Quite possibly he still is. MacAskill (1893-1956) was born in St. Peter's on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia and from childhood on, his first and last loves were photography and the sea. He devoted his life to both. His own greatest critic, MacAskill destroyed 99 out of 100 of his negatives, yet left over 6,000 images to posterity. This book is a careful selection from among (those images)." Dust jacket has some very minor edge wrinkling.

191 pp, oblong (9 3/4" H x 11 3/4" D). Map endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "In the spectacular expanse of wind, water, rock and sky that is Georgian Bay, there is only one Cognashene . Historically rich, geographically gorgeous, shaped by colourful characters and events, Cognashene's allure is as powerful today as it was for the first hardy souls to arrive at its scenic shores. (This book) celebrates the uniquely Canadian island community and traces its dramatic journey from its native roots, through its industrial development to its days of pioneer settlement. In these pages you'll meet Champlain and his young protege, Etienne Brule. You'll find out what it took to be a success - or a failure! - in the lumber days. You can settle in for a visit at Longuissa, Whalen's or Blarney Castle, or, if it's Sunday - and you're so inclined - stop by the Church on the Rocks. And you'll discover throughout the breathtaking beauty that has captivated countless artists, including A.Y. Jackson and other members of the Group of Seven. Part historical document, part warm-hearted slice-of-cottage-life, (it) reveals a distinctive and winning personality. It is, quite simply, the essence of Cognashene." Cobalt, Ontario Highway Book Shop 1985 0889543062 / 9780889543065 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Signed by Author
145 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. "Silver Centre was one of Canada's celebrated mining camps. It discovered millions of dollars in silver ore (when silver's price averaged 50 cents an ounce) and probably has as much mineral wealth today in its unexamined Keewatin ground for some future economic development. But most importantly, in terms of Ontario's social history , this Silver Centre story represents the way of life for many of the people living in northern Ontario during the early years of (the twenieth) century. The story follows in detail the mining prospectors of 1907 - their silver discoveries; the early mines - their success and failures; the depressing World War I years; then rebirth with the mother lode discovery in 1920 and its climactic decade of phenomenal silver treasure; finally, the inevitable exhaustion of known deposits. Falling metal prices discourage continued searches. Mines close - sudden abandonment. This particular drama of prospectors and developers struggling with the Precambrian rocks is a constant, unifying theme. (This) is the story of a mining community and its people, of fellowship and stubborn pleasure." Very light edge wear, previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper and embossed blind stamp on half-title page. A previous owner has amended the map of Silver Centre, 1924, adding the location of two rinks and a ball park, extending the left side of the map to show the rail yard, railway station and loading ramp, and filling in some squares indicating the location of buildings with red ink. 246 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings. "From portage trails snaking their way through the wilderness to superhighways carrying the raw materials and produce of an industrial nation, Canada's roads have had a romantic but long-neglected history. The problems which Canada has faced in seeking to connect two oceans by road would have been formidable even in a land more densely populated. Early builders found their way blocked by forest and swamp, rivers, rocks, vast areas of grassland, mountains, and muskeg. Their gradual success is recounted from the woodland trail cleared by Champlain in Acadia on through the early construction by corvee in New France; the Temiscouta Trail between the Atlantic Provinces and the Canadas; the infamous corduroy roads and bridges which jolted passengers unmercifully and lamed their horses; the plank roads, Canada's first contribution to road-building science; the cart tracks cut into the virgin prairies by Metis buffalo hunters; the Cariboo Road, build through sheer canyons and over mountain passes to the gold fields fo the Upper Fraser; and the vehicles which travelled these routes - the wonderul assortment of sleighs, caleches, buckboards, Red River carts, wagons, and stage-coaches of the nineteenth century. Then came the automobile, and with it an unprecedented personal mobility. Today Canada's roads are one of her principal resources. The Trans-Canada Highway, a dream for most of a century, has forged a new tie of asphalt and concrete, unifying the country." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny dent on front hinge.

Robert Hale, London, 1954, revised edition.
211 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, fold-out map at rear. "The Channel Islands are the oldest of Her Majesty's overseas possessions. Their self-governing status in the British Commonwealth is unique and through t heir long and often troubled history they have frequently played a part in world affairs that is out of all proportion with their size. In this book, which is illustrated from a profusion of well chosen photographs, the author has given an e r u d i t e portrait of the islands as they are at the present time. The day-to-day life of the islanders, the peculiarity of their institutions, customs and government are woven with the story of their past to form a fascinating picture. The r ea de r is s ho wn the beauty of the countryside with its prosperous agriculture and the grandeur of the towering cliffs and shares in the fascination of the little islets whose only inhabitants are the sea birds. The author....has lived in one o r o the r of the is lan d s almost all his life, becoming a Channel Islander by adoption at an early age. With the exception of a break for war service, he has devoted all the time he can spare from bookselling to the study of the islands, part icu larl y th ei r b ird life . H is enthusiasm as a field naturalist has taken him to every part of the larger islands and to most of the smaller reefs and rocks. The Channel Islands have received much publicity since their occupation by the Ger man Army durin g t he w ar, but f ew ac cou nts have presented such a comprehensive and readable story of an area that never fails to captivate for life all those who visit it." Countryside Books, Newbury, Berkshire, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 185306153 B&w map, photographs, reproductions. "Over the centuries, the Bristol Channel, with one of the highest tidal ranges in the world and opening out to the fury of the Atlantic Ocean, has seen the en d of many a fine ship. Both English and Welsh coasts have their own particular hazards, including the cruel chain of reefs, rocks and cliffs from Hartland Point to Bridgwater Bay and the treacherous Gower Coast. (This book) tells the stor i e s b e h i n d some of the most dramatic and unusual of these disasters. Lundy Island, for centuries the haunt of smugglers and pirates, was the scene in 1906 of the spectacular wreck of HMS Montague, a first class battleship of 14,000 tons. T he s ch o on er G ip sy brought the entire port of Bristol to a standstill in 1878 when she ran aground in the Avon Gorge. Locked in the holds of the Admiralty tender Caesar, 68 victims of the press gang drowned when she was driven onto the rock s o f P wll du He ad in 176 0. In 1883, the two daughters of the Mumbles lighthouse keeper stood in the raging sea, hauling survivors of the stricken lifeboat Wolverhampton from the waves. Graham Smith brings these and many more stories to life, reca llin g th e c hara cte rs who man ned these working vessels and the more unusual ships of this busy waterway. For this is an account not only of the ships that foundered but also of the courage and heroism displayed by seamen and those who ris ked t heir lives to save them ."
