3 Chalmers, Lord. BUDDHA'S TEACHINGS, BEING THE SUTTA-NIPATA OR DISCOURSE-COLLECTION, EDITED IN THE ORIGINAL PALI TEXT WITH AN ENGLISH VERSION FACING IT.
Motilal Banarsidass, Delhi, 2000.
300 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 8120813553 "(C)ontains a metrical English rendering of an important Buddhist work in Pali named the 'Sutta-Nipata' with the original text in Romanized version on the opposite page. The Pali Canon, as it has come down to us, is divided into three Pitakas or 'baskets', viz. Vinaya-Pitaka, Sutta-Pitaka and Abhidhamma-Pitaka. The Sutta-Nipata, translated here, contains an ancient, probably the most ancient, part of the Sutta- P i t a k a . It belongs to that portion of the Sutta-Pitaka which is named Khuddaka Nikaya or 'Collection of Short Treatises' as distinct from the four long Nikayas called Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Anguttara. Of the five Vaggas (or 'books') of t he p re se nt Sutta-Nipata the fifth stands out from its fellows by reason of its purposeful unity. While th Uraga, Maha, Cula and Atthaka Vaggas consist each of a collection of independent and unconnected poems (sometimes interspersed with pr ose ) c all ed 'Su tta s', the Parayana aims at a dramatic synthesis. Its prologue and epilogue serve as a setting for the sixteen Questions which elicit Gotama's gradual exposition of the saving 'Way Across'." Faint discoloration on cloth boar ds. Dus t ja cket ha s li ght edge wear/wrinkling, one small tear with creases taped, light rubbing, soft crease on spine, very small label from bookstore on front flap. Very Good/Very Good-

4 Chambers, W. CHAMBERS'S HISTORICAL AND MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS, EMBRACING HISTORY, SCIENCE, LITERATURE, ARTS, &C. (CHAMBER'S).
William and Robert Chambers, London, 1866.
In two sections: Historical - 204 pp; Miscellaneous - 209 pp., small 8vo, hard cover - no dust jacket. Small b&w illus within text. "The present work is designed to fulfil an important purpose in EDUCATION - that of bringing clearly into view the leading facts which are supposed to be gained through a long course of instruction. Without proposing to supersede the elementary books usually employed, it offers a certain test of what is presumed to have been previously learned. With such a work in their hands, Schoolmasters, Tutors, Governesses, or Parents, may at once satisfy themselves as to the degree of knowledge on a variety of subjects attained by the young persons under their charge, and for whose intellectual culture they feel a special interest. At the same time - in this age of Competitive Examination - the work offers to candidates for Official Appointments the means of readily and perspicuously calling to remembrance answers to such questions in History, Science, Art, Literature, and General Knowledge, as are likely to be asked of them; thereby, perhaps, saving the reperusal of a multiplicity of books which they would otherwise have to consult and patiently study. As regards the Answers to the Questions, every effort has been made to render them brief and of easy acquisition, in regular consecutive order according to subjects; while the facts they present, based on the most recent authorities, are just those which, from their interest and importance, are expected to be less or more borne on the mind of every 'well-informed person' of either sex." Interior - browning to pages/endpapers, some light 'thumbing' to margins, light brown stain at bottom corner of preliminaries - overall sound with no writing/names, etc. Exterior - light/moderate edge wear/rubbing, light corner wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, dust staining to text block edges, light scuffing to spine. TANKS AND TRENCHES: FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF TANK WARFARE IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Fletcher, David, editor.
6 Fletcher, David, editor. TANKS AND TRENCHES: FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF TANK WARFARE IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Grange, London, 1996, reprint.
214 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1856279065 B&w photographs. "These echoes from the early days of tank warfare give an idea of the crucial role that tanks played in breaking the murderous stalemate on the Western Fron t. This influence was acknowledged by friend and foe alike and, while not decisive, it certainly hastened the end of that dreadful conflict, saving thousands of Allied lives and ushering in a new era of mechanised warfare. (The editor) d r a w s h i s m aterial exclusively from the archives of the world famous Tank Museum at Bovington Camp, Dorset. His linking narrative guides us through the war, battle by battle, from 15 September 1916 to the Armistice, using firsthand accounts of t he t a nk a ct i on s, extracts from unit war diaries and other primary sources. Many of these accounts are previously unpublished or have had limited circulation, providing us with a fresh and vivid insight into the early days of tank warf are . A w eal th of or igi na l p hotographs showing the tanks and their crews both in action and at rest support these vivid accounts. Their relevance is further enhanced by a selection of contemporary aerial reconnaissance photographs revealing the t opog raph y o f th e la ndsc ape ove r which many of the battles were fought." Book lightly cracked at pages 116/117 and slightly at pages 52/53. Very Good/Fine

