PERSIAN ART. CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN COLLECTION., Ettinghausen, Richard, introduction.
1 Ettinghausen, Richard, introduction. PERSIAN ART. CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN COLLECTION.
Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisboa, 1972.
Unpaginated, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket with additional clear mylar cover. Introductory essay plus colour and b&w illustrations with captions. "This Album, published on the occasion of the celebrations of the 2500th Anniversary of the Iranian Monarchy, presents a selection of the Persian works of art in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum from the sections of Ceramics, Textiles and Artistic Books. The criterion adopted for this selection was, generally speaking, the quality and a esthetic value of the items included and, for some of them, their rarity as well. In the Ceramics and Textiles sections the mains centres of production are represented, such as Rayy, Kashan, Tabriz, Herat and Isfahan, and in the Artistic B o o k s s e c t ion the important schools of Shiraz and Mashhad, as well as some fine specimens of 17th century bindings." Very Light browning in margins of pages and on edges of textblock, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good+

3 Michaelis, Ronald F. ANTIQUE PEWTER OF THE BRITISH ISLES. A BRIEF SURVEY OF WHAT HAS BEEN MADE IN PEWTER IN ENGLAND AND THE BRITISH ISLES, FROM THE TIME OF QUEEN ELIZABETH I TO THE REIGN OF QUEEN VICTORIA.
G. Bell and Sons, London, 1955, first edition.
118 pp + 40 b&w plates, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w drawings, plates. "The author has tackled the subject from an unusual viewpoint, so as to help collectors in examining the various objects made in pewter, particularly in the British Isles, in conjunction with the earlier recorded information about the methods of manufacture and the styles in vogue in bygone days. The records of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers of London have been freely drawn upon. Extracts f r o m t hem have been included, which should help students and collectors to decide for themselves the merits or otherwise of particular objects, and to gauge the comparative rarity of individual specimens of pewter-ware. The features which dist in gu is h t he pewter of one period from that of another are made clear, either in the text or by line and half-tone illustrations, and the various classes of pewter-ware have been grouped in separate chapters. There are also a full bibliography, in dex , a nd n ote s indicating the sources of the printed details." 4 Prescott, H.F.M. (Friar Felix Fabri.) ONCE TO SINAI: THE FURTHER PILGRIMAGE OF FRIAR FELIX FABRI.
London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1957 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
310 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, reproductions. "(Once) to Sinai went Friar Felix Fabri, among a score of pilgrims, starting from Jerusalem in late August of 1483. Of this pilgrimage, the Friar's account is, among all others, the fullest and liveliest. He kept a diary of the dreary trudge across the desert, using such commendable care and accuracy that the route of the pilgrimage can be traced by the modern traveller who knows the ground. At the Monastery of Saint Katherine, his patron Saint, he enjoyed to the full the various opportunities for strenuous climbing and for devotion. Another desert journey brought him and his companions to Cairo, one of the two capitals of the Moslem world, magnificent and squalid, swarming with strange and fascinating life and containing also monuments of a past so ancient that it was all a mystery to the beholders. From Egypt the pilgrims sail home in the great cargo galleys of the Venetians, laden with spices from the autumn market at Alexandria, and the Friar reports the discomforts, enjoyments and humours of a stormy winter voyage among the islands of the Aegean and Adriatic. At Venice, leaving the company of the pilgrims, he came even more closely in touch with the commerical world of the fifteenth century as a guest of the German merchants in their Fondaco at the foot of the Rialto bridge. It was in the company of these same merchants, returning across the frozen Alpine roads with their purchases of spices and Murano glass, that Felix Fabri came back at last to Ulm and to the dear friends in the Dominican House in the angle of the city wall. His account of that joyful homecoming, in itself a rarity in pilgrim literature, brings to a perfect close his long, rich book, full of curious information and humorous and delightful anecdote, which has been so superbly quarried and interpreted by Miss H.F.M. Prescott." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at corners of front board, very light browning to edges of text block - a few tiny foxing marks on top, minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has small chip at top of front flap fold, several edge tears with old tape stains - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light to moderate edge wear, light rubbing on spine.
