"Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." Macmillan Company of Canada, Toronto, 1944, reprint.
362 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w frontispiece. Concludes with Notes and Bibliography. "....an exciting action story of that dramatic period in North American history when the British and French vied with each other and with the native Indians for control of this rich land; a struggle that culminated in the American Revolutionary War which raged up and down the beautiful Mohawk valley for several years and culminated in the defeat of the British by the re bels and the departure of the decimated Indians westward. It is the story of Joseph Brant, Mohawk chief, who led the People of the Longhouse, the Six Nations' Indians, through fateful years of triumph and disaster, when excitement ran high a n d d a n g er lurked round every bend of trail or river. Realizing that to survive, the Indians must have gunpowder, Joseph bargained with the white men, and when the Indians decided to fight with the British, gunpowder was the deciding factor . Ho w b ri ll ia nt was Joseph's leadership, and how nearly the Indians came to winning the war for the British, is now told for the first time in this dramatic and colourful novel. The battle strategy which Brant devised would, if followed by t he Bri ti sh , h ave wo n t he war for them. 170 years later it has formed the basis of British commando tactics. It is also the story of Joseph's love for Catherine Crogan, the beautiful half-breed Indian whose brilliant spying for the British won this tr ibu te f rom Colo nel Butler: 'How else could two hundred Rangers and a handful of Indians have lived off the enemy and kept a frontier in flames for four years?'." Presidio, San Rafael, California, 1980.
198 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0891410821 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The heroism of William Darby and his Rangers in World War II has become legend. Experts at amphibious landings, night attacks, and clos e combat, they led the assaulting troops in the initial North Africa landings, fought in Tunisia, landed through concentrated hell at Gela, and were in on the final kill at Messina. At Sorrento they stood off forces that outnumbered them by a t l e a s t eight to one, and they spearheaded the desperate struggle at Anzio. This is Darby's own story of those climactic days, as dictated, just a few months before his death, to his friend General William H. Baumer. Baumer has added backgr ou nd in fo rm at ion about the war and on Darby's life, plus a summary of the exploits of other Ranger units. Darby was a combat leader in the highest tradition of the United States Army - a forceful, charismatic man who inspired loyalty and in t urn ga v e l oya lty to his troops. He refused battlefield promotions three times in order to stay with his Rangers. During his colorful and brilliant career, he received ten high military decorations, and was posthumously promoted to brigadier gen eral ." B&w maps/battle plans. "Historians and students of the Burgoyne Cam paigns have, for over 125 years, referred to the Battles of Saratoga as the most decisive series of engagements of the American Revolution....Yet, with all its acknowledged importance, the campaign remains one of the least accurately portr a y e d a n d m ost poorly researched in American history....To do battle with (the) myriad of myths, inaccuracies, and misinterpretations, Colonel John R. Elting brings an impressive arsenal of professional historical skills and background knowle dg e. .. .i t i s no t s urprising that his analysis of the practical problems of campaigning and logistics in the Northern Department is masterful. Supply and transportation problems played a major role in Burgoyne's defeat. By using 'Mad Johnn y' M'A lpi ne' s 'Na rr ati ve ' - extensively yet critically and in balance with a number of other primary sources - these problems are brought into proper perspective...(Colonel Elting dissects) the role of the British artillery on Sugar Loaf Hil l ( Moun t De fian ce ) in th e ev acu atio n of Fort Ticonderoga, the effect of the death of Jane McCrea on the mustering of the American militia against Burgoyne, and the tactical importance of the terrain west of the American fortified lines nea r th e Nei lson Farm. 12 Ferguson, John. With Stan & Shirley Fischler. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1989 0139206469 / 9780139206467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
334 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "If the Montreal Canadiens had a weakness in the early 1960s it was size. Too often, small Canadiens were being battered against the boards and checked out of action. In 1963, that problem was solved, and a big part of the solutions was John Ferguson. Chosen out of the American Hockey Leauge by Frank Selke, Ferguson showed up in training camp with a reputation as a good hockey player, and one who hadn't lost a fight in the AHL. He lived up to his reputation during his first game in Boston. At the opening faceoff, he got into a fight with Ted Green, which he won. Not only that, Ferguson proceeded to score twice in that game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. John Ferguson played for the Canadiens for eight years, until he retired in 1971. During those years, he shared in five Stanley Cups, played five hundred games, scored 145 goals and 158 assists, and spent 1214 minutes in the penalty box. An extremely aggressive forward, he acted as the club's policeman and extended his dislike of opposing players off the ice. Ferguson retired from the Canadiens in 1971 to begin a new career as a businessman. He came back to hockey as Coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers in 1976, then as General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and finally as General Manager of Team Canada. Having retired once more from hockey, (he) will dedicate himself to his second great sporting love, as President of The Windsor Raceway." Minor wrinkling to top/bottom of text block, tiny dent to top edge of front board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, minor edge browning light crease down front flap.

THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO., Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by.
13 Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by. THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO.
Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1962 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
368 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. "(T)ells the history of the town of York (Toronto) from the arrival of John Graves Simcoe in 1793 through the War of 1812 until news of the peace reached its citizens in the spring of 1815. The selection of contemporary documents attempts to show why York was chosen for a settlement in the first place, the kind of community that developed, and the effect of the War on that community. Apart from the normal problems connected with the establishment of any settlement, the officials of the town of York were faced with the necessity of creating a worthy capital city for Upper Canada at a time when Kingston, because of its pre-eminence as the military and naval centre of the province and its commercial prosperity, overhadowed all other settlements. The book also illustrates the gradual integration into a corporate body of many diverse elements - senior government officials, discharged soldiers, tradesmen, labourers - so that by 1815 the characteristics of modern Toronto were beginning to be evident in York. This collection of documents and the editor's very full Introduction will provide the student of local history with much primary material and the general reader with an interesting account of the early years of the modern metropolis of Toronto. Minor wear at corners, 50% of text block edges are lightly browned. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has one or two tiny edge chips and tears, light edge creases at top of rear panel, light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing.

New York ROC Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good
The first three volumes of the "Forest Kingdom" series, 6 7/8" H. 1. Blue Moon Rising - 476 pp, 1991, 2nd printing, ISBN 0451450957 - "Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. After all, a kingdom suffering from financial setbacks couldn't afford to have factions fighting over who was more worthy to rule as the next king. So Rupert was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself - a quest straight out of legends. But he also discovered the kind of things legends didn't tell, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the Night Witch - even the terrors hidden in the Darkwood. Rupert found his dragon and a princess to rescue, too. But the dragon turned out to be a better friend than anyone back at the castle. And with the Darkwood suddenly spreading its evil - with the blue moon rising and the Wild Magic along with it, Rupert was going to need all the friends he could get - ." 2. Blood and Honor - 332 pp, 1993, first printing, ISBN 0451452429 - "Jordan had always prided himself on his acting abilities, but now he faced the challenge of his career. Magicked into looking exactly like Prince Viktor, middle son of the recently assassinated King Malcolm, Jordan had been hired to pretend to be the prince as a war of succession raged at Castle Midnight. With both Viktor's (brothers) only too eager to dispatch their middle sibling, thereby increasing their own chances to gain the crown, Jordan soon found himself hard pressed to survive. And in a castle where the winds of Unreality might at any moment sweep down upon the unsuspecting, leaving behind little that was recognizably human, Jordan could only hope for a very short run in the role of prince and a quick escape from the kingdom with the fortune promised him for a successful job." 3. Down Among the Dead Men - 283 pp, 1993, 2nd printing, ISBN 0451453018 - "The Witch's Sight was their first warning of danger. The four Rangers had been sent to check on the border fortress which had fallen mysteriously silent. What they found defied explanation - but all too soon the nightmares that reigned here would seek to possess them. Even with the unexpect-ed aid of three outlaws - the first a keeper of the Wild Magic, the second the bearer of the last Infernal Device of the Demon Wars, and the third a master bowman - it was doubtful that the Rangers could stand against the creature that waited in the depths below the fortress. And if they could not find it before it woke, this most ancient beast would rise up to wreak destruction on the world." Interiors - very light browning in margins of pages, two volumes with browning on inside of covers, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exteriors - light browning to edges of text blocks, one volume with some very light soiling on fore-edge of text block, very light edge wear.

20 Horn, Bernd, Colonel et Balasevicius, Tony, Major, Editeurs. Avant-propos par Colonel David Barr. LUMIERES SUR LES FORCES DE L'OMBRE: UNE PERSPECTIVE CANADIENNE SUR LES FORCES D'OPERATIONS SPECIALES.
Toronto Dundurn 2007 1550026968 / 9781550026962 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - spine is slightly twisted, minor wear at bottom of spine.