11 Hilling, John B. Foreword by Group Captain T.G. 'Hamish' Mahaddie. STRIKE HARD: A BOMBER AIRFIELD AT WAR. RAF DOWNHAM MARKET AND ITS SQUADRONS 1942-46.
Stroud, Gloucestershire Budding / Sutton 1997 1840150017 / 9781840150018 Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
141 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, etc. "This is an account of one small cog in the machinery of the Second World War - the story of the RAF bomber airfield at Downham Market in Norfolk . Every night for three long years young men of RAF Bomber Command flew from this East Anglian airfield in their Stirlings, Lancasters and Mosquitoes to pound into dust the might of Nazi Germany. Their contribution towards winning the war was crucial, but the cost in precious lives and equipment was high: 160 aircraft and nearly 900 airmen were lost on operations. Downham Market was notable in a number of ways, not least for the fact that two posthumous Victoria Crosses were won by its pilots (out of a total of only twenty-one for the whole of Bomber Command), and that it was the second of fifteen airfields in England to be equipped with the life-saving fog dispersal device known as FIDO. It was from Downham Market that the RAF 's last bombing sortie of the European air war was flown on 2/3 May 1945. Between 1942 and 1945 at various times the airfield hosted six bomber squadrons: Nos 214, 218 and 623 were Main Force squadrons in No 3 Group, and then f rom March 1944 Nos 571, 608 and 635 were a part of the RAF's elite No 8 (Pathfinder) Group. 'Strike Hard' is not so much a chronological history, but a microcosm of Bomber Command during the war years. Supported by more than fifty photographs, maps and plans, each chapter focuses on a separate aspect of life on the airfield, and of the bomber operations flown from there. The author has drawn on a number of sources, ranging from official to published and private material, to give a fascinating depiction of a bomber airfield at war." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

12 Jewell, Mark. With Rachel Christenson. SELLING ENERGY: INSPIRING IDEAS THAT GET MORE PROJECTS APPROVED! VOLUME 1.
Energy Efficiency Funding Group 2014 1941991009 / 9781941991008 Hard Cover Fine Fine Inscribed By Author
202 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Non-personal inscription by author on title page. Color illustrations. "Based on twenty years of experience influencing efficiency decision-making in more than three billion square feet of properties, this author concludes that many more projects would be approved if energy professionals were actually trained to 'sell' rather than simply 'promote' efficiency. Energy efficiency products, services, and programs all require effective selling. Professional sales skills make you more successful at advancing any energy efficiency initiative, regardless of your role in the process. Moreover, you need to think of yourself as a sales professional even if your job title does not include the word 'sales'. This book contains more than 80 short essays, each of which examines a unique aspect of efficiency-focused professional selling."

