207 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). B&w illustrations. "There have been few more consistent, or more satisfying, targets for cartoonists over the centuries than Royalty - above all in Britain where for over three hundred years our reigning monarchs have been satirised or flattered, ridiculed or glorified in the public print. (This book) sets out to document this continuing confrontation between the establishment and the caricaturists, from the reign of Elizabeth I to the present day. Political crises, religious schisms, national scandals and passing indiscretions all kindled the fires of contemporary cartoonists' inspiration: Charles I and Parliament, Popish plots and Jacobite invasions, Hanoverian mistresses, the excesses of the Regency, William IV and reform, Victoria and her ministers, Edward VII and his escapades, the Abdication crisis. Here too are the foreigners' views of our kings and queens and royal relatives, and generations of royal courtships and coronations, pomp and patronage seen through the eyes of some of Britain's greatest cartoonists. The work of Gillray, Rowlandson, Cruikshank, Tenniel, May, Beerbohm, Giles, Trog, and many others is testament to freedom of expression in this country and gives a fascinating perspective on the chequered careers of our rulers." Previous owner's initials, place and date in ink on free front endpaper; two tiny soiling marks on free front endpaper; light wear on bottom of boards; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 173 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0712610677 B&w cartoons. "Readers who enjoyed 'Tales From the Mess' will be glad to know that that collection by no means exhausted its compiler's rich fund of anecdotes about the absurder a spects of life in the British army. Further researches have enabled Miles Noonan to assemble this sequel which again, while in no way reducing our admiration for the Nation's armed forces, will not encourage us to regard them with excessiv e s o l e m n i ty. Once again the settings of the tales range geographically from Malaya to Ireland and from South Africa to Liverpool and historically from Victorian times to the present day, and once again Miles Noonan does not vouch for their ab s ol ut e un va rn is hed truthfulness." This witty and ingenious book delves into the hidden meanings of the most innocuous-sounding nursery rhymes, revealing a seething subtext of sexual innuendo, religious hatred and political subversion. 337 pp, 9 1/2" H. "Common sense has always been a cornerstone of American politics. In 1776, Tom Paine's vital pamphlet with that title sparked the American Revolution. And today, common sense - the wisdom of ordinary people, knowledge so self-evident that it is beyond debate - remains a powerful political ideal, utilitzed alike by George W. Bush's aw-shucks articulations and Barack Obama's down-to-earth reasonableness. But far from self-evident is where our faith in common sense comes from and how its populist logic has shaped modern democracy. (This) is the first book to explore this essential political phenomenon. The story begins in the aftermath of England's Glorious Revoluton, when common sense first became a political ideal worth struggling over. Sophia Rosenfeld's accessible and insightful account then wends its way across two continents and multiple centuries, revealing the remarkable individuals who appropriated the old, seemingly universal idea of common sense and the new strategic uses they made of it. Paine may have boasted that common sense is always on the side of the people and opposed to the rule of kings, but Rosenfeld demonstrates that common sense has been used to foster damagoguery and exclusivity as well as popular sovereignty." Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling at top edge.
