BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
6 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887621333 Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day inva sion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland t h a n any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history....(This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manit ob a an d Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland....In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action ho ur by ho ur, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coast line . We go in wit h troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machinegun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's pro udes t day s , and one of the most significant battles of our time." MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915., Baynes, John.
14 Baynes, John. MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915.
Cassell, London, 1967.
286 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Ex-library. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "Morale is as important to a nation in peace as it is in war, on the factory floor and in an office as in a warship or a bomber's crew, in a trade union as in a regiment. In our complex, unstable times, it is vital that we should seek to understand more of morale, what it can attain and how it can be achieved. For this reason alone John Bayne's fascinating sociological study would be an inva luable contribution to the literature of an alarmingly neglected subject. But Major Baynes has a uique and rewarding approach. He has taken a sample community of proven morale and then dissected it tissue by tissue, examining each under t h e m i c r o s cope of his keenly analytical and lively mind. His 'sample' is the 2nd Scottish Rifles, a battalion of that magnificent professional Army with which Britain entered the First World War. At the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March, 19 15 , w he n it w en t 'over the top' it was some 900 strong. Six days later the battalion marched out of the line, still a fighting, disciplined unit. It was 150 strong and was commanded by a second-lieutenant. What enabled those men to keep the ir sp ir it, t hei r t ena ci ty and dash in those awful six days, so graphically recreated here, was their morale. Major Baynes has interviewed the know survivors of the battle and analysed hundreds of books, reports and private papers pertinent to his 's ampl e'. He exa mine s t he social background of the officers and men, their service, their homes, their education, upbringing, beliefs and attitudes. With the advantage of hindsight, he has evaluated their inter-relationships, their loy alti es, and t he r ules and c onven tion s by which they lived. The result is a stimulating book, important in areas far removed from the bloody fields of Flanders." Ex-library copy with some of the usual stamps, old tape and pocket removal m arks , thr ee a reas o f lig ht da mpness marks on f ront board and hinge, free front endpaper missing, a few pages with dog-ear creases, five lines of text on page 92 have green hi-liter. 158 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520290 B&w photographs, reproductions, music to Regimental March. Errata sheet tipped in on half-title page. "Since their formation in the mid-eighteenth century the 43rd and 52nd Regim ents of Foot have had a variety of changes in title, achieving in 1908 the name by which they will always be remembered, that of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, although the old cherished numbers, by which the regiments w e r e k n o w n before the Cardwell Reforms, have always b een unofficially used by the regular battalions. In 1803 they were the first regiments to become light infantry in Sir John Moore's Light Brigade, and achieved further fame in the Penins ul ar W ar as p ar t of Craufurd's Light Division. Perhaps the 52 nd's most famous success was at Waterloo, when, under Sir John Colborne's skilful handling, they made the famous charge which carried the day for the allies. With customary skill an d c our age suc cee din g generations in the Regiment lived up to their illustrious predecessors, particularly in the First and Second World Wars; their stand on the Somme in 1918 against the full weight of the German army, and their part in th e gl ider -bor ne l a ndin gs a t D- Da y are only two examples of the fighting skill which has made this regiment famous. Together with the 60th Rifles and the Rifle Brigade they are now part of the Royal Green Jackets - indeed a happy issue out o f the affl ictio n of po st wa r org anisa tio n."
