190 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). B&w photographs, drawings. "Jean Batten is one of the great names in aviation history. She was born in New Zealand in 1909, a few weeks after Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel, and qualified for a flying licence at the London Aero Club in 1930. (This book) tells the story of (her) early life and of all her famous flights. The vivid descriptions of these flights, made nearly 50 years ago, highlight the hardships and dangers faced by the early aviators. Quite alone she flew immense distances in record times and in the most basic of aeroplanes. Not only did her flights create time records, but they also blazed the trail for the modern airline routes. The book is based on her earlier work 'My Life' 1938, but thoroughly revised and lengthened by the author without losing its period feel. Now, to a new generation of readers, used to sophisticated jet travel, her achievements will seem incredible. (A) gripping story of skill and courage written by one of the last great pioneer aviatiors." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny corner bumps small faint erased pencil marks at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, minor edge browning, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

150 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778456 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "For both the Axis and Allied Powers, Malta was a vital key to victory - not only in the Mediterranean, but in North Africa and the Middle East as well. In this new edition of his highly-praised book....(the author) provides one of the most intriguing and realistic accounts of the struggle for possession of the island, a fight to the death which lasted two-and-a-ha l f y e a r s , during which time 14,000 tons of bombs were dropped on a defiant population. The book is largely based on the diaries of Lord David Douglas-Hamiton, the author's uncle, who was sent out to Malta as a Spitfire Squadron Leader at a ti me wh en t he i sl and was sustaining heavier bombing than London at the height of the Blitz, and the Axis forces were preparing for invasion. The author's scrupulous research, combined with his uncle's uniquely authoritative viewpoint, vivid ly rec r eat es the pe rio d, the comradeship and the grimness of life on the beleaguered island. The air battle, which was the second largest of the entire war, involved some of the most famous fighter aces of World War II, including 'Screwball' Beu rlin g and Lad die Luca s. The y all played a vital part in what proved to be one of the greatest defensive and strategic operations of all time, and their exploits, along with those of many others, are recorded here, a reminder of their indomit able spir it in the face of a ppa llin g odds." London Faber and Faber 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
288 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H). "It is primarily as a lyrical poet and a poet of places that (Durrell) is acknowledged to excel, but now that he has assembled in (this book) 'all that the author wishes to preseve' it will be found that the range of feeling and ideas, of wit and experience, and also of style, is remarkable. The poems have been arranged by the author himself, not in chronological order but according to their various kinds. Mr. Durrell is a romantic poet in an age of didactic and sectarian poetry; and by temperament and choice Mediterranean rather than Nordic. All those who have acquired an ear for his verse by reading the volumes in which it has been published, and all those seriously interested in the poetry of the 'thirties, the 'forties and the 'fifties, will wish to have his 'Collected Poems'; other readers will come to it from his novels or his island books." 128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 1550689266 A collection of b&w photographs & reproductions with informative captions. "....looks back at some of the mishaps and disasters involving ships that sailed the Great Lakes long ago. Many of these incidents happened during the fierce storms of autumn, others were the result of horrific fires, groundings, collisions or sinkings. Sudden storms proved deadly for some ships, driving them onto shore where helpless onlookers watched or ca tching them in the open lake where they sank without a trace, taking the entire crew to their deaths. Each of the Great Lakes has its own history and particular reputation for danger to shipping. Each of them has shoal areas littered with w r e c k s a nd also holds undiscovered 'graveyards' in deeper waters where ships have gone down. Sport divers and history buffs have located some of these long-lost wrecks, while many remain elusive. A few of the Great Lakes ships noted in this b oo k le ft t h e inland seas to work in saltwater. During the war years many were pressed into service and successfully aided the war effort - some returned, while others became the victims of enemy action or casualties of the elements. Sometim es, to o, th e i nci de nt s described were minor mishaps with no loss of life, but all these stories record the accidents and the challenges that faced the brave men and women who sailed the Great Lakes." 19 Harries, Meirion and Harries, Susie. SOLDIERS OF THE SUN: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE IMPERIAL JAPANESE ARMY, 1868-1945.
Random House, New York, (1992), 1st. U.S. Edition.
471 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0394569350 B&w plates. "The Imperial Japanese Army was a legend in its own time. To the defenders of Singapore and Bataan, its soldiers were demonic supermen. The willingness of Japa nese troops consistently to fight to the last man remains a benchmark of courage today. Yet these heroes of Saipan and Iwo Jima were also capable of unparalleled bestiality - the rape of Nanking, the use of slave labour on the Burma-Siam R a i l w a y , g ross neglect and brutalisation of prisoners-of-war, a ruthless counter-insurgency campaign against Mao's communists. In attempting to resolve this paradox, the authors have traced the origins of the Imperial Army back to its samu ra i ro ot s in n in e te enth century Japan to tell the story of the rise and fall of this extraordinary military force. They describe the command structure, the strategies, weaponry and training, the brutality that pervaded the daily lives of th e m en , a nd th e s low de te rio ration of the officer corps. Drawing on Japanese, English, French and American sources, the authors penetrate the lingering haze of wartime emnity and propaganda to lay bare the true character of the Imperial Arm y as it evo lve d, shed ding lig ht on t he processes that have shaped Japan and Asia as they exist today." Grosset & Dunlap, New York, n.d.
385 pp, 8vo (8 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, colour frontispiece. "The subject of the following biography, the celebrated Colonel Daniel Boone, is one of the most remarkable men which this country has produced. His cha racter is marked with originality, and his actions were important and influential in one of the most interesting periods of our history - that of the early settlement of Kentucky. Boone is generally acknowledged as the founder of that State . H i s h aving explored it alone to a considerable extent; his leading the earliest bands of settlers; his founding Boonesborough, the nucleus of the future State; his having defended this and other stations successfully against the attacks of th e I nd ia ns ; a nd the prominent part which he took in military affairs at this period of distress and peril, certainly render his claims to the distinguished honor of founding Kentucky very strong. But Boone, personally, reaped very little bene fi t f rom hi s p at rio tic and disinterested exertions. The lands which he had first cultivated and defended, were taken from him by the chicanery of the law; other lands granted to him by the Spanish government were lost by his inattention to le gal f or ms; and in h is old age he was without an acre of land which he could call his own. A few years before his death a small tract, such as any other settler in Missouri was entitled to, was granted him by Congress. But he has left to his nu mero us pos teri ty a nobl er inhe ritance - that of an imperishable fame in the annals of his country!" Small bump at corners of boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight browning at edges, slight fading of color on top of text block. Dus t jac ket has been pric e clip ped , has small edge chips and tears - some with creases, heavy fading to spine color, light soiling, water stain on front panel. Good+/Good-
