3 Axelrod, Alan, commentary. Arrangements by Dan Fox. SONGS OF THE WILD WEST.
New York Metropolitan Musem of Art / Simon & Schuster 1991 0671747754 / 9780671747756 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
128 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 10 3/4" D). Decorated endpapers, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." It was a sweet day and a bitter one for millions of people whose lives had been forever changed. This day, and long days of war that led to it, are brought to life in (this book). More than 300 Canadians tell their own stories of the Second World War - stories of cour a g e , sacrifice, tragedy, and glory. It was one of the most trying times in Canadian history, and these ordinary men and women rose to the extraordinary challenge laid before them. Their stories are celebrated here, woven into a compelling narra ti ve o f the Canadian wartime experience, bringing the past vividly to life. Here are tales from noted war correspondents Scott Young and Matthew Halton; stories of home-front rationing, shortages and endless bureaucracy; horrific memories of Buc hen wal d - and Canadian internment camps; hair-raising bomber command stories; revelations of the repatriation controversy; and hilarious accounts of wartime entertainers, including Wayne and Shuster and the crew of 'Meet The Navy'." 8 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

Arrow, (London, 1989).
253 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs. "They were feared, hated and respected as one of the premier divisions of the Waffen SS, wearing the sinister silver insignia of the Death's Head on the collar of their black uniforms, to signify 'SS Totenkopf Division'. One of the most powerful and destructive military forces in history, many in its ranks began their training not in military academies but as concentration camp guards. Their brutal architect was Alsatian-born former p s y c h i a t r ic-clinic inmate Theodor Eike, who rose to become the ruthless, indomitable commander of the 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf. In the early days of the war in Russia, the Division covered itself with glory for Hitler as a cruel, f ea rl es s te ch ni ci an of war. In defeat, however, the men of Totenkopf crashed to shame and ignominy - leaving behind a legacy of loathing unique in the annals of the battlefield." 13 Casswell, J.D., Q.C. Foreword By Lord Oaksey. A LANCE FOR LIBERTY
London George G. Harrap 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
325 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "His Honour J.D. Casswell, Q.C., has a unique record as an advocate: he has defended about forty men and women in this country (England) charged with murder, yet only five hanged. The rest were acquitted or their offence was reduced to a lesser charge. In these pages Casswell tells the behind-the-scenes story of some of the most celebrated murder trials in recent times. Among his clients were George Stoner, the 18-year-old chauffeur charged with the Bournemouth Villa Madeira Murder; Reginal Woolmington, the West Country farm labourer, who was the only man ever cleared of a murder charge by the House of Lords; sex-maniac Neville Heath; Mrs Cornock, the Bristol housewife accused of murdering her husband in his bath. Now that he has finally retired, Casswell for the first time gives his own account of these and other fascinating cases. But his book is not merely an eminent lawyer's professional reminiscences. It is a full autobiography, telling how the son of a Wimbledon businessman, with no relatives in the law, or other family advantages, rose to the heights of success in the most gruelling of professions." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has kight wrinkling at top of spine, very light edge wear, very tiny edge tear, slight browning at top of flaps, soiling on rear panel.

But for Garrett, a human detective in a world of gnomes, tracking down the woman to whom his dead pal Denny left a fortune in silver was no slight task. Denny's family wanted to hang onto the treasure - especially sister Rose, with a body hot enough to stop Garrett in his tracks, but a heart colder than the metal he was packing. And suddenly vampires, centaurs, and other nasty creatures are in the way, and Garrett would much rather be at home with a bottle of beer than in the wilds with fangs in his neck. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
17 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
Coward-McCann, New York, 1963, first American edition.
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, c ourtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brillian t c o m e d i e s of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new an d c om pl ic at ed d ev ices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of for ge ry an d e mbe zzl eme nt. H e became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mist res s, Mada me d u Ba rry. Th e ne xt K ing, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late K ing whi ch we re of expl osive impo rtanc e, in volved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais al lied him self w ith th e caus e of t he Ame rican coloni es; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, Beaumarchais organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, h is pl ay 'T he Barb er of S eville' had be en accl aimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the b an was reluc tantly l ifted, a ll Paris fought to see i t. Wh en the R evolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a fr iend's house. Later he was arre sted, rel eased th rough inf luence of a woma n, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." "(S)howcases twenty beguiling tales for the child-that-was and the adult-that-is, penned by twenty of the most creative artists in contemporary American literature. Here dissected are the darker anatomies of the timeless, seemingly simple stories we have long loved. Here wonder and truth have serious bite. A lovelorn prince seeking his father's blessing concocts a fantastic tale of a witch, a tower, and lustrous long hair - A pair of accursed red boots punishes a beautiful dancer for her pride - A troll-killing, princess-rescuing warrior is compelled to consider events from his adversaries' point of view - In a blistering tell-all memoir, Goldilocks reveals the sordid truth about her brutal foster parent, Papa Bear - . Rich, surprising, funny, exotic, and unsettling, these twenty new yarns and poems offer exceptional new treasures - as they brilliantly reveal lusts and jealousies, foibles, hatreds, and dangerous obsessions, the things that slyly lurk in the midnight interior of oft-told tales."
