THE OXFORDSHIRE AND BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 43rd/52nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Booth, Philip. Introduction by Lt. General Sir Brian Horrocks.
9 Booth, Philip. Introduction by Lt. General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE OXFORDSHIRE AND BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY (THE 43rd/52nd REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1971, first edition.
158 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520290 B&w photographs, reproductions, music to Regimental March. Errata sheet tipped in on half-title page. "Since their formation in the mid-eighteenth century the 43rd and 52nd Regim ents of Foot have had a variety of changes in title, achieving in 1908 the name by which they will always be remembered, that of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, although the old cherished numbers, by which the regiments w e r e k n o w n before the Cardwell Reforms, have always b een unofficially used by the regular battalions. In 1803 they were the first regiments to become light infantry in Sir John Moore's Light Brigade, and achieved further fame in the Penins ul ar W ar as p ar t of Craufurd's Light Division. Perhaps the 52 nd's most famous success was at Waterloo, when, under Sir John Colborne's skilful handling, they made the famous charge which carried the day for the allies. With customary skill an d c our age suc cee din g generations in the Regiment lived up to their illustrious predecessors, particularly in the First and Second World Wars; their stand on the Somme in 1918 against the full weight of the German army, and their part in th e gl ider -bor ne l a ndin gs a t D- Da y are only two examples of the fighting skill which has made this regiment famous. Together with the 60th Rifles and the Rifle Brigade they are now part of the Royal Green Jackets - indeed a happy issue out o f the affl ictio n of po st wa r org anisa tio n." Minor browning to pages, small paper pull at fore-edge of front endpapers, light browning to edges of textblock, book is lightly cocked, small bump at bottom edge of front board and at bottom corn er of both b oards, mino r e dge we ar, li ght wr inkl ing at top/bottom of spine. 10 Breckon, Don. Introduction by Roger Malone. THE RAILWAYS PAINTINGS OF DON BRECKON.
Greenwich Editions, London, 1995.
80 pp, oblong 8vo (8 7/16" H x 10 1/2" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0862880505 Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions, b&w drawings. "Admirers of Don Breckon's unerring blend of a faultless eye for detail and an irresistible nosta lgia for the era of steam will need no prompting to acquire and treasure this beautifully produced book. It is all here: the shapely majesty of the locomotives (with the emphasis on the Great Western, but with all the Big Four well repres e n t e d ) , s e t in landscapes of a 'classical Constable calmness'; the stations, accurate in every evocative period detail; the hidden rituals of the engine shed; the porters, signalmen and passengers who were privileged to play their part in t hi s gl or io us p a no ra ma. The artist himself has provided the commentary, and Roger Malone has written an introduction full of delightful revelations of the life and work of a painter who, he says, 'reminds us of what we are missing in a worl d t ha t h as dis mis sed c har act er and individuality in favour of streamlined efficiency'." THE WASHINGTON STING., Conconi, Charles and House, Toni.
17 Conconi, Charles and House, Toni. THE WASHINGTON STING.
Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, New York, 1979, second impression.
255 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here is the dramatic and only inside account of the undercover police-FBI fencing operation - featuring cops in the guise of syndicate soldiers - whose stunning success put the 'Washington Sting' in headlines across the nation. Word was out on the street in Washington, D.C., that one of the best fences in years was working out of a warehouse on 25th Place, NE. PFF Inc., run by 'mob-connected' Italians, was buyi n g u p s t o len guns, office equipment, anything with resale value. Thieves all over the Washington area were soon submitting to the hard dealing of the gun-wielding Mafiosi, looking for quick cash and an association with the mighty aristocracy o f c ri me . As t he fence's main man, Pasquale Larocca, critically examined the typewriter or rifle offered across his bulletproof counter, and in one corner Mike Franzino cradled his shotgun in casual warning, there was no suspicion of a weapo n d ea dl y i n a d i ffe ren t way: a videotape machine which recorded every transaction from behind an unnoticed one-way mirror. 'Pasquale Larocca' and 'Mike Franzino' were the aliases of two of the undercover team of police and FBI men organize d to fi ght Was hing ton 's hig h la rceny statistics down at the underworld source. And five months after the opening of 'Police-FBI Fencing, Incognito' - five months of tense bargaining with suspicious professionals and comic encounters with f awnin g fl unki es an d pro stit ute s - t he fe nce closed around more than 200 criminals invited to meet a New York 'Don' at a party hosted by Larocca. They met, instead, with police. The single account of the caper written with the cooperation of the poli ce an d FBI and wi th fu ll a ccess to the incriminating videotapes, here is a true story of police politics and mayhem, streetwise ingenuity and volatile temperaments, told to authentic narrative effect with complete, uncensored detai l."
