DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
3 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." Mino r fi nger m ark o n fro nt fre e end paper, tiny fain stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good+/V ery Go od

4 Black, M.H. Foreword by Geoffrey Cass. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1584-1984.
Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1984 0521264731 / 9780521264730 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
343 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "In 1984 the Press celebrates four hundred years of continuous printing and publishing, and this history gives a readable and not-too-formal introduction to that unique record. It is the story of the development of the printing and publishing arm of the University of Cambridge, from the medieval system of resident stationers who dealt in manuscripts to the present large printing and publishing house which produces computer software and audio cassette tapes as well as books (mostly now computer-set). The narrative is given its proper setting in the development of the University, which has inevitably determined the history of the Press itself; in the history of the book trade as a whole; and in the intellectual and political history of England which has at times affected the fortunes of the Press. There are anecdotes about powerful personalities, from Richard Bentley to Stanley Morison, which give colour and life to the sober black-and-white history of printing and publishing." Previous owner's name label tipped-in on half-title page, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light browning on spine, small ghost sticker mark on rear flap.

It is a study of the psychosociological tensions that affected these young people - a group of intelligent and able men who were only partially in control of their destinies, yet had the ambitions, the achieve m e n t m o t i v ation, possibly the group skills and personal innovation, to strive and struggle through the dramatic events they experienced. We will come to learn a good deal about these four men (and the mother of one of them) - to see their fr us tr at i on s, t he ir loneliness, their anomie, their failures. At the same time their enthusiasms, their successes, their hopes and dreams, come through constantly, giving a poignancy to their story that transcends the 'facts' themselves. Th e s tuf f o f thi s s tud y i s a n extensive series of letters from the lieutnants back to their families during the height of the hostilities....this book also draws on an intriguing new method of study whose name is content anlaysis. A parti cula r br anch of th is c onte nt a nlay sis field is explored here - the use of the computer to analyze the content of particular texts. All the letters....have been entered into a computer and treated to a sophisticated content anaysis program t hat c onsid ers t hem alo ng ni nety- seven sepa rate psychosociological paramters. The resulting glimpses further help to explain some of the critical differences hinted at in the texts themselves....This fresh view of historical method is elabo rated in dat a in t he A ppen dixes. 10 Coetzer, Owen. THE ANGLO-BOER WAR: THE ROAD TO INFAMY, 1899-1900. COLENSO, SPIOENKOP, VAALKRANTZ, PIETERS, BULLER AND WARREN.
London Arms and Armour 1996 1854093665 / 9781854093660 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
294 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, maps. "On the 'Road to Infamy' could be found the very best of British colonial military and administrative talents - 'Bobs' Roberts - a hero of the Indian campaigns, Sir George White, the 'Blimp ' - like Redvers Henry Buller - a popular and highly regarded officer, Sir Charles Warren - one time Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, and others. It was not a road they enjoyed taking. The Natal campaign of the Second Boer War, and the names of Spioenkop, Colenso, Vaalkrantz and Ladysmith, would blight the reputations of these men and lead to their appearance at a Royal Commission of Enquiry in London in 1902/3 where they were asked why an apparently one-sided conflict could have cost so much in terms of men, money and material. This fresh investigative study of this enthralling passage of history sheds new light on the controversial strategies, directives, opinions and reports which permeated every element of the campaign and, as such, adds significantly to literature on the subject." A few pages with soft crease at top corner, slight cigarette odor, slight bump and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two corner with very small bump, small heavy bump at bottom corner of front board, light edge wear - mainly on bottom edge. Dust jacket light wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top edge, light rubbing.

13 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." It was during the Great War, whilst serving in 1915 as both an artillery and medical officer in the Second Battle of Ypres, that he wrote his famous poem (In Flanders Fields). Set against a background of nearly half a century of history, (the author) brings alive in fascinating detail John McCrae and his world - amongst them Rudyard Kipling, Leo Amery, Sir Alexander Fleming, and Stephen Leacock; the threads that linked their lives; and the story of four people who, after the war, were instrumental in the events that led to poppies being manufactured and sold to raise funds." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom edge of front panel.
