"The second battle of Ypres provided the First Canadian Division with its baptism of fire, and it could not have been worse. They were holding a salient, jutting out so that they were targets from three sides. The Germans, for the first time ever, used chlorine gas, which turned the Canadians' bayonets green and destroyed their lungs. Then they discovered that in combat conditions their R oss rifles jammed, as the waves of Germans hit their trenches...At the end John McCrae looked across the battleground where so many hundreds of his countrymen had fallen, and wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. Back in Canada, the war began in earnest t h e day the casualty lists were posted. 9 Ivelaw-Chapman, John. THE RIDDLES OF WIPERS: AN APPRECIATION OF "THE WIPERS TIMES", A JOURNAL OF THE TRENCHES.
London Leo Cooper 1997 0850524946 / 9780850524949 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Near Fine
163 pp, small 4to (10 15/16" H). Profusely illustrated with photographs, reproductions. " 'The Wipers Times' was the 'Private Eye' of the Ypres Salient during World War One. Edited, while under bombardment, by a battalion commander in the Sherwood Foresters, written by soldiers actually in the trenches and distributed by ration-wagon and ammunition-mule, the paper bears vivid witness to the shocking realities of trench warfare. Yet for all the occasional horror of its content 'The Wipers Times' was a gentle, humour-filled and satirical paper which, once its codes are cracked and its riddles solved, tells an interested reader much about the characters and personalities of the men in the British Army of the First World War. Interpretation of regular features such as the bogus music-hall advertisements that feature in every issue, columns like 'Answers to our Many Correspondents' and 'Things We Want to Know' and careful study of some of the remarkable poetry published in the paper explain to readers what it was like to be there. The mud, the gas, the shells; the fear, the courage, the humour and the bitterness; much is revealed about these and many other things in this remarkable book that unravels the eighty-year-old Riddles of Wipers." Small soiling line on top of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

THE SOMME BATTLEFIELDS: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE FROM CRECY TO THE TWO WORLD WARS., Middlebrook, Martin & Middlebrook, Mary.
15 Middlebrook, Martin & Middlebrook, Mary. THE SOMME BATTLEFIELDS: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE FROM CRECY TO THE TWO WORLD WARS.
Viking, London, 1991.
385 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0670830836 Map endpapers. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The French department of the Somme has seen many battles. The Romans were there. In 1066 William the Conquerer set out from a port on the Somme coast to invade England. The French and British fought at Crecy in 1346, and Henry V's army marched through the area on its way to Agincourt in 1415. The Prussians came in 1870. The two World Wars swept back and f o r t h a c ross the Somme. In the First World War the Somme was particularly tragic for the British. There were three great battles, and it was always the men of the British Empire who were most closely involved and suffered the greatest losse s. Ap pr ox i ma te ly half of the 400,000 soldiers who died on the Somme in 1914-18 were British. There are 242 British cemeteries, and the bodies of 50,000 British soldiers who were never found still lie under the Somme fields....(this book) set s o u t t o d esc ri be eve ry place on theSomme where there is a military cemetery, a memorial, a preserved trench, a crater or other reminder of battle, a chateau in which a general had his headquarters, not just from the First World War but from the ea rlie st t race of ol d ba ttles until the day in 1944 when Allied forces advancing from Normandy swept the Germans out of the Somme. Martin Middlebrook has combined the experience of twenty years of writing military history in writing the text . Mary has b een m ainl y re spons ible for the photographs, diagrams and the thirty maps that will help the visitor to find more than 500 places on the Somme and on the routes from the Channel ports and the Channel Tunnel. The result is an or igina l, deta iled w ork wi th an unri valled sureness of touch. It is a history book as well as a guide because each section is introduced with its background; it is 'history on the ground'." "On 31 July 1917 Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig finally put into action his long cherished scheme for a British attack out of the Ypres Salient to clear the Belgian coast and hammer the German Army into submission. Any real chance of success was washed away by relentless rain throughout August. Although advances made during the drier weather of September and early October promised much, the return of the rains as winter approached meant that the final weeks of the battle were unmitigated in their misery. The British troops eked out their existence in squalid, water-filled shell holes and their artillery were helpless to provide the close support they needed. At last, against all the odds the Canadian Corps finally managed to take Passchedaele on 6 November, but clearly the end had been reached and the battle was called off. This new account of one of the First World War's defining episodes is firmly founded on the personal experiences of those who took part. As in their previous books, (the authors) intimately bind into their underlying history the graphic and intensely moving words of the gunners, the airmen, the signallers and, above all, the infantry who learned at first hand the nature of the Ypres Salient in 1917. Shouting above the din of battle, they give voice to the vanished legions of men who fought and died at Passchendaele." Slight cigarette odor, slight browning to edges of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small glue mark on rear board. Dust hacket has light edge wrinkling - a little more at top edge, two tiny color stains on inside surface, very light rubbing and soiling.
