OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
1 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. Throughout, proper historical grounding is given by an informative, indexed commentary summarizing the many complex events of the period. Oxford Osprey 2001 1841760528 / 9781841760520 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Colour Plates By Mike Chappell.
48 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, map. 8 pages of colour uniform studies. "The Second World War was Britain's last as a world power; it was a citizen's war, in which most British men and women were mobilised. For a year it saw Britain standing alone aginst the fascist dictatorships; and winning it cost the sacrifice of the entire national wealth. This first title of three describes and explains the uniforms developed for European service. It traces the appearance of the 'Tommy' from pre-war mobilisation, through the years of defeat and endurance, to the final return to Europe on D-Day and the long fighting advance to northern Germany by the spring of 1945. Uniform information is supported by a campaign summary, infantry organisation tables, lists of arms and services, and basic specifications of a number of heavy weapons." Interior - small ghost sticker mark at top inside corner of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - crease down front cover near spine.

BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.

London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

"Marsland Gander is a man who has 'been places and seen things', things which he records in this autobiography of a successful journalist with all the vigour and humour of a great adventure. Born and brought up in London's East End, the future War Correspondent and Radio Critic started his career on a local paper and worked his way up. Since those early days he has visited more than thirty countries and met many famous men and women. His assignments have given him an 'inside slant' on some of the biggest stories of recent times, and in several instances he is now able to disclose information which was hitherto suppressed by the censor. (He) witnessed the much criticised campaign in Southern France, the sensational capture of Leros, the Airborne drop across the Rhine and the liberation of Rome, Athens and Amster-dam. Since the war he has toured America from coast to coast and has much to say of recent radio and television developments. There are personal anecdotes of President Truman, the Pope, Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, George Lansbury, of famous soldiers like Montgomery and Alexander, and many others." 15 Gelardi, Julia P. FROM SPLENDOR TO REVOLUTION: THE ROMANOV WOMEN, 1847-1928.
New York St. Martin's Press, 2011 0312371152 / 9780312371159 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
482 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "The years between the early 1850s and the late 1920s marked a turbulent and significant era for Russia. During that time the country underwent a massive transformation, taking it from days of grandeur under the tsars to the chaos of revolution and the beginnings of the Soviet Union. At the center of this tumult were four women of the Romanov dynasty. Marie Alexandrovna and Olga Constantinovna were born into the family, Russian grand duchesses at birth. Marie Feodorovna and Marie Pavlovna married into the dynasty: the former born a princess of Denmark, the latter a duchess of the German duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. These Romanov women, distinguished in varying degrees by their beauty and elegance, their wealth and power, savored a life of privilege and unsurpassed luxury. Marie Alexandrovna, Tsar Alexander II's pampered daughter, astonished her mother-in-law, Queen Victoria, with her strength of character. Thrust into the role of queen at age sixteen, Olga Constaninovna's altruistic streak benefited Greeks and Russians alike. Charming and vivacious, Marie Feodorovna, the mother of the ill-fated Tsar Nicholas II, excelled in her role as empress. Formidable and ambitious, Marie Pavlovna emerged as a rival to Tsarina Alexandra, Nicholas II's embattled consort. (This book) presents the unforgettable political and personal dramas of these extraordinary women. What began for them as a time of splendor ended after World War I with Russia destroyed by revolution." Small soft bump to top corner of pages 367 to 436, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - two tiny tears at top, one very small corner bump. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, soft crease down front hinge area, light edge wrinkling - maily at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Dutton, New York, 2002, first edition.

"(T)he incredible story of an extraordinary group of American artists, designers, and engineering wizards who became America's unsung heroes o f the Second World War....The men of the 23d Headquarters Special Troops were recruited to become phantom warriors in a ghost army to help win the Battle of Europe. They fought in more campaigns, from D-Day to the Rhine River, with more All i e d a r m i es, than any other unit in the European Theater of Operations - yet not even their fellow American soldiers were aware of their presence. After Douglas Fairbanks Jr., USNR, completed a tour of England and its special forces installat io ns , t he H ol ly wood star convinced the Navy brass to train an elite unit that eventually evolved into the only Army force of its kind - a top-secret band of unknown heroes. These elite soldiers counted among their number designer Bill Blass and pa in te r E lls wor th Kelly, and were inspired by Hilton Howell Railey, the 'P.T. Barnum of Deception'. The Special Troops' mission was twofold: to deceive the German army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops and materiel tha n th ey a ctu all y di d an d, e ven more heroically, to draw enemy fire on their position to allow other units to advance free of lethal resistance. Through the art of camouflage, sonic deception, and illusion this extraordinary troops of brave, ingen ious men save d cou ntles s Ame rica n lives - while sometimes losing their own. From the use of inflatable rubber tanks and howitzers to elaborate sound effects, fake radio transmissions, special effects artillery fire, and other elements of stage craft , th ese s hadow soldie rs put thei r lives on the line for their brother soldiers and for their country - only to disappear from history and memory." M. Evans, New York, 1992, reprint.

"(S)hows how the rise and decline of imperial Rome was intimately connected with the balance of political and military power. The role of the army in the Roman em pire was a formidable one: the emperor depended on the soldiers for his continued existence, as did the empire itself. But an army powerful enought to defend the frontiers and keep the Roman peace also had the power to destroy the emperor. A g a i n s t this ever-present danger the emperors took unceasing precautions, one of their principal methods being to surround themselves with bodyguards, the Praetorian Guard. But what began as a protective measure had wider repercussions, for th e Gu ar d ca me to play an even greater part in the internal politics of the empire...The story of 'The Army of the Caesars' provides a model of how civil strife, focused around the holders of military power inevitably occurs, endangering the pr eca ri ous eq ui lib riu m of large areas of the world."
