STORMS OF CONTROVERSY: THE SECRET AVRO ARROW FILES REVEALED. FOURTH EDITION., Campagna, Palmiro. Foreword by Major-General (Retired) Richard Rohmer.
2 Campagna, Palmiro. Foreword by Major-General (Retired) Richard Rohmer. STORMS OF CONTROVERSY: THE SECRET AVRO ARROW FILES REVEALED. FOURTH EDITION.
Dundurn, Toronto, 2010, 4th edition, 1st printing.
284 pp, large 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 9781554886982 B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all t h e p r o totypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-releas ed d o cu me nt s, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-t o-d ate o n t he CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING., Hoff, Benjamin.
5 Hoff, Benjamin. THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING.
Weatherhill, New York, (1981), Ist edition.
86 pp, oblong 16mo (6 1/4" H x 9 1/8" D), hard cover (blue cloth with silver lettering on spine) in dust jacket. 16 color photographs. "These new and extremely creative versions (of the Tao Te Ching) by Benjamin Hoff, accompanied by an introduction to the basics of Taoist philosophy, bring the words of the sage to life once again. The Tao Te Ching, or Tao Virture Classic, concerns the working of Tao, the way or path to life in harmony with natural laws. The Tao Te Ching cautions us to seek wisdom rather than knowledge: 'Along the way to knowledge, many things are accumulated. Along the way to wisdom, many things are discarded'. In just this manner, Benjamin Hoff has succeeded in dispersing the mysteries surrounding this ancient text and in reducing the Taoist philosophy to a straightforward message, ever intriguing but no longer elusive. Such basic principles of Taoism as the uncarved block, the source, and the wu wei are given lucid definition. And in further accordance with the Taoist belief that words are an insufficient vehicle for conveying the meaning of Tao, sixteen color photographs are juxtaposed to selected passages, reflecting their essential truth..." While, across the vast sea, bloody war shattered a peace that had flourished for two thousand years in the doomed kingdom of Atlantis. It is the remarkable adventure of Charis - the courageous princess from Atlantis who escapes the terrible devastation of her land - and of the fabled seer and druid prince Taliesin, singer at the dawn of the age. A story of an incomparable love that joins two astonishing worlds amid the fires of chaos, and spawns the miracles of Merlin - and Arthur the king!". 2. Merlin - 447 pp, 1990, 4th printing, ISBN 0380708892 - "He was born to greatness, the son of a druid bard and a princess of lost Atlantis. A trained warrior, blessed with the gifts of prophecy and song, he grew to manhood in a Britain abandoned by its Roman conquerors - a land ravaged by the brutual greed of petty chieftains and barbarian invaders. Respected, feared and hated by many, he was to have a higher destiny: to prepare the way for the momentous event that would unite the Island of the Mighty - the coming of Arthur Pendragon, Lord of the Kingdom of Summer." 3. Arthur - 446 pp, 1990, 2nd printing, ISBN 0380708906 - "They called him unfit to rule - a lowborn, callow boy, Uther's bastard. But his coming had been foretold in the songs of the bard Taliesin. He had learned powerful secrets at the knee of the mysical sage Merlin. He was Arthur, Pendragon of the Island of the Mighty - who would rise to legendary greatness in a Britain torn by violence, greed, and war - who would usher in a glorious reign of peace and prosperity - and who would fall at the treacherous hands of the one he loved more than life." 4. Pendragon - 436 pp, 1995, 4th printing, ISBN 0380717573 - "Arthur is King - but darkest evil has descended upon Britain's shores in many guises. Fragile alliances fray and tear, threatening all the noble liege has won with this wisdom and his blood. In this black time of plague and pestilence, Arthur's most trusted counselor Myrddin - the warrior, bard, and kingmaker whom legend will name Merlin - is himself to be tested on a mystical journey through his own extraordinary past. So Arthur must stand alone against a great and terrible adversary. For only thus can he truly win immortality - and the name he will treasure above all others: Pendragon." 5. Grail - 385 pp, 1998, 4th printing, ISBN 0380781042 - "Drought, plague, and war have left the Isle of the Mighty battered and its heart, the beloved Arthur, grievously injured - until a secret relic is brought before the dying King; a Holy Grail that heals his wounds and restores his vigor. But soon evil enters the royal court in the guise of a beautiful maiden; a soulless, malevolent force capable of seducing the King's loyal champion, confounding the sage whom some call Merlin, and carrying the sacred Grail - and Arthur's adored Queen - off into the dark unknown. And now Arthur faces the greatest challenge of his sovereignty: a quest of recovery that must lead the noble liege through realms of magic and the undead, on a trail that winds inexorably toward a grim confrontation with his most foul nemesis - and his destiny." 8 Smith, Julie Dean. Cover art by Michael Herring. CAITHAN CRUSADE QUARTET. 1. CALL OF MADNESS. MISSION OF MAGIC. 3. SAGE OF SARE. 4. THE WIZARD KING. 4 VOLUME SET.
