A very Victorian history text for children. Excerpt: "The conduct of Anne Bol eyn was not very amiable, for in her anxiety to wear the crown, she had been wholly regardless of the feelings of the injured queen, whose life, shortened by grief, terminated soon afterwards; but she was severely punished for her selfish a m b i t i o n ; for she had not been the wife of the capricious monarch more than three years, when he fell in love with another lady, and speedily removed all impediments to a third marriage, by procuring witnesses to accuse his wife of treason, a nd s he w as b eh ea d ed after a short imprisonment in the Tower. This unfortunate lady left an infant daughter, who became afterwards Queen Elizabeth. The unfeeling king went out hunting on the day of Anne Boleyn's execution, and the next mor nin g h e m arr ied La dy Jan e Seymour, who died the following year, leaving an infant son, who reigned after his father's death, under the title of Edward the Sixth." SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE., Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland.
6 Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland. SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE.
New York Barnes & Noble. 1993 156619086X / 9781566190862 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
392 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "For this witty account of the European nobility, (the author) has taken as his inspiration that most illustrious of social registers: the 'Almanch de Gotha', first published in 1764 and still on the shelves of all who look back with nostalgia upon 'that happy period - when the monarchic principle was so firmly anchored in people's minds that it seemed impossible for a country to exist unless there was a sovereign, emperor, king, prince, or grand duke at its head'. The author, himself a scion of a princely family, has inherited a clear perspective of the main thoroughfares of history, and a great knowledge of its byways. He approaches his subject with a light touch, even at times with irreverence - for, in his own words: 'The secrets of the Gotha, whispered to me by the ghosts of long-dead chamberlains, evoke the spirit on an age whose frivolities alone have survived. The inheritance of the duchies of Schleswig or Holstein no longer vexes the world at large; but the fate of the unfortunate Electress of Hanover, shut up for thirty years by her husband for having shown too much enthusiasm for the handsome Koenigsmark, still moves us; and the madness of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the indecorous loves of Queen Isabella of Spain, or the eccentricities of Caroline, Princess of Wales, are more interesting today than the War of the Roses, the continence of Scipio or the virtues of Blanche of Castile. It is by their weaknesses that men are human, and kings cannot escape being men. But though their weaknesses may be the cause of their undoing, it is their humanity that most engages our sympathy today. Bad examples are the easiest to follow ; they are also the most amusing to relate." Dust jacket has slight fading to color and lettering on spine, minor edge wrinkling and minor browning on inside top edge.

ARCHITECTONICS OF IMITATION IN SPENSER, DANIEL, AND DRAYTON., Galbraith, David.
8 Galbraith, David. ARCHITECTONICS OF IMITATION IN SPENSER, DANIEL, AND DRAYTON.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 2000, first edition.
229 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802044514 B&w illustrations. "This ground-breaking study explores the treatment of the boundaries between poetry and history in three epic literary works: Spenser's 'Faerie Queene', S amuel Daniel's 'Civil Wars', and Michael Drayton's 'Poly-Olbion'. David Galbraith argues that each of the three national poems enters into a dialogue with classical and more contemporary predecessors and that this relationship has profound i m p l i c a t ions for understanding the English Renaissance. He explores the importance for each poem of various aspects of the relationships between England and Rome and the significance of the recurring spatial metaphors by which the territor i es o f po et ry a nd history are constituted, negotiated, and traversed. By presenting historically and theoretically inflected readings of the poems, Galbraith gives new interpretation to important problems of allegory and poetic imitation." Margaret Hensel, whose photographs and articles on garden design have appeared in 'Horticulture' and many other magazine s , h as analyzed the aesthetic and horticultural elements of ten representative cottage gardens - eight in England and two in the United States (including Tasha Tudor's at Corgi Cottage in Vermont). Her spectacular photographs render the look and a tm o sp here of these gardens, while her text focuses on easily grown, readily available plants that are adaptable to a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions. In the back of the book may be found specific horticultural information on a wi de var ie ty of cottage garden plants commonly available in the United States, glossaries of Latin and common names, a list of sources for old rose varieties, and a detailed index. The gardens in this beautiful book are not those of the great estat es of E ngl and , manicured by staffs of professional gardeners. London Brockhampton 1999 1860199976 / 9781860199974 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
223 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, genealogical table. "The vicious wars between the English noble houses of York and Lancaster marked the end of medieval England and the birth of the Renaissance. The end of that thirty-year period of strife and bloodshed, which succeeding generations have called the Wars of the Roses, saw the collapse of the great Plantagenet dynasty, rulers of all England and much of France for over three hundred years, and the rise of the Tudors, destined to dominate English political life during the next century, following the triumph of Henry Tudor over Richard III at Bosworth Field. Robin Neillands tells this tale in clear and uncomplicated language, unravelling a fascinating and complex story to bring this period in England's history vividly to life. He also investigates the mysteries concerning the sudden marriage of Edward IV, the seizure of Edward's throne by his brother Richard of Gloucester and the murder of Richard's nephews, the Princes in the Tower."

"It originated with an entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to succeed in the new world. It grew from an innate love of roses, their beauty, their scent and their challenge. It was tempered with a serendipitous meeting of two different business approaches. It forged the largest and most successful cut flower operation of its time. It expanded over the course of one hundred years from a solitary greenhouse to over forty acres under glass and then, within a span of ten years, it disappeared without a trace. It was the Dale Estate. (This) is a story of a family, of pride and ambition, of soaring dreams and unbridled success, and of security and stability for Brampton, a small Ontario town that grew to be recognized internationally as 'The Flower Town of Canada'. It is the story of the rise and fall of the company known as the Dale Estates, the third largest greenhouse operation in the world, a company that survived two world wars, a flue pandemic and the Great Depression, but could not withstand the crushing wheel of progress and the changing economy." "Battlefields are the untold story of British archaeology. As the sites of events which too k place over hours rather than years, they have long been considered lacking in archaeological riches. However, recent pioneering work has shown that battlefields can provide dramatic revelations about the battle's course once the archaeol o g i s t s g e t digging beneath the surface. This is where Tony Pollard and Neil Oliver step in. As battlefield archaeologists they are in a unique position to challenge both the historical veiwpoint and contemporary eyewitness accounts. In (t hi s bo ok , th e y) v isit the sites of six major British battles (Shrewsbury, Barnet, Flodden, Newark, Culloden and the Firth of Forth) and carry out a full archaeological investigation of each. Each chapter is a fully framed investigation and follows an episode of the t elev isi on ser ies .
