Toronto University of Toronto Press 1974 0802020925 / 9780802020925 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
732 pp, 9 1/4" H. "This bibliography lists and annotates material published between 1960 and 1970 of interest to the serious student of the Indians and Metis in Canada. A team of researchers worked through books, monographs, journals, theses, unpublished papers and reports, publications by Indians, and federal and provincial government documents to generate over three throusand entries covering a multi-disciplinary range of aspects of current society and culture. Some aspects such as physical anthropology, biomedicine, archaeology, and linguistics had to be excluded, however. Both English- and French-language sources were covered. The entries are arranged by topic or tribe, and there is an index to assist in cross-reference or finer selection. Of special note is the Case Law Digest, which describes briefly the facts and decisions of all significant legal cases involving Indians since 1867. The systematic exposition of these decisions should help increase understanding of the legal situation in which Indians now live." THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945., Barclay, Glen St. J.
4 Barclay, Glen St. J. THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1976, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297771256 B&w plates. "(A) study of the military strength of Britain and her Empire during the Boer War, First World War and Second World War. Dr Barclay evaluates the contributions of Aus tralia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, and the changing roles played by the colonies during times of crisis. He explains British attitudes to colonial troops - Australian indiscipline and New Zealand thoroughness - and the lack of diplomacy on the part of British military leaders when dealing with their colonial counterparts. After the South Africa War the British government should have seen clearly the advantages of an Empire Military Force, but reports on empire defence from eminen t naval officers such as Fanshawe and Jellicoe were repeatedly ignored. The colonies themselves all reacted differently to the threat of war. Australia was often at odds with New Zealand - the former worried about defending her own vulnerable coa st line, the latter primarily concerned to maintain friendly relationships with Britain; Canada was slow to become involved - but Canadian troops were a stirring sight, well-disciplined fighting men who obeyed their superiors without question; South Af rica made little contribution to the war effort, although her Prime Minister, Jan Smuts, gained great favour with the British Government by always agreeing, in principle, to every new plan put forward by the British. Dr Barclay has written an o utst anding account of the achievements of the British Empire during the late nineteenth and twentieth century, using a vast number of published and unpublished sources." MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915., Baynes, John.
5 Baynes, John. MORALE: A STUDY OF MEN AND COURAGE. THE SECOND SCOTTISH RIFLES AT THE BATTLE OF NEUVE CHAPELLE 1915.
Cassell, London, 1967.
286 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Ex-library. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "Morale is as important to a nation in peace as it is in war, on the factory floor and in an office as in a warship or a bomber's crew, in a trade union as in a regiment. In our complex, unstable times, it is vital that we should seek to understand more of morale, what it can attain and how it can be achieved. For this reason alone John Bayne's fascinating sociological study would be an inva luable contribution to the literature of an alarmingly neglected subject. But Major Baynes has a uique and rewarding approach. He has taken a sample community of proven morale and then dissected it tissue by tissue, examining each under t h e m i c r o s cope of his keenly analytical and lively mind. His 'sample' is the 2nd Scottish Rifles, a battalion of that magnificent professional Army with which Britain entered the First World War. At the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March, 19 15 , w he n it w en t 'over the top' it was some 900 strong. Six days later the battalion marched out of the line, still a fighting, disciplined unit. It was 150 strong and was commanded by a second-lieutenant. What enabled those men to keep the ir sp ir it, t hei r t ena ci ty and dash in those awful six days, so graphically recreated here, was their morale. Major Baynes has interviewed the know survivors of the battle and analysed hundreds of books, reports and private papers pertinent to his 's ampl e'. He exa mine s t he social background of the officers and men, their service, their homes, their education, upbringing, beliefs and attitudes. With the advantage of hindsight, he has evaluated their inter-relationships, their loy alti es, and t he r ules and c onven tion s by which they lived. The result is a stimulating book, important in areas far removed from the bloody fields of Flanders." Ex-library copy with some of the usual stamps, old tape and pocket removal m arks , thr ee a reas o f lig ht da mpness marks on f ront board and hinge, free front endpaper missing, a few pages with dog-ear creases, five lines of text on page 92 have green hi-liter. TESTING EARLY JETS: COMPRESSIBILITY AND THE SUPERSONIC ERA., Beaumont, Roland. Foreword by Sir Peter Masefield.