Wren, n.p., (1975).
233 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, reproductions. "(Lieut.-Colonel W. D. Joynt, V.C.) begins by outlining the Australian role in the events of March, April and May 1918, when the British 2nd and 5th Armies were near collapse following the German Spring Offensive. Colonel Joynt's personal diary covering the period January to August 1918, here published in full, adds immediacy to the account of these days...gives the most vivid and accurate picture of the situation at this time, so far as the Ist (Australian) Division was concerned in it. The author summarizes the final days of World War I and, in an epilogue, relates some of his experiences of the British warmth towards Australian servicemen in the immediate postwar period." 14 Mercer, Patrick. DUST AND STEEL.
London HarperCollins 2010 000730272X / 9780007302727 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
390 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w map. "As the ship docked in Bombay, Anthony Morgan and his company, fresh from England, were given their first orders: the execution of mutineers using artillery to blow them to pieces. This was the harsh reality of the mutiny that swept British India where massacres of men, women and children on both sides were commonplace. Into this plunged Morgan, bewildered by the complications of tribe, caste, religion and deep-seated racial hatred among those he led as well as fought, and yet he was expected to triumph. The Mutiny was one of the greatest challenges to the Victorian Empire - it seared itself into the psyche of both Indians and British for a century and more. (This) is a gripping novel about a soldier's dilemma between orders, saving his career, and a matter of his honour." Minor lean to spine, minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

DAVID AND MAX. BASED ON A BIZARRE AND TRAGIC INCIDENT OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Simonds, Peter.
15 Simonds, Peter. DAVID AND MAX. BASED ON A BIZARRE AND TRAGIC INCIDENT OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Aurora, Nashville, Tennessee, 1977.
265 pp + Appendix, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 876951744 "Conspiracy and intrigue surround this account of an actual World War II incident. The scene is Holland in the twilight of theThird Reich. In preparation for Hitl er's last attempt to achieve a military victory, or a negotiated peace, two young German corporals are sent behind enemy lines to chart the bearing strength of the soil for the Panzer's path to Antwerp, the seaport vital to Eisenhower. The m i s s i o n fails and the two corporals, David Kohn and Max Unger, surrender to the Canadians as deserters without divulging the nature of their mission. After the German surrender in May 1945, the Germans demand their return as traitors and, fo r re as on s sh ro u ded in secrecy, the Canadians not only comply with the request, but supply the unarmed Germans with guns for the execution. Frantic attempts to save the two young men by their Canadian friends fail. The incident raises importa nt an d t ime ly qu est io ns on the ethics and behavior of political and military structures. New evidence suggests Allied complicity with the Germans in anticipation of Russian aggression in Europe immediately after the war. Were David and Max sa crif icia l sh eep in the cov ert dealings of once hostile governments? Institutional face-saving adds unexpected dimensions to the bizarre and provoking drama of two human pawns, 'David and Max'." The author has fictionalized some of the nam es a nd ch aract ers w here he felt , in fairness, he did not have all the facts bearing on their participation. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has moderate rubbing on spine - light rubbing elsewhere, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Very Good+ /Very Good-

ARROW THROUGH THE HEART: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF CRAWFORD GORDON AND THE AVRO ARROW., Stewart, Greig.
17 Stewart, Greig. ARROW THROUGH THE HEART: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF CRAWFORD GORDON AND THE AVRO ARROW.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1998, first edition.
216 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0075601028 B&w photographs. "The argument persists whether Crawford Gordon was one of the greatest industrialists and business minds this country has produced or whether he was just a canny political cowboy who herded the imagination of an entire country into his corral of schemes and moneymaking junkets. Unfortunately, Gordon was in many ways like the project of his life - the ill-fated, now almost legendary, Avro Arrow. Both rose quickly, promising great feats, and both met their ends quickly and tragically, much too soon for the rest of us to determine their true potential. Still, no one can deny that in his short life, Gordon's accomplishments were considerable. Whe n Crawford Gordon led A.V. Roe in the 1950s, it was the third largest company in Canada. And when he laid off almost 15,000 workers in February 1959 in response to the Diefenbaker government's decision to scrap the Arrow, this was an unprece d e n t e d and shocking move. Was this a calculated attention-getting maneuvre aimed at saving the Arrow program or a bitter vengeful shot at the Diefenbaker regime? To get a sense of the man behind the business (the author) delved into the publ ic a rc hi ve s a nd interviewed more than 30 people - family members, friends, and business colleagues. Written in co-operation with the Gordon family, Stewart was given access to Crawford Gordon's private papers and never-before published photos ." Mi nor wr ink li ng at top/bottom of spine.
