4 Castle, John. WELLINGTON.
Wellington A.H. and A.W. Reed 1969 Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ John Castle.
32 pp, 9 5/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "As John Castle's thoughful, entertaining text makes clear, Wellington is a city dominated and shaped by its environment. Its streets, its commercial centre, its residential areas, all have had to come to terms with the realities of wind and sea and hill. It is a city of contrasts, a city whose character is difficult to catch with brush or pen. But in this book, John Castle has succeeded triumphantly with both. His paintings evoke almost every mood of this often mercurial city, and his text is an informative, often humorous, history. For the Wellington resident this book will bring a pleasing rediscovery of his native city; to the visitor it will be both a delightful introduction and a worthy memento of New Zealand's capital." Several small and tiny dints on bottom edge of boards and one on fore-edge of rear board, three small air bubbles under cloth on rear board, light foxing and browning on top of book, minor browning and soiling. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear with creases, several tiny chips light rubbing, light browning.

LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES., Colville, Robert.
5 Colville, Robert. LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES.
Robert Hale, London, 1951, first edition.
268 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, fold-out map at rear. "The area which is the subject of this book is one of great variety and contrast. From Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath the land slopes away to busy and conge sted Camden Town; in Somers Town vast building schemes are carried out beside quiet old squares; historic houses stand near to new and prosperous residential quarters. There is an astonishing variety of institutions, from the Zoo and Holl o w a y a n d P entonville prisons to University colleges and other places of learning and research, from the Caledonian Market to the ancient foundation of Queen Matilda. Over the whole scene hangs the atmosphere both of accomplished and pending c ha ng e. T he g r ea t railway companies, four of whose termini profoundly affect the life of parts of the area, are nationalised; the well-run private house, once the hall mark of the Northern Heights, is giving way to blocks of flats. Mr Co lvi lle de scr i bes th is ch ang ing scene and its implications in an objective and impartial manner. Although the time is the present, the past is used to explain developments and tendancies, and a clear picture of an area in transition appears ." Ligh t br owni ng to endp ape rs, sli ght bowing to rear board, corner crease and tiny hinge tear (archivally taped) on folding map, very light edge wear, small wrinkle across lower spine, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor foxing ma rks on t op of text blo ck. Dust jac ket has m oderate edge wear/wrinkling along with small chips and tears - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing on rear panel. Very Good/Good+

7 Jencks, Charles, essays by. (Robert Stern.) ROBERT AM STERN: SELECTED WORKS. ARCHITECTURAL MONOGRAPHS NO 17.
Academy Editions, (London, 1991).
144 pp, 4to (12" H), soft cover with self-flaps. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photos, drawings, plans, elevations. "Robert Stern's work as an architect is indivisible from his abiding concern with history and historical style. He regards Post-Modernism not as a random recycling of past styles, but as a necessary liberation from what he calls the 'perennial present' of the Modern Movement. In the four essays reproduced in this Monograph he urges contemporary architects to widen their vocabulary, to learn from the past in order to 'reunite current production with the traditions that a previous generation tried so hard to subvert'. The 33 projects featured here reveal the range of influences which have in formed Robert Stern's projects and buildings: from the Lutyens and Kahn inspired Lang and Westchester houses of the early 70s to later 'Shingle Style' solution such as the Lawson and Marblehead residences. Also featured are a number of larger scale buildings such as the Mexx International Headquarters in the Netherlands and the Disney Casting Center in Florida which have consolidated Stern's reputation over the last five years." Interior - small area of light soiling on half- title page, bottom of inside front hinge cracked. Exterior - light edge wear, rubbing to glossy covers - no color loss, spine flat and uncreased. VG-