6 Beaumont, Roland. Foreword by Sir Peter Masefield. TESTING EARLY JETS: COMPRESSIBILITY AND THE SUPERSONIC ERA.
Airlife, Shrewsbury, 1990.
143 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1853101583 B&w photographs. "Roland Beaumont is one of the most experienced and highly-rated test pilots of the post-war era. In this book he outlines the significance of developments in early jets. Beaumont is well placed to make such assessments. As chief test pilot, he made the first flights on fourteen new-type aircaft. He was test pilot on many of the first and second generation jet fighters and bombers, both Briti s h a n d American, as well as the first British supersonic aircraft. The core of the book is made up of the author's flight test reports on such aircraft as the Gloster Meteor, the North American B45, the English Electric Canberra, the English El ec tr i c Li gh tning and Britain's first supersonic bomber, the TSR2, a project which was cancelled before the aircraft went into production. In conclusion, the author looks to a future in which he sees supersonic flight playing an ever-increasing ro le, e sp eci all y in the field of military aviation." MARCHING AS TO WAR: CANADA'S TURBULENT YEARS, 1899-1953., Berton, Pierre.
8 Berton, Pierre. MARCHING AS TO WAR: CANADA'S TURBULENT YEARS, 1899-1953.
Doubleday Canada 2001 0385257252 / 9780385257251 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
632 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the tumultuous years of the (20th) century's first half like bookends on the shelf of history. They have a good deal in common, these two minor conflicts, whose chronicles pale when compared to the bloodbaths of the two world wars. Canada's wartime days are long past, and for many, the scars of war have healed. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadian blood. Now a days, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of the international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process. In this monumental work, Pierre Berton brings Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals at the front, and the politicians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, 'Marching as to War' describes how the experience of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationship with the United States." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling and very minor rubbing.

RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE., Bull, Theodore, editor.
10 Bull, Theodore, editor. RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE.
Michael Joseph, London, 1967, first edition.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, fold-out map showing land apportionment in 1965. "The first and major portion of this book consists of a factual account of some of the more important political, social and economic developments in Britain's colony of Southern Rhodesia from the time of the first European occupation to the present day. It draws on historical records, official reports and government statements to explain what the Land Apportionment Act is, why it was introduced, and what its practical effects are; to examine local government, the educational systems, and economic development in urban and rural areas; to analyse the effect which some of the past and present legislation has on the living a n d working conditions of black and white Rhodesians; and, in the process, to illustrate the political attitudes of Europeans and Africans, and the separate development of the racial communities. (It) collates much of the kind of factual material w hi ch used to appear regularly in the Salisbury journal, the 'Central African Examiner', before it ceased publication. UDI and the censorship imposed under the Emergency regulations in November, 1965, resulted in the 'Examiner's' December issue bei ng heavily cut - about half the material submitted for censorship was banned. The journal's publishing company launched a court case to challenge the legality of censorship and so, by implication, of the Rhodesian regime, but this was unsuccessful and the December 1965 issue was therefore (its) last. The factual material in this book was prepared by former contributors to the 'Examiner' and edited by Theodore Bull, the sponsor and former editor of the journal. His own personal assessment o f Br itish policy on Rhodesia, before and since UDI, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock, forms the second part of the book. His conclusions are controversial, and readers of widely differing political views could be equally shocked by t hem, but they may stimulate a healthy reassessment of attitude towards the whole unhappy Rhodesian situation." Chicago Contemporary Books 1993 0809238047 / 9780809238040 First Edition Soft Cover Good+
