A DEEP SENSE OF WRONG: THE TREASON, TRIALS, AND TRANSPORTATION TO NEW SOUTH WALES OF LOWER CANADIAN REBELS AFTER THE 1838 REBELLION., Boissery, Beverley.
6 Boissery, Beverley. A DEEP SENSE OF WRONG: THE TREASON, TRIALS, AND TRANSPORTATION TO NEW SOUTH WALES OF LOWER CANADIAN REBELS AFTER THE 1838 REBELLION.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1995.
367 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550022423 B&w maps, illustrations. "In 1839 fifty-eight men left Montreal for the penal colony of New South Wales. They were unimportant men outside their own parishes, ordinary people who had been caught up in the political whirlwind of the 1838 rebellion. Even though they were all civilians, they had been tried by court martial. Convicted of treason, their properties forfeited to the crown, they paid a heavy price for rebellion. And as convicts in Australia, they were considered the lowest of a bad lot. During their years there, however, they earned the respect of Sydney's citizens. (This) is an intimate, grass-roots history, based largely on surviving legal records and on the writings of some of the individuals who lived the story. We follow the men from the confusion of battle, to the court martial, and then to lonely exile in a land half a world away. Their anguish and dignity will resonate today." Light waviness to top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light rubbing, a few small areas of light edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good

CATEGORICALLY INCORRECT: ETHICAL FALLACIES IN CANADA'S WAR ON TERROR., Borovoy, A. Alan.

Dundurn, Toronto, 2006, first edition.
205 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1550026283 "If humanity has learned anything from the horrors of the past century, it is that our one hope is democracy. The goals of Canada's actions at home and abroad should be the preservation of democracy. Thi s is the lens through which our policies should be discerned, dissected and amended. (The author) argues that Canada has pursued an ethically and categorically incorrect war against terror. We have been needlessly dovish abroad and excessive l y h a w kish at home. In order to use military force abroad, the government fussed over the need for United Nations approval. At home, however, there are no such restraints; without even asking a court, the government may effectively deprive ce rt ai n p eo pl e of the right to make a living. As (he) summarizes: 'Internationally, key fallacies stem from an undue respect for a rule of law that does not exist. Domestically, key fallacies stem from an undue neglect of a rule of law that do es exi st ." In ter ior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine

8 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

ABORIGINAL MYTHS., Bozic, Sreten. In conjunction with Alan Marshall.
9 Bozic, Sreten. In conjunction with Alan Marshall. ABORIGINAL MYTHS.
Melbourne Gold Star 1972 0726001139 / 9780726001130 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
143 pp, 8 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "Alan Marshall is called 'Gurawilla' or 'Song maker' by the natives of Arnhem Land. He and Sreten Bozic have studied the few remaining nomadic aboriginal tribes in Australia and have come to love and admire their culture. This book is the result of their knowledge of, and respect for, a race which had and still has vastly different - and perhaps superior - ideals from those of the white invaders who commandeered their lives and land. For, until the advent of the white man, the Aboriginals lived in complete accord with nature. Australian tribal society was uniquely a-materialistic and egalitarian, and was characterized by a rich ceremonial culture and religious life. It emphasised mystical communion with the environment rather than individual achievement and the glorification of human prowess. Human life was always considered to be part of the natural cycle and the happiness and gentleness of Aboriginal society indicates the worth of a traditional naturalistic culture. These myths, the foundation of Australia's ancient cultural past, must live again in their fulness. Perhaps this book may help such a rejuvenation and create just a little understanding." Small Christmas gift inscription on front pastedown, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

211 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Number 528 of a limited edition. INSCRIBED ON LIMITATION PAGE, "WITH BEST WISHES, ROY DERHAM". B&w illustrations. "Twelve weeks with TS 'Vindicatrix' prepared young lads for a life at sea, but not for the first trip - on liner, coaster, collier or cargo boat, cruise ship, tanker or tramp steamer. Often bullied, invariably seasick; cold, wet, hungry and initially miserable, most matured to become old hands - stewards, cooks or sometimes Master. Others swore never to go to sea again, and over four hundred lost their young lives for their country. Many became Distressed Seamen, yet survived. Some were torpedoed, sometimes more than once; some found themselves in prison camps. Others sailed to exotic places and met strange people. A few jumped ship and several fell overboard. Some were pushed. Most of them had strange experiences, saw far flung lands, and made lifetime friends. Many fell in love with the sea while some hated it but it earnt the respect of them all. Most express few regrets and all those in this book remember it well - that first trip as a graduate Vindi-boy, untried, uncertain and just a little afraid. This is the sum of the maiden voyages of over fifty Vindi-boys, who learnt their trade with the old lady of Sharpness between 1939 and 1966." THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916., Duffy, Christopher.
12 Duffy, Christopher. THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2006 0297846892 / 9780297846895 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
383 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. ""The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clark; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. but, as Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the German view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war. The picture that emerges is a far cry from 'Blackadder'. The questioning by German intelligence officers was more systematic and detailed than that employed by their British counterparts. It was also more open-ended, encouraging those captured to speak freely and at length whilst still in shock from combat and capture. Their recollections are of unique interest because of their immediacy, separated from the event by a matter of hours or a few days at most, rather than being contaminated by the passing of time and outside opinion. This is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle. From the German point of view, the battle was a disaster. And the fact that every British soldier taken prisoner still believed Britian would win the war gave German intelligence teams a fair indication that their empire would go down to defeat." Minor cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of textblock, faint thumb print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