Del Rey, New York, (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994), Ist editions.
311 pp, 324 pp, 339 pp, 337 pp, - mass market paperbacks - 4 volumes. "Magic had ravaged Caithe since ancient times, striking unpredictably and creating men and women with powers they could neither understand nor control. Only the ritual slaughter of such mad wizards held the land safe from fire and destruction. Yet, even in Caithe, some magic was tolerated by the Church and the people, though grudgingly. Long before, the King had been given such powers in a secret, forbidden ritual by a renegade wizard. And so far, his use of them had been beneficial to the kingdom. But how long could he continue, before the powers he had gained turned upon him, to strike him with the horrors of madness? Athaya Trelane was not thinking of that, however, as she sat in the dingy tavern. Her thoughts were of herself. For already the first signs of the dread powers were manifesting in her! They were a gift that could not be denied - nor could the awful price!" Interiors - pages browning very lightly, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks, Exteriors - very light edge wear, faint creases on spines of books 1, 2 & 4. VG

Doubleday, Doran, Garden City, New York, 1930.
208 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Perhaps no man was ever greater or weaker than Sir Francis Bacon. On the one hand he was a brilliant writer, an original thinker, a stateman, a sage, philosopher, and scholar who sought to catalo gue all the knowledge on the earth; while on the other hand, he was a sychophant, a treacherous friend; a cringing enemy, a time-serving opportunist, luxurious, vain, mercenary, a spendthrift, and if not a thief then a man inexcusably carel e s s i n m o ney matters. Always he was trying to serve two masters; whether they were the Earl of Essex and his own cousin, Lord Robert Cecil, the Earl's chief political foe; or Essex and the Queen....a fascinating and entirely modern biography o f th e m an wh o won the ignominy and contumely of his contemporaries and immortal fame in future generations." KALILA AND DIMNA: SELECTED FABLES OF BIDPAI., Wood, Ramsay. Introduction by Doris Lessing.
11 Wood, Ramsay. Introduction by Doris Lessing. KALILA AND DIMNA: SELECTED FABLES OF BIDPAI.
New York Alfred A. Knopf 1980 0394506936 / 9780394506937 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Margaret Kilrenny.
263 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Ramsay Wood here restores to our world a major, self-contained section of the 'Tales of Bidpai' - the charming-quirky, humorous cycle of fables which originally appeared in Sanskrit nearly 1,700 years ago. It is difficult to trace their earliest beginnings, but incidents from the tales can be identified in sculpture near Buddhist shrines built before 200 B.C., and all our beast fables from Aesop to La Fontaine to Uncle Remus suggest a debt to them. Taken together, the tales ostensibly constitute a handbook for rulers, illustrating and explaining a series of admonitions on how to run a kingdom, on the conduct proper for a king, on the use of spies, on the legal system, on how to create a village, etc., etc. But in their slyly profound grasp of human nature at its best - and, more often, at its worst - they are clearly meant as good counsel for all of us. At (its heart) is the incorruptible sage Bidpai, sugar-coating the advice he is offering his king, Dabschelim, with these stories of two jackals, the cunning brothers Kalila and Dimna. And within the stories, the jackals themselves tell stories (all living creatures need instruction!). Here we meet an old crow, a miserly wolf, iron-eating mice, apes, busybody birds, a turtle, a cormorant, a bedbug, a flea - . As layer upon layer of tales unfolds, we are exposed to animals and men who are wise or foolish, naive, greedy, impatient, and wrongheaded in endlessly different ways - characters who have all the flaws (and even a few of the virtues) of human nature, and whose adventures and fates amuse as they illumine the mystery of human life. (Quotes from, among others,) Cicero, Gilgamesh, Spenser, Freud, Dryden, Mark Twain and J.D. Salinger (are used to embellish this adaptation)." Gift inscription in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny edge tear/chips, two corner creases on front flap.