221 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Throughout history and continuing to this day, occurrences have been reported that are so extraordinary there seem to be no possible natural explanations. Yet the credibility of the witnesses - often including thousands who have simultaneously observed the same mysterious event - and the consistency of these events across centuries of time and disparate parts of the earth indicate that they cannot be easily dismissed. (P)opular writer and aeronautics expert Martin Caidin reviews some of the most fascinating of these observations. Among the phenomena he discusses are: Careful tests by scientists showing that some people really can control objects at at distance; Reports from Vietnam combat marines of huge, glowing yellow 'semi-humans' impervious to machine-gun fire; Testimony from several different teams of Soviet cosmonauts citing encounters with 'giant angels'; Documented reports of people using divining rods to find rich deposits of ore, oil, and underground water sources that had gone undetected by scientific instruments; UFO sightings noted throughout recorded history - and their incredibly consistent similarity over three thousand years and many lands." Toronto Natural Heritage 2007 1897045220 / 9781897045220 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
206 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "New Brunswick's enormous timber trade attracted the first wave of Scots in the late 18th century. As economic conditions in Scotland worsened, the flow of emigrants increased, creating distinctive Scottish communities along the province's major timber bays and river frontages. While Scots relied on the timber trade for economic sustenance, their religion offered another form of support, sustaining them in a spiritual and cultural sense. These two themes, the axe and the bible, underpin their story. Using wide-ranging documentary sources, includ-ing passenger lists and newspaper shipping reports, (this book) traces the progress of Scottish colon- ization and its ramifications for the province's early development. Who were these Scots? What factors caused them to select their various locations? What problems did they face? Were they successful pioneers? Why was the Scottish Church so important to them? In tracing the process of emigration, (the author) offers new insights on where Scots settled, their overall impact and the cultural legacy they left behind. (It) is the first fully documented account of Scottish emigration to New Brunswick." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

15 Coetzer, Owen. THE ANGLO-BOER WAR: THE ROAD TO INFAMY, 1899-1900. COLENSO, SPIOENKOP, VAALKRANTZ, PIETERS, BULLER AND WARREN.
London Arms and Armour 1996 1854093665 / 9781854093660 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
294 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, maps. "On the 'Road to Infamy' could be found the very best of British colonial military and administrative talents - 'Bobs' Roberts - a hero of the Indian campaigns, Sir George White, the 'Blimp ' - like Redvers Henry Buller - a popular and highly regarded officer, Sir Charles Warren - one time Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, and others. It was not a road they enjoyed taking. The Natal campaign of the Second Boer War, and the names of Spioenkop, Colenso, Vaalkrantz and Ladysmith, would blight the reputations of these men and lead to their appearance at a Royal Commission of Enquiry in London in 1902/3 where they were asked why an apparently one-sided conflict could have cost so much in terms of men, money and material. This fresh investigative study of this enthralling passage of history sheds new light on the controversial strategies, directives, opinions and reports which permeated every element of the campaign and, as such, adds significantly to literature on the subject." THE SANDS OF DUNKIRK., Collier, Richard.
16 Collier, Richard. THE SANDS OF DUNKIRK.
London Collins 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
319 pp, 8 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "In May 1940, the German army and Luftwaffe drove a beaten army back across northern France to the Channel coast, cut off all lines of retreat and smashed the only port within reach; even Churchill feared 'the greatest military disaster of our long history'. Everybody knows that a third of a million British troops did escape to fight again another day. Many know at what a cost in ships and lives the rescue operation was carried out. But the whole astonishing story of Dunkirk as a human experience, of what it really meant to be there, has never yet been told. Now Richard Collier has written a vivid and authentic account based on exhaustive research and hundreds of interviews in England, France and Germany. For the first time we have, not the verdict of a military historian nor the creation of a novelist, but a narrative based on the experiences of those who were there as the enemy drew closer and the bombardment intensified - the bewildered skipper of a Thames barge, the helpless civilian, the soldier on the beach, the exhausted Stuka pilot, the stoical and the terrified." 566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England.
