1 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." 265 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w illustrations, tables. "(P)rovides the first comprehensive history of the agricultural development of the Oregon Country. Based on extensive research in primary source materials including Hudson's Bay Company documents, missionary records, and military and private papers, (this book) traces the crucial transition of the Pacific Northwest from a fur-trading outpost to an agricultural settlement - a process which also saw the shift from British to American jurisdiction in the area. Gibson explores the reasons for the development of farming, describes the localities where farming took place, and discusses the degree of its success or failure, placing particular emphasis on geographical factors such as terrain, climate, and soil type. The statistical material he has compiled adds a quantitative dimension to his findings and presents important new information about the fur trade west of the Rockies." TALES OF FRESH-WATER FISHING., Grey, Zane.
6 Grey, Zane. TALES OF FRESH-WATER FISHING.
A.S. Barnes, South Brunswick, 1971, reprint.
277 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0498077896 "(This book) was first published in 1928, and has now been reprinted in a new format. With the flick of his rod and a twist of his pen, this well-known sportsman-novelist takes you with him on his trips through inland waters. From Pennsylvania to Oregon, from the calm waters of the Delware to the rushing torrents of the Klamath River, Mr. Grey casts and strikes his way. Salmon, black bass, and steelhead trout come tumbling to his line, though none too easily. There are many disappointments and many battles lost. The author tells stories of his fishing adventures with excitement and zeal. His vivid descriptions of the places he fished and the people he fished with are filled with enthusiasm. You'll learn about his techniques for outwitting the piscatorial species and the variety of baits he experimented with. You'll read about the many types of reels and rods, and those that he used. Come with Zane Grey as he takes you to the Rogue River, the most beautiful stream in Oregon, and the coldest, deepest, and swiftest he ever fished. Read about Ken, a fellow fisherman, who followed his catch down Rocky Riffle, forgetting about the deep channel below. Feel the author's anxiety as he battles with a Chinook salmon on the line. The long tug gave him aching arms and cramped hands, but he won - a prize 57-pound beauty. The 100 illustrations, many of them full-page photographs taken by the author, give you an even fuller opportunity of following every joyous tug of the line." Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802022707 / 9780802022707 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
342 pp, 10 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1898 a group of scientists, working without pay, often under hazardous conditions with only the most primitive equipment, began a systematic study of the fishes of Canada's inland and marine waters. The team operated under the aegis of a board of management which was later to evolve into the Fisheries Research Board, a scientific organization that has placed Candada among the world's leaders in fishery knowledge. This history of the Fisheries Research Board examines the aims and achievements of its research, its attempts to deal with the often conflicting demands of pure and applied science, and its confrontations with a frequently uncomprehending and dissatisfied government. The people who shaped and sustained the organization figure prominently in the account. In-depth taped interviews with senior members and employees, as well as the Annual Reports and other publications of the Department of Fisheries, have enabled (the author) to produce a rich history of a remarkable scientific organization." Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1957 Hard Cover Good+ Good- Maps by C.C.J. Bond.
277 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers, frontispiece, maps. "The Journal of Daniel Williams Harmon is one of the great basic documents of the fur trade and of Canadian exploration. In early corrupt versions it was printed several times but of recent years has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Here for the first time is the authentic text meticulously edited by a foremost authority on Canadiana. The journal begins on April 29, 1800, when Harmon shortly after his twenty-first birthday, 'under an engagement to the North West Coy.' left Lachine for the West in one of thirty canoes, all heavily laden with supplies and bound for the Company's central rendezvous and depot at Grand Portage on Lake Superior It ends on August 18, 1819, at Fort William with the entry: 'I have at length arrived at head quarters. In coming from New Caledonia to this place, which is a distance of at least three thousand miles, nothing uncommon has occurred. A few days hence, I shall leave this place to proceed to Canada. As I have already described the country between this, and Montreal, I shall here conclude my Journal.' Between these two entries are the observations of a man with a sharp and sympathetic eye and a gift for succinct description. His journal is a lively, often exciting, always informative, record of life in the wilderness." 192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "When the hated factor caught Mata the tinker at the salmon poaching he planned a terrible punishment for him. And it was on the night of Mata's ordeal in the midst of a fearful thunderstorm that Calum Og discovered how the mysterious Cave of Gold had been given its name. But the thunderstorm was the start of a blight upon the little crofting township - week after week of rain and mist, the crops failing for want of sun. And then the Stranger arrived, bringing with him sunshine and fresh hope. On the same day the factor fell from his horse, and lay unconscious, unable to prevent the Stranger from leading the boys in the building of a great fish-trap. But when the herring shoals came up the loch, and the trap was filled with fish, the men turned against the Stranger and drove him from the township; and the seemingly endless sunshine turned to torrential rain. And still the Cave remained a mystery to Calum Og until the night of the flood - the night of the 13th of October 1877, when he learned the secret of that Cave of Gold....What really happened to Mata the tinker? Was it mere chance that the factor fell from his horse the day the Stranger came ashore? Who is the Stranger? Set in the Isle of Skye in the harsh 1870s, (this book) will be enjoyed by everyone with a sense of history and a taste for the unusual." 326 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "(B)egins with a thorough re-evaluation of the RCN's role in the decisive Allied Atlantic victory over the U-boats in 1943. It presents some startling new conclusions about why the Canadians were marginalized in this the greatest of all anti-submarine offensives. Most studies of the Atlantic war end at this point, but 1943 is just the prologue to Milner's new book. Historians have ignored anti-submarine warfare in1944-5 because it was highly technical, undramatic and of no consequence to the outcome of the war itself. But the war against the U-boat was unrelenting. Schnorkels, improved batteries, radar detectors, and complex inshore water conditions made it difficult to find and sink late-war U-boats. By 1944 the Germans were building new, high-speed true submarines, against which the Allies had not effective countermeasures. This book is the story of how the RCN tackled these elusive enemies, how it fought to master the basics of modern anti-submarine warfare, and how its efforts fit into the larger Allied campaign." THE WAR FOR THE UNION. VOLUME IV: THE ORGANIZED WAR TO VICTORY, 1864-1865., Nevins, Allan.
20 Nevins, Allan. THE WAR FOR THE UNION. VOLUME IV: THE ORGANIZED WAR TO VICTORY, 1864-1865.
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1971, book club reprint.
448 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here we have the story of th slow and sometimes agaonizing progress of the Union armies to victory. Grant and Sherman and Lincoln dominate.
