Dundurn, Toronto, 2010, 4th edition, 1st printing.
284 pp, large 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 9781554886982 B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all t h e p r o totypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-releas ed d o cu me nt s, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-t o-d ate o n t he CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." Penrith, Cumbria St. Patrick's Press 1982 095082870X / 9780950828701 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Very Good-
134 pp, 11 7/8" H. Map endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(C)hronicles the significant aeronautical events which took place in the Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway region from 1825 to 1914. The uninformed reader glancing at the topographical map may wonder as to what possible level of pioneering aviation activity could be sustained in a predominantly mountainous region where man is grossly outnumbered by sheep - yet between these years it was to encapsulate almost all aspects of man's aeronautical endeavour, from ballooning, parachuting, gliding, aircraft and airship construction to aero engine production. Cumbria is the birthplace of both British naval and civil marine aviation and for the first time the full exciting story is told aided by many previously unpublished documents and photographs." Small bump at top/bottom of spine and at bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing, a few tiny dents on rear panel/hinge.

TALES OF THE ELDERS OF IRELAND. (ACALLAM NA SENORACH.), Dooley, Ann and Roe, Harry, translated with introduction and notes by.
7 Dooley, Ann and Roe, Harry, translated with introduction and notes by. TALES OF THE ELDERS OF IRELAND. (ACALLAM NA SENORACH.)
Oxford Oxford University Press 1999 0192839187 / 9780192839183 Soft Cover Very Good
245 pp, 7 3/4" H. "This is the first complete translation of the largest literary text surviving from twelfth-century Ireland, and the most comprehensive early collection of Fenian stories and poetry. Three parallel worlds interact in the 'Tales': the contemporary Christian world of Saint Patrick, with his scribes, clerics, occasional angels, and souls rescued from Hell; the earlier pagan world of the ancient, giant Fenians and an array of Irish kings; and the timeless Otherworld, peopled by ever-young, shape-shifting fairies. The 'Tales' dwell in detail on the inhabitants of the Irish Otherworld and provide an extensive account of their music and magic, their internicine wars and their malice toward, and infatuation with, humankind - themes that still feature in the storytelling of present-day Ireland. This excellent new translation is based on existing manuscript sources and is richly annotated, looking at the 'Acallam's' place in Irish tradition and its wider literary impact." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, very light browning to edges of text block, old price label on rear cover.

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
8 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Soft Cover Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

304 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "From Icarus to the threshold of the interplanetary rocket is the span covered (in this book). 12 Granatstein, J.L. CANADA 1957-1967: THE YEARS OF UNCERTAINTY AND INNOVATION. THE CANADIAN CENTENARY SERIES NO. 19.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771035152 / 9780771035159 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Signed by Author
375 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, political cartoons. Signed by author on title page. "In the tenth decade of Canada's confederation, the expansive and unifying post-war boom gave way to rapid change and conflicting choices. These were the years of John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson, years when Canada's culture, economy, and politics took new directions and the foundations of today's political and social realities were laid. Beginning with a survey of the country in 1957, poised to grasp Diefenbaker's grand 'Vision', the author vividly describes how the Progressive Conservative promise won the nation - and later could not be fulfilled. In these critical years Canada joined NORAD and scrapped the Avro Arrow jet fighter; the Diefenbaker Cabinet tore itself apart over the nuclear arms question. At the same time, the economic crisis of the early sixties gave the Liberals a much-needed political weapon as the government faced soaring budget deficits, a declining dollar, and a severe recession. Politics mirrored public feelings in the mid-1960s as governments federal and provincial addressed new kinds of problems. Unification of the armed forces, medicare, and bilingualism in the public services, especially in the context of the growing political and cultural ferment in Quebec, proved divisive as well as innovative." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jackat has very small tear and creases at top of spine - archivally taped, some very light edge wear/wrinkling with one tiny tear archivally taped.

University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, 1989.
544 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0877452652 "(The) story of the men who spent their youth designing and building England's first flying-machines: the men who pioneered the British aircraft industry. Some of their airc raft have achieved immortality - the legendary Pup, Camel, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. But of the men who designed and built them, men like Frederick Handley Page, Tommy Sopwith, George Holt Thomas and Geoffrey de Havilland, perhaps o n l y R o l ls and Royce are still household names. These pioneers of aviation development began to build their empires during Worl;d War I, although several of them crashed during the bleak period that followed. World War II revived their fortun es , as so me ho w they met the challenge of enormously increased production and helped save England from invasion. They tested the early jets and speedily built the first post-war jet airliner. But already they were making errors which would res ult i n b a nkr upt cie s, forced mergers and foreign takeovers. Peter King describes the knight in all their glamour, skill, idiosyncrasy, greed, flair and desire for power. Quotations from previously unpublished papers, from colleagues and cont empo rar ies, a nd f rom cust omers (governments, the British Air Force, commercial airlines) for the first time describe how wilful they could be, as well as how brilliantly enterprising and entertaining." 246 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs. "Both Chadwick and the author lived through the same contemporary events, so this biography of the great Avro designer not only deals with aircraft evolution but reflects the atmosphere of those days. No sooner was one design under way than Roy Chadwick was imagining the next and the next, totalling some two hundred. They range from initial experience with pre-Great War precursors and the world-famous Avro 504 trainer through a sequence of prototypes including ultra-light aeroplanes, powerful fighters and bombers. In particular the Avro 504 with its 20 variants, the twin-engined Anson and the mighty Lancaster were built in huge numbers. In a swift moving story Penrose depicts Chadwick's career through the changing years from the early revelation of flight to his 54th year when he initiated design of the futuristic Delta-Winged Vulcan, ending with his tragic death in the crash of the Avro Tudor II airliner in 1947."