The basis of the catalogue is a collection built up by Margaret E. Edison since the early thirites, when TM began to be a leader in Canadian book designing: it is the first bibliographic catalogue of the work of a Canadian artist. Thoreau MacDonald, born near Toronto in 1901, is the only son of J.E.H. MacDonald, a member of the Group of Seven. His childhood was spent in the woods and fields near High Park and his chapter of recollections, written especially for this book, tells of his delight in nature. For the past sixty years, he has lived in Thornhill, and his love and respect for the rural way of life is referred to by Barker Fairley in an introductory letter, also written for this book. An evaluation of his work by E.R. Hunter, art critic and author of a book on Thoreau MacDonald, is contained in the text." Publishing News, London, 2000.
144 pp, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1903040027 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, uniform studies, maps/battle plans. "(T)ells the story of one of the great military elites of the past - the Rifleman. It shows him at his finest moment in the green jacket of the 95th Rifles in the wars against Napoleon. It reveals the way he fought, the weapons and equipment he used, and the tactics he perfected. First-hand accounts are matched by bri lliant colour reconstructions of the Rifleman, bringing the reality of the battle to the reader. The invention of the rifle gave a new twist to warfare. Hunters became soldiers who fought in green and hid behind cover - the days of brightly - u n i f o r med ranks of men exchanging volleys of fire was over. Developed in the forests of North America, the Rifleman revolutionised the art of war. In the campaigns against Napoleon, units of British Riflemen took on French light infantry a rm ed w it h mu sk ets. Trained to act independently and with a respect for his own skills, the Rifleman was an exceptionally intelligent warrior, the forefather of today's combat soldier. His greatest moments in the Peninsular War and at the bat tle of Wa ter lo o a re vividly described in first-hand accounts, but some of the myths of the Rifleman are also punctured." 601 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060182229 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(S)hows how inspiringly spontaneous and superficially haphazard Rommel's style of leadership could be: 'Rommel believed that war is a re ckless, untidy business, and that the habits of mind of a methodical manager are alien to what is required'. Instead, his hallmarks were boldness of manoeuvre, ferocity of attack, and tenacity in pursuit. These were the qualities he display e d i n h is great battles in the North African desert; they were, David Fraser demonstrates, evident from his earliest battles in the First World War to his last, defending Fortress Europe from the Allied invasion of 1944....Rommel reached a posi ti on in w h ic h he almost inevitably became embroiled in politics. When he realized that the Allied invasion was going to succeed, he realized also that the only way to save Germany was somehow to negotiate a peace settlement. He tried to pres ent Hi t ler - to wh om he had always been devoted, and who had always shown him a particular respect and affection - with the military realities: he was branded a defeatist and ignored. But his opinions, and his apparent links (meticulously dis cuss ed b y Fras er) wi th t he Stauffenberg plotters of July 1944 - one of them, under interrogation, mentioned Rommel as a possible head of post-Hilterian Gemany - condemned him is the eyes of the Fuhrer he had served so loyally. He was offered the c hoice o f tri al b y a Peopl e's Court - a sham of course - or suicide, a state funeral and protection for his family. He chose the latter. Rommel is not, to David Fraser, a flawless hero: his failings as well as his genius are recorded here . But he ha d t hat in stinc t fo r batt le and leadership which set him apart from his contemporaries and places him among the great commanders." "(Describes) the deveopment and careers of the last of the fighting biplanes, the little Gloster Gladiator, which carried something of the First World War into that second epic struggle; that indomitable trio of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighters, the Wildcat, Hellcat and Corsair, which destroyed the myth of Japanese aerial invincibility founded by the Zero-Sen; the fighter versions of the Junkers Ju 88 whose nocturnal depredations in the R.A.F.'s bomber stream over the Third Reich were so impressive at one period of the War that the abandoning of large-scale night attacks on German targets was seriously considered; the highly manoeuvrable Macchi C.202 Folgore with its beautifully co-ordianted controls - a pilot's aeroplane in every respect; the Japanese Army's equivalent of the Zero-Sen, the Nakamima Ki.43 Hayabusa, and its successor, the Ki.84 Hayate which could out-climb and out-manoeuvre the most advanced versions of the Mustang and Thunderbolt; Heinkel's superlative He 219 night fighter which, but for ministerial muddle and confusion, would have provided the Allies with some serious headaches. These and many other fighters, both successful and unsuccessful, but all 'famous', are surveyed with hundreds of rare photographs, highly detailed full-page tone drawings by Peter Endsleigh Castle, and comparative side views of the many variants of each aircraft by Dennis I. Punnett." Very small bump at top of spine, very small dent/tear on spine near rear hinge, areas of minor browning on endpapers. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small area of delamination at top of front hinge, one small edge tear archivally taped.

Their continued survival is largely due to the organization of healers known as the Eumedicos and to the Seekers Veritas, a unique group composed of pairs of Bondmates, one human and one ghatti - a telepathic catlike being native to Methuen who bonds with a specific human for life. These Bondmates travel from town to town, settling disputes by truth-reading the minds and emotions of plaintiffs and defendants. While most people respect the Seekers, there are those who fear the ghatti powers. And now someone has been attacking Seekerpairs. W hat no one knows is that this destroyer has targeted one specific pair of Bondmates as special victims - the woman Doyce and the ghatta Khar'pern. For the key to defeating this deadly foe is locked away in Doyce's mind behind barriers even her ghatta has never been able to break down..."
