HINDU HORSEMAN., Holder, Denzil, Lt. Col.
2 Holder, Denzil, Lt. Col. HINDU HORSEMAN.
(Picton, Chippenham, 1986).
217 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, reproductions. "The author, apart from being a dedicated soldier, was a brilliant horseman and polo player, travelling the world playing polo while on leave. Saw action in the First World War, on through the balmy years between the Wars, mainly in India, and then to fight in North Africa during the Second World War. Eventually, invalided out of the Army due to wounds sustained in Eritrea. These are the reminiscences of a Cavalry Officer of probably the most famous Indian Cavalry Regiment. Raised in 1803 as 'Captain Skinner's Corps of Irregular Horse', but known as 'The Yellow Boys' owing to the colour of their uniform. But it is not really a book about 'the army ', it is a book about people, places, and polo." 6 Masters, John. BUGLES AND A TIGER: A VOLUME OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Michael Joseph. 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Good Poor
312 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). B&w illustrations. "(T)he story of how an English schoolboy became a professional soldier in the Indian Army, and in it the reader will find an absorbing picture of India in a time and as a way of life that has gone forever. It is a book of history - from the drill parades, fights, high life, and education at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst to the outbreak of the Second World War. It is a book of action - of danger and near-death, and bivouacs in the merciless sleet of Waziristan. It is a book of color - the silver, mahogany, tradition, and comradeship of the regimental mess; the thousands of tiny lights of Dewali; the exotic color of the jungles; and the snow-capped heights of the mountains. There is humor in the book, and love as well, but most of all it is a book that tells the truth about the days of a young soldier's years, and tells it eagerly and passionately, the way the days were lived. The objectivity and honesty of the writing clarify the book's importance as a moving and permanent contribution to our understanding of some of the people and events that made our world what it is." Previous owner's name on front pastedown and on free front endpaper, book is lightly cocked, crease down free rear endpaper - softer crease down pages 306 to end of book, moderate edge wear to boards, patches of heavy fading to color at top and bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block, several pages with tiny chip/tear at bottom edge, a few tiny liquis marks on top of text block. Dust jacket is in poor condition - flaps are complete.
