255 pp, 4to (12 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Color and b&w photographs, reproductions. ISBN 9768097302 "The identities of serious women artists have too often been omitted from historical accounts and their achievements have been misunderstood or undervalued. By comparison, their male counterparts have invariably been accorded most attention and given the status of innovators. (This book) is the first comprehensive study of the subject, and makes a significant contribution towards redressing the balance. In tracing the lives and careers of over eighty of these women, it shows that New Zealand women painters, sculptors and other art makers have achieved vital and significant imagery. In doing so, it brings fresh insights to the development of the visual arts in Aotearoa." Corner crease at bottom of page 143/144, light edge wear, slight waviness to edges of textblock. BAROQUE IN ITALY., Lees-Milne, James.
6 Lees-Milne, James. BAROQUE IN ITALY.
B.T. Batsford, London, 1959, first edition.
216 pp, large 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans. "(Lees-Milne writes about) the development of building in Italy from the Mannerist period, that is, the later sixteenth century, to the emergence of Rococo in the early eighteenth century. (He) believes that Baroque in Italy was a religious manifestation, Latin, Catholic and primarily Roman and his book deals largely with ecclesiastical architecture in Rome itself. Piedmont was the next most i mportant influence in the style, and so, after introducting the colossal personalities of Bernini, Borromini and their disciples, he concentrates upon the work of Guarini, Juvara and their followers. But he is not conerned exclusively with ar c h i t e c ture; he discusses the Baroque style as it manifested itself in the work of the painters, such as Caravaggio and Pietro da Cortona and the sculptors, above all Bernini. In reading the book the reader has the grateful impression, not so mu ch o f be in g instructed, as of sharing in the author's own pleasures and discoveries, for Mr. Lees-Milne has a winning and persuasive style exceptional in a work of learning." PAUL MANSHIP., Manship, John.
7 Manship, John. PAUL MANSHIP.
Abbeville, New York, 1989, first edition.
216 pp, folio (13 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1558590021 Beautifully illustrated in color and b&w. "From his sexy little bronze nymphs to his soaring golden 'Prometheus' at Rockefeller Center, the sculptures of Paul Manship have begu iled the public through much of this century. This dazzling monograph - as elegantly sophisticated as the artist's own oeuvre - celebrates the life's work of America's master of Art Deco.....As close to a jet setter as one could be in an e r a o f o c e an travel, Manship spent much of the early 1920s in Paris, where he was one of two American sculptors to have work included in the famous 'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes' (the show that gave us th e t er m A rt D ec o). His worldwide reputation flourished in the 1930s with monumental commissions for the Bronx Zoo, Rockefeller Center, the New York World's Fair, and a multitude of other. The age of Abstract Expressionism eventually threw Man sh ip in to e cli pse , b ut the rediscovery of Art Deco illuminated the charms of his work once again, and his sculptures are again highly admired and passionately collected. This lively biography, affectionately written by Manship's son, pr ovid es muc h ne w i nfo rmat ion abou t the artist's long and productive career. The full range of that career is made vividly clear in the striking illustrations, many never before published. Because Manship was meticulous about documenting his work, th e bo ok in clud es r are s tudi es an d plasters that no longer exist, a revelatory sampling of little-known early and late works, and pristine original views of works that have since suffered the effects of time and weather. The result i s an e ngag ing, enligh tenin g boo k that deft ly cap tures the spirit of an artist wholeheartedly devoted to the pursuit of beauty." Slight waviness to top/bottom of textblock. Spring Books, London, nd.
195 pp, large square 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour plates. "One of the most fascinating periods in European art history, the Baroque marks a triumphant break with the rules and restrictive for mulas of the Renaissance. Its genius was Bernini, whose sustained imaginative powers and incredible technical skill brought the Baroque style to its fullest maturity. In lesser hands, where the mastery of technique was not so assured and the cr e a t ive imagination not so well disciplined, the pitfalls are all too obvious. No style perhaps has ever captured the imagination quite so quickly; throughout Europe commissions poured in, wealthy landowners and rich merchants vying with each oth er t o express their ambitions and achievements in building, painting and sculpture, in itself an interesting sidelight on social history. The Czech lands were no exception, and the variety and high level of achievement in the contemporary Baroque st yle a re amply illustrated by the plates in this present volume. The accompanying text supplies a full documentation of Czech sculpture of the period and discusses in detail a number of important artists whose work deserves to be more widely k nown ." 160 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photographs. "(T)he first comprehensive exploration of Blumenfeld's work, (this book) forms a uniquely detailed study of her development. Dividing her sculpture into eight themed chapters, it concentrates on the major ideas and technical concerns that have preoccupied the artist from the beginning: Two Sides of a Woman; Creation; Metamorphosis; Options; Shadow Figures; Dreams; Souls; and, finally, Mythology. Early and recent works are illustrated side by side, highlighting the aesthetic and conceptual growth which has earned her respect from critics and collectors throughout Europe and the United States. (Upson's) text illuminates Blumenfeld's intense working methods and reveals how her life - divided between Italy, where she works, England, where she now lives, and the United States, where she was born - contributes to her creativity. Each chapter provides an introduction to the individual pieces, a review of Blumenfeld's contribution to twentieth-century sculpture, and concludes with Blumenfeld's own thought-provoking comments on her work."
