THE QUIET FIELDS., 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford.
1 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford. THE QUIET FIELDS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." 3 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

"On May 15, 1864, at a little crossroads hamlet in Virginia, the fate of the Shenandoah Valley may have been decided and, with it, the ability of the Confederac y to survive in Virginia for another season. (This) is the story of one of those seemingly incredible hair's-breadth miracles that now and then dot the Civil War landscape. A scratch force of hastily assembled Confederates, outnumbered up t o t h e l ast minute, meets and decisively overcomes a superior Yankee army A former vice president and one-time candidate for the presidency commands the Rebel forces. The Corps of Cadets of Virginia Military Institute - some of them boys no ol de r t ha n f ou rteen - march to battle with the veterans, commencing a tradition and a legend that persist to this day. All these and more make up the dramatic story of New Market, and are told here in the most thoroughly researched and clearly pre se nte d b oo k eve r written on this legendary battle. New York Harper & Brothers 1939 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Paul Braun & Arthur Mooney, photography. Inscribed By Author
290 pp, 8 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth spine (with gilt lettering/decoration) and corners, light blue paper-covered boards and endpapers. B&w photographs by Paul Braun, Arthur Mooney and others. Inscribed on half title page: "Norah and Chew Atkins / their book inscribed in / memory of old times by / Hulbert Footner / Jan 22nd 1940". Also included, an autograph letter signed by Footner, on Charlesgift notepaper, referring to a possible visit and mentioning that "For August everything too, is uncertain. I have a lot of theatrical business coming to a head, and it may be necessary for me to be in New York at that time." (Footner uses small x's instead of periods in the text.) The envelope is postmarked Solomons, MD, 1916. During the 1916-17 season, Footner's play "Shirley Kaye" had a reasonably successful run at the Hudson Theatre, New York and the proceeds helped in the restoration of Charles' Gift. Also laid in at front, the previously folded, chipped and wrinkled/creased front panel and flap from the original dust jacket. Hulbert Footner (1879-1944) explored large areas of Northern Canada by canoe in his early years and produced works of fiction and non-fiction based on his experiences. He was also a playwright and in later life, a successful mystery writer, creating such characters as Madame Rosika Storey. This semi-autobiographical book details the purchase and restoration of an historic house, but also looks back into the history of Calvert County and recounts the people and events that played a part in Footner's life for over thirty years. Minor wrinkle at top of spine, light browning and scattered tiny/small foxing marks on edges of text block - mainly on top and top corner, a few small foxing marks on preliminary pages and on the last few blank papes, a few tiny dents on bottom of text block.

WOLFE AT QUEBEC., Hibbert, Christopher.
10 Hibbert, Christopher. WOLFE AT QUEBEC.
Longmans, Green, London, 1959, first edition.
194 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, maps. "In the early hours of the morning on 13th September 1759, a British flotilla drifted silently on the ebb tide down the St Lawrence River towards Quebec. A last and desperate at tempt was being made to capture the town before the ice closed over the river and made further operations that season impossible. By dawn over 4,000 men had disembarked from the landing craft and clambered up the steep and slippery slopes on t o t h e Plains of Abraham. The French were taken completely by surprise and the battle that followed was short and dramatic. By noon the fate of Canada had been decided. In describing the events of this day and the bitter and seemingly hopel e ss s i eg e th at preceded it, (the author) has relied entirely upon contemporary sources, some of which were not available when previous accounts were written. For this reason the story which has emerged is in some respects an unfamiliar one an d the in ci den ta l p ortrait of Wolfe, stripped of the sentimental veneer which two centuries of adulation have built around him, is one which will surprise many readers. (This book) provides not only a vivid account of what has been described a s the most im port ant eve nt in the history of the 18th century, but a fascinating portrait of one of its most famous soldiers." Book slightly cocked, bump at bottom corner of boards, very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling a nd bro wning at botto m of spin e, a few very tiny soiling specks on top of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two small edge tears, corner crease on front flap, light soiling, light brow nin g on spine and flap-f olds, a few small brown stains at bottom of spine. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY., Hughes, Spike.
11 Hughes, Spike. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY.
London Robert Hale 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
156 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "The term 'out of season' is purely relative, of course. The winter's journey which took Spike Hughes and his wife to Sicily and back, by way of Germany and Austria, was made at a time of year which, so far from being out of season, was at the very height of the seaons for their purpose: the study of famous Italian opera houses in full operatic cry, as it were. In the course of a journey of some 4,000 miles (they) found many things to delight them, not the least important being an atmosphere of leisure and an opportunity to stand and stare which can be achieved only out of season. So it was that by visiting in winter places which normally thrive as summer resorts he found time to learn many things which would 'come in useful' to anybody willing to profit from his experiences and likely to spend holidays in those places at a more conventional time of year. In the end, the difference between visiting Italy in winter was the difference between being fussed over and spoiled as a guest and being allowed to live one's own life without having to distinguish one day from another. And that, Spike Hughes believes, is the greatest luxury any form of travel can take." Scattered foxing marks on edges of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning on endpapers. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, foxing on inside surface.
