New York Harper 2012 0062030310 / 9780062030313 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

Macmillan, London, 1977, first edition.
232 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333198670 B&w illustrations. "Years of detailed research into Celtic and Arthurian history have brought Geoffrey Ashe face to face with wider mysteries and conundrums that go to the heart of human civilisation. This book is a quest for an original and universal knowledge - the Ancient Wisdom - nutured by priests, shamans and occultists, claimed by scientists and historians since earliest times. Dissatisfied with theories of l ost Atlantis or alien astronauts bequeathing our cultural heritage, Geoffrey Ashe is still convinced that the Ancient Wisdom is not just a legend. But what is it? Is it still at work? In the tradition of Robert Graves and his search for t h e W h i t e Goddess, he investigates the puzzles of ancient mythology and religions. From the magical lore of numbers he unearths the clue that leads from the world of the Middle East and the Mediterranean to the mountain fastnesses of Siberi a - an d d ev as ta ti ng confirmation of the Ancient Wisdom's existence." THE GOLDEN PRINCESS., Baron, Alexander.
12 Baron, Alexander. THE GOLDEN PRINCESS.
Cape, London, 1954, first edition.
402 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "When Hernan Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519 he met an Indian slave girl, Marina, whose beauty and intelligence destined her to a remarkable career. Few records of her life exist, but she is still a l egendary figure among the people of Mexico. The background of her story is one of the most astonishing adventures in history, the conquest of the mighty Aztec empire by four hundred white men; an episode replete with the ingredients of roman c e - N a ture's barriers surmounted, feats of arms, fantastic stratagems, enemies overcome. In this novel, Alexander Baron sees Marina and Cortes not only as lovers but as adversaries in a terrible struggle. Cortes, one of history's classical h er oe s , i s de picted in all his power and glory, but the flaw in him, the seed of human weakness in the 'man of destiny', is laid bare. Against him stands Marina, primitive and untaught, but growing, with experience, in mental and moral stature; aw ake ni ng t o som ething to which her lover is blind - the human search for good - so that a conflict between them becomes inevitable. (The author's) approach to his theme is avowedly romantic. He believes that some aspects of the nature and dest iny of man ar e most truthfully revealed by the romantic vision. His novel abounds with big, vivid characters; but each of them is examined with insight, and is a unique, complex human being." Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine
