MADAME TUSSAUD: A LIFE IN WAX., Berridge, Kate.
3 Berridge, Kate. MADAME TUSSAUD: A LIFE IN WAX.
Toronto HarperCollins 2006 0002008122 / 9780002008129 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "When she died in London at the age of ninety, a survivor of one of the most tumultuous epochs in history, Madame Tussaud had travelled far from her inauspicious beginnings in Strasbourg as the daughter of a common soldier and a housekeeper. Moving to Paris as a child, Marie climbed through the ranks of French society as the protegee of charmismatic showman artist Philippe Curtius, and witnessed the French Revolution in all its grisly detail. She survived the Terror and moved to London, where she struggled to find a foothold amidst the desperate competition of showmen from all over Europe. Her touring years were studded with drama and danger, and twice she nearly lost her life and livelihood - first in a shipwreck and then at the hands of a rampaging mob in the Reform riots of 1831. The core of her exhibition was Revolutionary relics given extra potency by her victim survivor status and the famous claims that she was forced to cast the death masks of Marie Antoinette and other members of the royal family, whom she had known personally when employed to teach modelling at Versailles. But did her desire to make a compelling and commercial spectacle of the events unfolding around her extend to moulding her own dramatic story? The story of a business empire sculpted out of the ashes of one of history's most turbulent periods reveal a woman who - in exploiting the human fascination with the rich, the famous and the infamous - was far ahead of her time." Very small bump at bottom corner of both boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
4 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, (1975).
290 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....draws on the remarkably complete records of the British government offices concerned with logistics during the Revolutionary War and army service departments such as commissary, quartermaster and barrackmaster generals to provide a full account of the everyday life of the British army and an accurate record of how logistical and administrative problems in America affected the course of the war. His study makes it clear that the British army in America depended almost entirely on Britain for supplies, and that for six years inadequate and sometimes corrupt administration seriously affected the course of operations and the morale of the troops. An organization capable of supplying the army was not developed until 1781, too late to change the outcome of the war." Macmillan Company of Canada, Toronto, 1944, reprint.
362 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w frontispiece. Concludes with Notes and Bibliography. "....an exciting action story of that dramatic period in North American history when the British and French vied with each other and with the native Indians for control of this rich land; a struggle that culminated in the American Revolutionary War which raged up and down the beautiful Mohawk valley for several years and culminated in the defeat of the British by the re bels and the departure of the decimated Indians westward. It is the story of Joseph Brant, Mohawk chief, who led the People of the Longhouse, the Six Nations' Indians, through fateful years of triumph and disaster, when excitement ran high a n d d a n g er lurked round every bend of trail or river. Realizing that to survive, the Indians must have gunpowder, Joseph bargained with the white men, and when the Indians decided to fight with the British, gunpowder was the deciding factor . Ho w b ri ll ia nt was Joseph's leadership, and how nearly the Indians came to winning the war for the British, is now told for the first time in this dramatic and colourful novel. The battle strategy which Brant devised would, if followed by t he Bri ti sh , h ave wo n t he war for them. 170 years later it has formed the basis of British commando tactics. It is also the story of Joseph's love for Catherine Crogan, the beautiful half-breed Indian whose brilliant spying for the British won this tr ibu te f rom Colo nel Butler: 'How else could two hundred Rangers and a handful of Indians have lived off the enemy and kept a frontier in flames for four years?'." STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES., Croil, James.
14 Croil, James. STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good
381 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, maps. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "(This) is an exciting study of the development of steam navigation in Canada. In tracing the transition from sailing ships to the paddle-steamer, and from the paddle-steamer to the revolutionary screw-propeller, the author writes with the kind of imaginative insight that brings back to life a past age of challenge. One of the delightful features of this book is the vivid study of shipping on the Great Lakes. Croil's account of the lake ships catches the imagination with its comprehensive study of past glories: LaSalle's schooner of ten tons, whose journey was halted by the Niagara Falls; the first lake steamer, the 'Frontenac' (1816), said to be the best example of naval architecture in North America; the 'Queen Charlotte' (1818), which carried passengers from Prescott to the stage-coach station at the head of the Bay of Quinte; the 'Gore', built at Niagara in 1838, which was one of the earliest passenger steamers on Georgian Bay; and the 'Bruce Mines', which carried copper ore on Lake Huron. The reader will be equally delighted by the large number of illustrations Croil provides. (They) present a glorious pictorial record of early shipping, showing the curious Miller Twin-Boat of 1788, C.P.R.'s astonishingly modern 'Empress' line of 1891, the Ottawa river steamer, the 'Sovereign', and the 'Passport', a mail paddle-steamer which sailed from Lake Ontario to Montreal." "In her investigation of the social history of the common British soldier in the era of the American Revolution, Sylvia Frey has extensively surveyed recruiting reco rds, contemporary training manuals, statutes, and memoirs in an attempt to provide insight into the soldier's 'life and mind'. In the process she has discovered more about the common soldier than anyone thought possible: his size, age, an d g e n e r a l physical condition, his personal economics and daily existence. Her findings dispel the traditional assumpution that the army was made up largely of criminals and social misfits. Special attention is given to soldiering as an occ up a ti on . F oc us in g on two of the major campaigns of the war....Frey describes the human face of war, with particular emphasis on the physical and psychic strains of campaigning in the eighteenth century. Perhaps the most important part of the w ork is t he ana lys is of the moral and material factors which induced men to accept the high risks of soldiering. Frey rejects the traditional assumption that soldiers were motivated to fight exclusively by fear and force and argues inst ead tha t th e pr ima ry moti vati on to battle was generated by regimental esprit, which in the eighteenth century substituted for patriotism. After analyzing the sources of esprit, she concludes that it was the sustaining force for morale in a lo ng a nd d iscou ragin g wa r. This book is a contribution to our understanding of the eighteenth century and should appeal not only to military historians but also to social and economic historians and to those interested in the history of medic ine."
