2 Aiken, Conrad. SELECTED POEMS.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1929 First, limited edition. Hard Cover Fair Signed by Author
361 pp, 8 1/2" H. Green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decorative banding, patterned paper-covered boards. *Lacking the publisher's slipcase.* No. 3 of 210 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad Aiken on the limitation page. Aiken was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Selected Poems' in 1930. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Adrianne / on the way to / Hollywood / from / Philip Merivale / March : 1932". Philip Merivale was born in India, began his acting and screenwriting career in England, later moving to Los Angeles. This book is from the library of the actor Raymond Massey and we presume the 'Adrianne' of the dedication was Massey's first wife, Adrianne Allen (m.1929-1939). Ms. Allen is perhaps best known for her role in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Following her divorce from Massey, Ms. Allen married American lawyer, William Dwight Whitney (and Massey married Whitney's ex-wife). In 1957 she joined her daughter, Anna Massey and Philip Merivale's son, John Merivale, in the Broadway production "The Reluctant Debutante", playing Sheila Broadbent, mother of the character played by Anna. Many pages have not been opened and others have rough edges from opening, several edge tears (archivally taped) or pieces missing from margins/corners between pages 329 & 336 - no text missing, age darkening to edges of text block - especially top of text block, moderate to heavy edge wear to boards - more at corners, browning to spine, light browning and some thin brown stains on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, line dent across bottom of text block, small bump at top edge of rear board.

Lucie and Raymond, living in the Vichy zone, soon joined the resistance movement that formed in opposition to the Nazis and their collaborators. 'We had the incredible good fortune', writes Lucie Aubrac, 'to l i v e a s ourselves - we did not have to adopt false identities or go into hiding - until the spring of 1943'. (This) is her harrowing account of the months of her most audacious participation in the Resistance: the months when, pregnant with her s ec on d c hi l d, she planned and took part in raids to free captive comrades - including her own husband, under Nazi death sentence - from the prisons of Klaus Barbie, the infamous 'Butcher of Lyon'." AMONG THE GENTLY MAD: PERSPECTIVES AND STRATEGIES FOR THE BOOK HUNTER IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY., Basbanes, Nicholas A.
5 Basbanes, Nicholas A. AMONG THE GENTLY MAD: PERSPECTIVES AND STRATEGIES FOR THE BOOK HUNTER IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.
New York Henry Holt 2002 0805051597 / 9780805051599 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(A) delightfully discursive twenty-first-century guide to book collecting that combines a fresh respect for proven methods of acquisition with sound advice on how to use the exciting electronic tools now available. Drawing on the superb insight he has gathered from some of the world's most notable collectors, dealers, and librarians, (the author) offers a penetrating consideration of the pastime as it enters an era in which 'everything', it seems, has become collectible, an era in which the computer has become an indispensable tool. For newcomers, this book presents the rare opportunity to look over the shoulders of accomplished book hunters, all with their own successful strategies, as they pursue their prey, to glean some invaluable tips from the pros. Along with conveying the thrill of the chase, their stories remind readers that good books bought shrewdly are 'always' wise inventments. Traditionalists who believe that preparation and knowledge remain the soundest foundations for success will not be disappointed by Basbane's contention that for all the wonders of the Internet, there is still no substitute for going out into the field, meeting up with kindred spirits at book fairs, open shops, auctions, and flea markets, and learning how to 'handle the goods' from people who have been there. At the same time, he questions the relevance of a few axioms that have been accepted as gospel, while explaining the timeless wisdom of others." Tiny bump at top of front hinge, tiny scuff at top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

12 Burton, G. Allan. A STORE OF MEMORIES.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771017928 / 9780771017926 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." There is a non-authorial inscription on the half title page from one couple to another, stating "Father De C. is a good friend of ours, we hope you enjoy his story". "This is (the story of 'The People Beyond'), occasionally poignant, often shocking, but always heroic, from the opening scene of birth in an isolated iglu lit only by a flickering blubber lamp to the final disaster wrought by an epidemic that rages through a whole encampment. Raymond de Coccola was a missionary among these people for twelve years. In surroundings that could not have been more different from his native Corsica, he resolved to learn to understand the people by entering fully into their lives. He shared their quarters in iglu and tent, travelled with them on land and sea in the long winter and short summer, and took his full share in the skilled and unremitting labour of the hunt. Out of this experience comes an account of Eskimo life that will hold every reader fascinated." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Here, then, is the story of these men - not just the famous 'aces' such as Bishop, Barker, and Collishaw (though they are here too) - but of the other fighter pilots, the men who flew bombers, the Zeppelin and U-boat hunters, the indispensible observation aircraft pilots, and their observers."
