MORRICE: A GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST REDISCOVERED., Laing, G. Blair. Introduction by Jean Sutherland Boggs.
2 Laing, G. Blair. Introduction by Jean Sutherland Boggs. MORRICE: A GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST REDISCOVERED.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1984 0771045689 / 9780771045684 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good James Wilson Morrice.
224 pp, 11 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions. "James Wilson Morrice is one of the twentieth century's most talented and lyrical painters. Whether depicting a Quebec village in winter, a Paris cafe, or a North African market place, Morrice's vibrant colours and perfectly balanced compositions capture his subjects in a suspended timelessness. The story of (his) life is no less colourful than his paintings. The young James's passion for art took him in 1890, at the age of twenty-five, from his wealthy Montreal background to Paris. It was here, among other artists such as Matisse, and writers such as Somerset Maugham and Arnold Bennett, that he felt a true kinship. And it was not long before Morrice's paintings were seen in the great Salons of Paris, and sent to the Montreal Art Association and the Canadian Art Club in Toronto for exhibition. Laing's fascinating account reveals the complexity of Morrice's genius and gives a definitive picture of James Wilson Morrice - the man, the artist, and his work." Slight waviness at top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has light toning on spine, flap-folds and some edges; one small edge tear archivally taped; minor edge wrinkling.

Grange, Hoo, Rochester, 2000.
304 pp, folio (14 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840133732 Profusely illustrated in colour. "Built to astonish and to celebrate the magnificence of the most powerful families in the world, royal palaces and houses are the consequences of an age in which the splendor and opulence of a prince or a people could be measured by the decor of a salon, by the grandeur of a building or the originality of a fountain. Suspended between the sky and the earth, as occurred in the Far East, or solidly rooted to the ground, as was the norm in Europe, the house of the monarch has alwys been the meeting point of two minds: that of the master, who saw in his house the expression of his power and creativity, and that of the architect a n d t e a m s of craftsmen who built it for him, often creating a noble monument rather than a place to live....This book tells of the mysteries and legends of the buildings and the official and secret versions of the history of their occupants. T he t e xt i s co mplemented by a series of splendid photographs that together offer the reader a visit through space and time to the most famous palaces of the world where the lives of royal families and their courts burned bright and where bea uty mi xed w ith po we r." 5 Turner, Elizabeth Hutton. With essays by Elizabeth Garrity Ellis, Guy Davenport. AMERICANS IN PARIS (1921-1931). MAN RAY, GERALD MURPHY, STUART DAVIS, ALEXANDER CALDER.
Counterpoint / Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., 1996.
171 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "Paris welcomed Gerald Murphy, whose billboard-sized cubist icon dominated the 1924 Salon des Independants and launched a brief but brilliant career; Stuart Davis, who explored the continuity between cubist painting, lithography, and jazz at the atelier Desjobert,; Man Ray, who abandoned oils to begin 'painting with light' in his movies and rayographs; and Alexander Calder, whose wire circuses and portraits inspired critics to acknowledge art's inherent playfulness. (This book) documents the work and influence of these four notables of the avant-garde who startle and delight us even today...Richly illustrated and beautifully designed, this volume is a feast for the eyes and the intellect. It is published on the occasion of the exhibition...organized by The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. America's first modern art museum." Two very faint erasure marks on title page, very minor soiling to edges of boards. Dust jacket has light rubbing, light wrinkling along top edge. NF/VG
