2 Beal, Bob & Macleod, Rod. PRAIRIE FIRE: THE 1885 NORTH-WEST REBELLION.
Hurtig, Edmonton, (1984).
384 pp, 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0888302622 B&w photos, maps, drawings. "(T)ells us about the Metis, who simply wanted the long-standing boundaries of their river-lot farms respected by the government as Ottawa divided up the land to sell it to homesteaders. It tells about the Indians, whose land had been sold by the government and tradition and self-support destroyed, and who were now literally starving while the government broke its promises or tried to tie them to concessions. It tells us of local government officials, who could not agree among themselves whether the Indians should be treated with discipline or with food. It tells us about the frightened settlers and townspeople, caught between the Indians and Metis they often sympathized with and the government they looked to for support. And it tells about the soldiers, who heroically set out to quell a rebellion, but whose greatest ordeal was the long train journey on which they were beset by freezing cold and extreme shortages of food." 3 Bennett, Ethel Hume. A TREASURE SHIP OF OLD QUEBEC.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1936 First Edition Hard Cover Good Hazel Boswell. Inscribed By Author
266 pp, 8 1/2" H. Blue cloth with black lettering on spine. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. Most of the front panel of the dust jacket has been laid in the front of the book, but the rest is missing. Signed on title page: "Ethel Hume Bennett, / Christmas 1936 / Toronto." "Good story of a group of young people who succeed in solving the mystery of the disappearance of a model ship, a seal, a miniature and a deed -- all keys to the future happiness of one of the group. Perhaps luck is with them to a surprising degree, but, none the less, the following down of clues is well developed and less left to chance than in the average juvenile mystery yarns. The period is today -- the place Quebec and environs, but a great deal of history is made an essential part of the unravelling of the mystery." Kirkus Review. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS., Cokinos, Christopher.
5 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

TALES OF FRESH-WATER FISHING., Grey, Zane.
11 Grey, Zane. TALES OF FRESH-WATER FISHING.
South Brunswick A.S. Barnes 1971 0498077896 / 9780498077890 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Good+
277 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(This book) was first published in 1928, and has now been reprinted in a new format. With the flick of his rod and a twist of his pen, this well-known sportsman-novelist takes you with him on his trips through inland waters. From Pennsylvania to Oregon, from the calm waters of the Delware to the rushing torrents of the Klamath River, Mr. Grey casts and strikes his way. Salmon, black bass, and steelhead trout come tumbling to his line, though none too easily. There are many disappointments and many battles lost. The author tells stories of his fishing adventures with excitement and zeal. His vivid descriptions of the places he fished and the people he fished with are filled with enthusiasm. You'll learn about his techniques for outwitting the piscatorial species and the variety of baits he experimented with. You'll read about the many types of reels and rods, and those that he used. Come with Zane Grey as he takes you to the Rogue River, the most beautiful stream in Oregon, and the coldest, deepest, and swiftest he ever fished. Read about Ken, a fellow fisherman, who followed his catch down Rocky Riffle, forgetting about the deep channel below. Feel the author's anxiety as he battles with a Chinook salmon on the line. The long tug gave him aching arms and cramped hands, but he won - a prize 57-pound beauty. The 100 illustrations, many of them full-page photographs taken by the author, give you an even fuller opportunity of following every joyous tug of the line." Book slightly twisted, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, several very small tears - one with crease, very light browning on spine and flap-folds, light rubbing with light color loss on front panel.

University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, 1989.
544 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0877452652 "(The) story of the men who spent their youth designing and building England's first flying-machines: the men who pioneered the British aircraft industry. Some of their airc raft have achieved immortality - the legendary Pup, Camel, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. But of the men who designed and built them, men like Frederick Handley Page, Tommy Sopwith, George Holt Thomas and Geoffrey de Havilland, perhaps o n l y R o l ls and Royce are still household names. These pioneers of aviation development began to build their empires during Worl;d War I, although several of them crashed during the bleak period that followed. World War II revived their fortun es , as so me ho w they met the challenge of enormously increased production and helped save England from invasion. They tested the early jets and speedily built the first post-war jet airliner. But already they were making errors which would res ult i n b a nkr upt cie s, forced mergers and foreign takeovers. Peter King describes the knight in all their glamour, skill, idiosyncrasy, greed, flair and desire for power. Quotations from previously unpublished papers, from colleagues and cont empo rar ies, a nd f rom cust omers (governments, the British Air Force, commercial airlines) for the first time describe how wilful they could be, as well as how brilliantly enterprising and entertaining." 118 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "The 1960s was a decade of major transition for the National Hockey League. Bitter rivalries were the order of the day, especially between Canada's two teams, as the Leafs and the Canadiens accounted for nine of the decade's Stanley Cup winners. The league doubled in size as new teams in St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Oakland brought hockey to new fans throughout North America. Aging superstars like Maurice 'Rocket' Richard passed the torch to the next generation of stellar players such as Bobby Orr. Hall of Famers like Johnny Bower, Dave Keon, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Terry Sawchuk and Glenn Hall were at their peak. Through it all, innovative action photographer Harold Barkley was rinkside, recording for posterity the greatest moments of hockey in the sixties. To his stunning colour photographs, accomplished hockey writer Mike Leonetti adds intriguing, fact-filled captions and comments. (A) treasure trove for dedicated hockey fans as well as newcomers to the game." Previous owner's place, Christmas date and signature on free front endpaper.
