BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
1 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I., Ellis, John.
3 Ellis, John. EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I.
Pantheon, New York, 1976, first American edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0394496647 B&w photographs, map, diagrams. "(A) masterfully detailed reconstruction of what life was like for millions of men who lived and died in the trenches of World War I. Contin uing his trail-blazing approach to the study of war and militarism, Ellis reveals the physical and spiritual environment of this unique world, the rituals of battle, the habits of daily lfie, and the constant struggle of men to find meaning i n a w o r ld of excruciating boredom and impending death. (He) beings with a description of the physical construction of the trenches, their size and shape, their peculiarities and characteristics. The soldiers' daily life is succinctly portraye d: ho w t he y ate, drank, slept, joked, fought off rats and lice, how their sexual needs were met, and how they endured the marches and patrols. But it is in the ways men sought meaning in their daily lives that Ellis reveals the true nature of war f are . In an al yzing how the habits and regulations so dear to the military mind became entrenched in the organization of the battlefield, (this book) brilliantly depicts the instinctive desire of men in battle to create order out of chaos. Thr ou gh a n expl orat ion of the personal reflections of soldiers and the letters they wrote home, Ellis discovers a literature of compassion, courage, and a capacity to endure which arose from an environment of filth, decay, and death. It capt ures a w orld in whic h men fou ght, for reasons they hardly understood, for a future most had ceased to believe in by the end of the war." Small faint erased pencil marks on free front end paper, slight fading to boards edges, small area of colo r fad ing on re ar board. Dust jack et has been price-clipped, has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light fading to color on spine, faint small water mark on inside surface of rear panel. Very Good/Very Good-

Dundurn, Toronto, 2009, first edition.
236 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781550028539 "At a turning point in his life, George Fetherling embarked on an adventure to sail round the wrold on one of the last of the tramp freighters. The four-month voyage carried him 30,000 nautical mil es from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. The author captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship - the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramp ed q u ar te rs seem to exaggerate. Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, 1966, first edition.
136 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations by the author. "Mr Harris, (a rat) who has come into money, is eager to improve the social tone of his friends and neighbours, and to win for himself the recognition of an esta blished place in society; he aspires to a knighthood. His efforts to enlighten the deeply conservative little animals around him meets with little success: how he fares in his more ambitious aim is told in the pages of this story. Assist e d b y t h e ingenious poet (and valet, Beddoes Waterbrook, a rabbit) and by the accidental cross purposes that occur in the larger world of the Others, strange things happen and curious things emerge....To suspend disbelief and begin the story is t o e nt e r a ne w world: a world separate but intertwined with that of our everyday experience. There is a cricket match, of which the strangest thing is perhaps that it remains unrecorded by Neville Cardus, for it is impossible to imagine him ab se nt on su ch a n o cc asion. Then there is Old Beak and Claws (the owl) and his collection of snuff boxes....It may not always be, as Otter Mullet the fishmonger remarks on one occasion, 'good natural history', but it is as well to remem ber some tim es tha t t her e a re o the r sorts of truth (and the poetic not least among them) that are even more important to human beings than that particular variety found within the covers of text books...." 18 Steel, Flora Annie. With notes by R.C. Temple. TALES OF THE PUNJAB. TOLD BY THE PEOPLE.
London Bodley Head 1984 0370012712 / 9780370012711 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good - David Gentleman.
310 pp, 9 5/8" H. B&w illustrations. "This collection of Indian folk tales was made by an Englishwoman who went to India with her husband in 1867 and lived there for twenty-two years. The stories, almost all taken from the oral versions of local storytellers, were compiled with a 'double intention' - to interest children and to provide material for those studying folklore - and her collection still fulfills both these aims admirably. The simple, lively tales are excellent for reading aloud and are of particular appeal for parents, teachers and librarians seeking stories for children accustomed to Eastern traditions." Interior - very small crease at top corner of pages 1 to 30 otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - two small corner creases, light soiling/browning to bottom of text block, small bump at bottom of front hinge, small crease at bottom edge of rear cover.

A FROG HE WOULD A WOOING GO. ROM ORIGINALS DESIGNS BY H.L. STEPHENS., Stephens, H.L. Foreword by Philip Hofer.
19 Stephens, H.L. Foreword by Philip Hofer. A FROG HE WOULD A WOOING GO. ROM ORIGINALS DESIGNS BY H.L. STEPHENS.
Walker and Company, New York, 1967, first printing.
Unpaginated, 10" H, hardcover with pictorial front board - no dust jacket. "H.L. Stephens (1824-1882, originally from Philadelphia, later working in New York) was a very good illustrator who has been accorded faint praise by the critics. The reaso n is largely the result of the poor reproductions in which his work appeared. That is why this edition of 'A Frog he Would A-Wooing Go' uses the original drawings by Stephens, which are at the moment in private hands at Harvard University, r a t h e r t han the reproductive lithographs of 1865 which were made from them. The difference is striking; for these drawings compare with the works of Stephens' far more celebrated contemporary John Tenniel, whose 'Alice in Wonderland', Londo n , 19 65 , fi rs t s aw the light of day in the same twelve months." 15 full page monotone illustrations with verses underneath. Slight wrinkling to bottom edges of pages, slight waviness due to dampness at bottom fore-edge of pages - light wate rm ar k o n l as t p age , min or to light soiling on boards - mainly on rear board, tiny bump at top of spine. LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER., Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.)
20 Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.) LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER.
London Frederick Warne 1992 0723237778 / 9780723237778 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Beatrix Potter.
240 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). "The chief recipients (of her letters) were the family of her former governess, Annie Moore. Beatrix wrote them long, lively 'picture letters', copiously illustrated with witty drawings and full of funny anecdotes about her pets and her holidays. As she became established as an author she continued to write to young relatives, members of her publisher's family and the enthusiastic fans who loved her books. Sometimes these letters take the form of a supposed correspondence between different animal characters from the Peter Rabbit stories, all written in miniature with their own tiny envelopes. It is a measure of the delight with which Beatrix Potter's letters were received and treasured that so many of them have survived to this day. The picture letters and miniature letters (in this book) are shown in facsimile and (it) is illustrated with photographs and Beatrix Potter's own drawings. Judy Taylor has introduced each section with an account of the children who received the letters, many of whose stories have never been told before. The result is an intriguing and attractive book that reveals much new information about Beatrix Potter and above all demonstrates her unfailing power to beguile children and adults alike." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny dents on bottom edge of boards, some areas of faint discoloration at bottom of boards. Dust jacket has some edge wrinkling, light edge wear, one small taped tear at top edge, light dampness stains at inside bottom edge, light rub marks.
