204 pp, 9 7/8" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "Of more than 600 Victoria Crosses awarded to British and Empire servicemen during the First World War, nineteen were awarded to airmen of the newly formed Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. Of these, four were posthumous awards and all but one of the total were for officers. Some of these valorous airmen were from humble backgrounds and with limited education, others were collegiate men from wealthy families, but in the words of one senior officer they all had in common 'the guts of a lion'. (This book provides fascinating insights into the lives of these bravest of the brave, and of the circumstances in which they won their country's highest award for valour." Clean bright copy.

6 Durrell, Lawrence. COLLECTED POEMS.
London Faber and Faber 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
288 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H). "It is primarily as a lyrical poet and a poet of places that (Durrell) is acknowledged to excel, but now that he has assembled in (this book) 'all that the author wishes to preseve' it will be found that the range of feeling and ideas, of wit and experience, and also of style, is remarkable. The poems have been arranged by the author himself, not in chronological order but according to their various kinds. Mr. Durrell is a romantic poet in an age of didactic and sectarian poetry; and by temperament and choice Mediterranean rather than Nordic. All those who have acquired an ear for his verse by reading the volumes in which it has been published, and all those seriously interested in the poetry of the 'thirties, the 'forties and the 'fifties, will wish to have his 'Collected Poems'; other readers will come to it from his novels or his island books." THE PHILOSOPHER AND THE DRUIDS: A JOURNEY AMONG THE ANCIENT CELTS., Freeman, Philip.
7 Freeman, Philip. THE PHILOSOPHER AND THE DRUIDS: A JOURNEY AMONG THE ANCIENT CELTS.
New York Simon & Schuster 2006 978074326280 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
221 pp, 8 11/16" H. B&w maps, photographs. "Early in the first century B.C. a Greek philosopher named Posidonius began an ambitious and dangerous journey into the little-known land of the Celts. A man of great intellectual curiosity and considerable daring, (he) traveled from his home on the island of Rhodes to Rome, the capital of the expanding empire that had begun to dominate the Mediterranean. From there he planned to investigate for himself the mysterious Celts, reputed to be cannibals and savages. His journey would be one of the great adventures of the ancient world. Posidonius journeyed deep into the heart of the Celtic lands in Gaul. There he discovered that the Celts were not barbarians but a sophisticated people who studied the stars, composed beautiful poetry, and venerated a priestly caste known as the Druids. Celtic warriors painted their bodies, wore pants, and decapitated their foes. Posidonius was amazed at the Celtic women, who enjoyed greater freedoms than the women of Rome, and was astonished to discover that women could even become Druids. He returned home and wrote a book about his travels among the Celts, which became one of the most popular books of ancient times. His work influenced Julius Caesar, who would eventually conquer the people of Gaul and bring the Celts into the Roman Empire, ending forever their ancient way of life. Thanks to Posidonius, who could not have known that he was recording a way of life soon to disappear, we have an objective, eyewitness account of the lives and customs of the ancient Celts." Light browning to top of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling - mainly on rear panel, minor rubbing, two very small dents on front hinge.

10 Ladd, James D. Foreword by Lieutenant-Colonel P.G. Davis. SBS: THE INVISIBLE RAIDERS. THE HISTORY OF THE SPECIAL BOAT SQUADRON FROM WORLD WAR TWO TO THE PRESENT.
London Arms and Armour 1983 0458968900 / 9780458968909 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. There, SBS teams operated in parallel with their SAS counterparts, probing the Argentine-held islands and feeding back essential intelligence information. In an island war, they were very much in their element, and they played a key part in reconnoitring the eventual landing site for the Task Force at San Carlos." Three small light liquid marks on rear board. Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling at top edge, very light rubbing.

12 Pack, S.W.C. THE BATTLE OF MATAPAN. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
183 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "In March 1941 Britain faced the Axis powers alone. Her army was still in disarray after Dunkerque, her fleet was stretched to the uttermost. It was in this context that, 100 miles off Cape Matapan in Greece, there was fought an action in which the Italian fleet was so signally defeated that it never voluntarily offered battle again so long as the war lasted. The engagement, the first major fleet action since Jutland a quarter of a century earlier, was of historical significance for two reasons; it was the first time carrier-borne aircraft had played a vital role, and the first time that the use of radar was of preponderant importance in a large-scale fleet action. Here is an account of Matapan which, illustrated by unfamiliar action photographs, will satisfy the expert no less than it will engross the general reader." The author, Captain Pack, was present throughout the Battle in the carrier 'Formidable'. Light to moderate edge wear to boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, two previous owner's names/info./date on front pastedown, very light browning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning on spine and edges, light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

THE RULERS OF RHODESIA: FROM EARLIEST TIMES TO THE REFERENDUM., Ransford, Oliver.
14 Ransford, Oliver. THE RULERS OF RHODESIA: FROM EARLIEST TIMES TO THE REFERENDUM.
John Murray, London, 1968, first edition.
345 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, double page map. "(T)races the history of Rhodesia from earliest times up to the referendum of 1922 when the Rhodesian electorate decided to seek independence under the Crown, rather than accept the South African Government's generous terms of union. (Ransford) begins with a study of the early bushmen and their art. He then moves from this 'golden age' to the growth of the Monomatapan empire - which is best remembered for i t s great Zimbabwe-type stone buildings - and to its subjection by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century. Here he introduces his main theme: that throughout its history Rhodesia has been governed by minority elites. The Portuguese were succeede d by the enigmatic Rozwi theocrats, and they in turn by the conquering Matabele who fled from Shaka's wrath in Zululand. It was during the Matabele ascendency that British missionaries first established themselves in the country, and the extraordi na ry story is told for the first time of the way in which internal dissension came close to wrecking their mission. The second part of the book describes Cecil Rhodes' occupation of the country and the events leading up to the referendum." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light edge wear, light edge browning, some delamination on front hinge. Very Goo d/V ery Good-
