3 Anderes, Fred & Agranoff, Ann. ICE PALACES.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1983 0771598572 / 9780771598579 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
132 pp, oblong (9 1/8" H x 10 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, repro-ductions, architectural drawings. "The magical buildings illustrated in this pioneer study of a virtually unknown architectural phenomenon were truly built of ice, and they were said to shimmer with color and fire reminiscent of sapphire, topaz, and opal. In style they recalled medieval castles, Gothic cathed-rals, Russian palaces, and Art Deco fantasies. Many were huge, reaching as high as a 14 -story building and extending as long as a football field, but, of course, there's no physical trace of them. Nevertheless, the authors have discovered dozens of historic photographs, lithographs, postcards, paintings, and drawings of these fabulous but ephemeral constructions, as well as mementoes of the winter activities and sports surrounding their creation. (They) relate the history of ice castle building and examine about thirty in detail. This type of architectural tour de fource had its beginning in 18th-century Russia, when the eccentric Empress Anna Ivanova built an icy honeymoon cottage for an out-of-favor prince. In North America, ice palaces were created as centrepieces for the winter carnivals that sprang up in northern cities in the late 19th century. Between 1883 and 1942, grand castles were built of blocks of ice in the Canadian cities of Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa, and also in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Leadville, Colorado. Today the leading centers for construction in ice and snow are at the annual winter festivals held in Quebec, Canada, and Sapporo, Japan. (T)he authors - both architects - examine the theory and practice of building with ice (which under certain conditions has the structural properties of concrete), both for practical and fantastic purposes." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket has light rubbing - mainly on front panel, minor wrinkling at top of spine.

But it finds a city abandoned by its inhabitants - save only the men who emerge to fan the flames as incediary fuzes hidden throughout the empty buildings of Moscow set the city alight. For three days Moscow burns, while looters dodge the fires to plunder and pillage. BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
8 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
9 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. 16 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave. Dust jacket art by Rex Flood. HURRICANE AT WAR.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1974, first edition.
160 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711005648 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The Hawker Hurricane has a permanent niche in the annals of military aviation history as the world's first operational eight-gun monoplane fighter and the RAF's first front-line fighter to achieve more than 300mph in level flight. But it has received little credit for its subsequent lion's share of the defence of the United Kingdom during the 1940 Battle of Britain, and its later serv ice in a score of fighting roles across every theatre of operations during the 1939-45 war. In this book the author sets out to redress this omission in due recognition of the Hurricane's magnificent record. With a collation of authentic, firs t - h a nd impressions and experiences by the men who flew and serviced the Hurricane, backed by a unique collection of specially selected photographs, many from private sources, he has recreated the genuine atmosphere of Hurricane operations. This a ma lg am of text and photographs traces the story of the Hurricane and its crews from the first prototype and pre-1939 service to France 1940; through the Battle of Britain; in the frozen wastes of North Russia; over beleagured Malta; across Sic ily an d G ree ce and as far afield as the Burmese jungle. There are pilots' accounts of low-level bombing sorties covering the disastrous Dieppe invasion, a personal story by the only fighter pilot of World War II to be awarded the Victoria Cross , an d pi ctor ial sections illustrating the armament, markings and, especially, the men who knew the Hurricane best - the crews." 600 pp, 4to (11 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840530898 "World War II was the most intensively photographed conflict in history. Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. The scenes they captured of mass suffering and individual heroism, of atrocious cruelty and humanitarianism against the odds, of hate and comradeship, misery and hope, remain undiminished in t heir intensity and constitute a vital record of an extraordinary period. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1968.
251 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps. "The attempts by the Western powers to intervene in Russia after the Bolshevik coup d'etat of 1917, and the abortive attempt of the Red Army to destroy Poland, are subjects which have be en badly neglected by historians. John Bradley has consulted French and British archives for the first time, and his book provides a wealth of completely new material on the subject. As a result of this new research many hitherto accepte d i d e a s o f the intervention are challenged and a clearer perspective is given to this period of history. The most obscure phase of the intervention, November 1917 to August 1918, is thoroughly dealt with, and the place of Japan and the Czec ho s lo va k Co rp s i n the military strategy of the Allies is examined.
