pellew; The Hole in the Water; Forgotten; Cold Feet; The Fattest Woman in the World; 'They're Coming!'; A Spring Walk. Small stamp mark on title page, slight color fading to top edge of boards and spine. Michael Joseph, London, 1964, first edition.
119 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This is the story of a small French-Canadian boy and his attachment to an old horse that belongs to the local undertaker. It is also the story of his ne'er-do-well uncle who arrives on the scene from the lumber camps full of good intentions and the best of spiritis. Uncle Jean-Marie has no money, but that wouldn't trouble him. His attitude to the ladies of the suspicious little town is watched. Jean-Marie is supposed eventually to b e j o i n i n g his brother in the family grocery business at the Supermart. Instead he is building a stable for the horse and singing in the glee club. The rather intricate relationship between Jean-Marie, his nephew and the various ladies - to s a y no th in g of t he school-teacher, Miss Rogers - comes to life in this most unusual and charming book with astonishing vividness. MARGARET - A WOMAN OF CONFLICT., James, Paul.
20 James, Paul. MARGARET - A WOMAN OF CONFLICT.
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1990, first edition.
202 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0283999047 B&w photographs. "Upon becoming the first memeber of the royal family to appear on 'Desert Island Discs', Princess Margaret told broadcaster Roy Plomley that she had be 'mi sreported and misrepresented since the age of seventeen'. Despite the fact that both her public and private life is frequently reported with relish and often distorted by the tabloid press, we know surprisingly little about the Queen's only s i s t e r , who has so often been regarded as the black sheep of the royal circle. To coincide with Princess Margaret's sixtieth birthday, expert royal commentator Paul James has written a thoroughgoing and impartial biographical study of the c o nt ro ve rs ia l Pr incess. He illustrates her struggles between personal desire and public duty, the opposition she faced in her relationship with Peter Townsend, the pressures of marriage to a non-royal which led to divorce, and the love-hate re lat ion shi p w hic h she has formed with the media, together with her fight for her individuality within the confines of the royal family. (This book) will provide the reader with a compelling insight into the public and private worlds of one o f t he s tron gest and mos t colo urful characters in the royal family, looking back over a life which has contained more than its fair share of conflict and turmoil." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at to p/bo ttom of sp ine a nd fl ap-fo ld s, fa ding to color on spine and rear hinge/rear top edge areas - lettering still very legible on spine.
