Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1971, first edition.
319 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 024664043X B&w plates, maps. "There has never been a company like the East India Company: it ruled over nearly one-fifth of the world's population, possessed its own army and navy, its own c ivil service, and even its own church. It became the greatest military power in Asia and had a revenue larger than that of Great Britain itself. This is the story of the London merchants who, in their persistent and dogged quest for trade w i t h t h e East, struggled with misunderstanding and suspicion, rivalry with the French and the collapse of the authority of the Indian emperors. The Company brought the brilliant military conquests of men like Robert Dlive and Warren Hastings, an d th e a cq ui sitions of Sir Stamford Raffles and men who spent their entire careers in its service. There were the conquests of the Wellesleys, the intrigues and battles for power with the British government, the prejudice and envy inspired b y t he re tu rn hom e o f wealthy retired employees, and the compromise which ended in the appointment of government selected Governors-General. The story of the East India Company is one of adventure, triumph and disaster, pride and loyalty, that spa ns more th an two hund red years of British history: it is also the story of the foundation of the British Empire in India." One small corner bump. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds. Very Good/ Very Goo d+

311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.
