1 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS., Crowlesmith, J., Rev.
4 Crowlesmith, J., Rev. STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS.
London Aldine Hard Cover Good Fair H.S. Greig.
172 pp, 7 1/2" H. Red boards with black lettering/illustration on spine and front board. Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. No date, but Xmas greetings on free front endpaper dated 1936. "The stories that follow are taken from Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur', the great collection of romances about King Arthur which was written in the fifteenth century, and printed first of all by Caxton. Scholars say that Arthur was a British hero, one of the leaders of the Britons against the English invaders in the sixth century. In course of time legends centred round his name in the memory of the defeated race. To the original stories the Middle Ages added others, some of which belonged to later heroes, and, finally, these were combined with various legends of the Christian Church about the finding of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ is said to have drunk at the Last Supper with His disciples. Thus we get the beautiful cycle of romances which shines in the pages of Malory's great book. This version has been written for younger children. As far as possible the old-world style of Malory's narrative has been preserved, while the stories chosen are those which seem to present a message to youth." 11 Hopkins, Andrea. THE BOOK OF GUINEVERE, LEGENDARY QUEEN OF CAMELOT.
Prospero 1998 0886653584 / 9780886653583 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
96 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and colour reproductions, decorations. "The enigma of Guinevere, a beautiful and courageous queen or a disgraced adulteress, has received less attention than the achievements of King Arthur, the adventures of noble Sir Lancelot and other knights, the magic of Merlin, or the sorcery of Morgan Le Fay. A key figure in the life of Camelot, this remarkable woman is seen variously as a scholar, seductress, warrior and gentle beauty by the countless artists and writers who have depicted her. Who, then, was Guinevere? (This) is an elegant anthology of poetry and prose, literature and legend, with commentary by Arthurian scholar Andrea Hopkins, accompanied by beautiful illustrations from medieval manuscript illumination to pre-Raphaelite masterpieces. An enlightening introduction describes the contradictory traditions of Celtic oral sources and the blending of these strands by medieval writers into the complex legend we know know. Guinevere's roles - as educated scribe to the court, hapless victim of circumstances, wise counsellor, devoted wife of King Arthur, and lover of Sir Lancelot - are explored through writings through the centuries by detractors and admirers alike." Very light edge wear, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, light fading to spine color.

190 pp, oblong 8vo (9" H x 11 3/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921254482 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "There has never been another theatre-building boom like the one occasioned by the explosive success of t he movies in the 1910s and 1920s. In Montreal alone, dozens of new theatres were built, not plain shoeboxes like modern cinemas, but huge and ornate halls with great domes glowing on distant ceilings and dizzying decorative schemes on the w a l l s . T hey were dream palaces, where ordinary people (for the mere price of a ticket) could sit amidst splendour and watch great dramas and romances unreel on the silver screen. This is the story of Montreal's movie palaces, as great and or na te a s an y o n the continent, of the businessmen and architects and craftsmen who built them, the masses who flocked to them, of the glory days they knew in their glamorous reign and the hard times they faced with the rise of TV. Dane Lanken spe nt twe nt y y ea rs st udying Montreal's movie palaces, interviewing the people who were there, searching for rare and previously unpublished archival photographs, and commissioning new views - while the theatres still stood - from leading arch itec tur al p hot ogra phe rs B ria n Merrett and Julie Greto. The result is a comprehensive and richly illustrated social, artistic, architectural and corporate history of an exuberant and little known era in Montreal's history." 14 Matthews, John. Foreword by Mildred Leake Day. GAWAIN: KNIGHT OF THE GODDESS. RESTORING AN ARCHETYPE.
Wellingborough Aquarian Press 1990 085030783X / 9780850307832 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
208 pp, 9 1/2" H. "Gawain was once the most important knight at Arthur's court, a shining example of all that was best in chivalry at the time. However, as the popularity of the Arthurian romances grew the character of Gawain diminished, leaving him represented as a villain rather than as Champion of the Goddess. How this transformation came about, and the reasons why, are explored here. In this deeply researched volume (Matthews) examines all the known texts relating to Gawain, beginning with early Celtic references and working through the Latin romances and the vivid stories of the Middle Ages, including the famous 'Morte d'Arthur' of Sir Thomas Malory. From these texts the author has rediscovered the original Gawain - a figure of great mythical, magical and historical importance. Gawain's many adventures and several identities are studied in detail, providing a completely fresh and exciting appraisal of the texts in question, and this works adds considerably to our understanding of the Arthurian cycle and Gawain's part in it. It also contains a thorough investigation of the actual site of the famous 'Green Chapel' and the first English translation of the fragmentary medieval text 'The Childhood of Gawain'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - migrates into page margins, light remainder mark on bottom of text block, previous owner's bookplate on free front endpaper, very small printing ink stain in margin of page 169. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has some light wrinkling at top edge, very light rubbing and faint line indents on rear panel.

227 pp, 12mo (7" H), red cloth spine with lettering/border in gold, cream paper-covered boards reproducing the illustration from the dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "For this, the second volume in Milestones in Children's Literature, Victor E. Neuburg has written an admirable study of the famous 'penny histories' or chapbooks which formed almost the entire reading matter of the poorer people in eighteenth-century England. At a time when children's literature had a strong religious and didactic basis, these little paperbound books, however crudely produced and illustrated, kept alive traditional tales of romance and adventure, and fed the imagination of young and old alike. Facsimiles of seven of the 'penny histories' are included in the present volume, and there is a detailed bibliography of source material." The chapbooks included in facsimile reproduction are: The History of Guy of Warwick; Fairy Stories; The Interesting Story of the Children in the Wood; An Elegy on the Death and Burial of Cock Robin; A Peep at the Various Nations of the World; Toads and Diamonds; The Rod. Includes a section on chapbooks in America. Tiny mark on verso of free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor edge wear.
