6 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I., Ellis, John.
8 Ellis, John. EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I.
Pantheon, New York, 1976, first American edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0394496647 B&w photographs, map, diagrams. "(A) masterfully detailed reconstruction of what life was like for millions of men who lived and died in the trenches of World War I. Contin uing his trail-blazing approach to the study of war and militarism, Ellis reveals the physical and spiritual environment of this unique world, the rituals of battle, the habits of daily lfie, and the constant struggle of men to find meaning i n a w o r ld of excruciating boredom and impending death. (He) beings with a description of the physical construction of the trenches, their size and shape, their peculiarities and characteristics. The soldiers' daily life is succinctly portraye d: ho w t he y ate, drank, slept, joked, fought off rats and lice, how their sexual needs were met, and how they endured the marches and patrols. But it is in the ways men sought meaning in their daily lives that Ellis reveals the true nature of war f are . In an al yzing how the habits and regulations so dear to the military mind became entrenched in the organization of the battlefield, (this book) brilliantly depicts the instinctive desire of men in battle to create order out of chaos. Thr ou gh a n expl orat ion of the personal reflections of soldiers and the letters they wrote home, Ellis discovers a literature of compassion, courage, and a capacity to endure which arose from an environment of filth, decay, and death. It capt ures a w orld in whic h men fou ght, for reasons they hardly understood, for a future most had ceased to believe in by the end of the war." Small faint erased pencil marks on free front end paper, slight fading to boards edges, small area of colo r fad ing on re ar board. Dust jack et has been price-clipped, has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light fading to color on spine, faint small water mark on inside surface of rear panel. Very Good/Very Good-

London Windrow & Greene 1992 1872004067 / 9781872004068 Soft Cover Very Good
96 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "New archaeological discoveries, combined with reconstruction of and practical experiments with Roman military equipment are today changing long-held theories about what the Roman soldier actually looked like, how he lived, marched and fought In this book, for the first time, the 500-year story of the evolution of the Roman legionary, his armour and equipment is told not by means of the usual artist's impressions, but in vivid colour photographs of museum-quality reconstructions. Military historian and museum curator Daniel Peterson has been active in the field of 'living history' for many years; he is the organiser of one of the largest and most accurate Roman reconstruction groups, and a member of the world's only authentically reconstructed Roman cavalry unit. He has marched and ridden hundreds of miles across what was once the Roman Empire, reliving the day-to-day experiences of Roman soldiers of nearly 2,000 years ago. He and his comrades are much more than 're-enactors': authentically armoured and equipped, preparing and eating authentic rations, sleeping in authentically reconstructed leather tents, and carrying out rigorous marches, training and battle simulations, they are true 'experimental archaeologists' who are gaining new insights into the greatest army in Western history." LIFE IN MR. LINCOLN'S NAVY., Ringle, Dennis J.

Naval Institure Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1998.
202 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557507368 B&w illustrations. "Every aspect of the common sailor's life in the Union navy - such as recruiting, clothing, training, shipboard routine, entertainment, wages, diet, heal th, and combat experience - is addressed in this study, the first to examine the subject in such detail. The wealth of new facts provided here offers a fresh look at nineteenth-century social history, including such issues as racial integrat i o n i n the military. As he examines daily life in the Union navy, Dennis Ringle also calls attention to the enlisted sailor's enormous but often overlooked contributions to the development of the U.S. Navy as it moved fom wood and sail to stea m an d i ro n. Ringle, a marine engineer with more than twenty years of naval experience, describes the lives of the steam engineers whose work laler proved critical to the success of the ironclad monitors and the development of the powerful pre-d re adn ou gh t w ars h ips. His focus is on the sailors assigned to the western river vessels and the ships enforcing the blockade, and those dispatched to destroy Confederate commerce raiders. To reconstruct daily life, he draws on a large number of pub lis hed and unp ub lished diaries, journals, and letters. To put the information in context, he compares the sailor's life to that of a soldier's, including health conditions - to explain why, for example, fewer sailors died from disease tha n sol dier s."
