THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY., Armitage, Michael.
1 Armitage, Michael. THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
London Brockhampton 1996 1860198511 / 9781860198519 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
288 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps. "Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps, the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed the tactics and weap- onry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300,000 personnel and 23,000 aircraft, but there was the immediate threat of stringent post-war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The Chief of Air Staff, Trenchard, needed a successful example of the potential of air power in order to guarantee future funding, and it came in the RAF air-policing role in the Near East. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years', despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearm-ament in both aircraft and ground forces, the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes one third of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout the Second World War, acknowledging the problems in command, strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces. Chapters cover the lean years from 1940 to 1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts, through the gradual build-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final, comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-1945 mark the high point of RAF history, but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft, the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from 'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force, the slow decline in British research and development, the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. The history of the RAF is fully detailed up to the present as one receding threat causes significant change in the number and type of aircraft needed to face the perceived new problems posed by developing nations." Tiny scuff on bottom of rear board. Dust jacket has minor wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny edge tear, very small dint on rear hinge, two tiny dints on rear panel, minor rubbing.

General Store Publishing House, Burnstown, Ontario, 1994.
171 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0919431836 "In a rarely acknowledged theatre of war, an Australian recounts his antic WWII experiences. A young member of the militia at the outbreak of war, John Blackwell played an active role in the early d ays of radar, serving as an oficer with the Australian Army, both at home and in England. Through his eyes, and keen sense of the ridiculous, we see the rise of technology in modern warfare, and the frequently humorous fallibilities of the m e n e m p l oyed to use it." F-15 EAGLE., Braybrook, Roy.
3 Braybrook, Roy. F-15 EAGLE.
Osprey, London, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 11 7/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1855321491 Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "Built to counter the seemingly invincible Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle has proven to be more than a match for any 'red' fighter interceptor for over 15 years. Carrying the all-seeing Hughes AN/APG-63 radar inside its massive radome, the interception capabilities of the Eagle have been matched only by its US Navy rival, the F-14 Tomcat. Although a large ae roplane, the Eagle is incredibly agile, with plenty of power from its twin afterburning Pratt & Whitney F-100 tubrofans. These allow a pilot to exploit the F-15 Eagle's suberb in-flight characteristics to the fullest extent. Entering frontline s q u adron service with the USAF's Tactical Air Command in late 1974, the F-15 has gone on to equip no less than six tactical fighter wings based in the USA, and one apiece in Germany and Japan. Five Air National Guard units also bolster the fron t li ne r anks with earlier version of the mighty Eagle. All USAF operators of the potent F-15 are graphically featured in this stunning volume. A chapter on the rarely illustrated Japanese Air Self-Defence Force complements the star-spangled F-1 5s ." Mi nor edge wear, small faint erasure mark at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, some areas of light wrinkling at top edge. Very Good-/Very Good

THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE., Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier.
7 Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier. THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE.
Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor.
9 Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor. FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Castle, Edison, NJ, 2000, reprint.
261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0785812083 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the s tory of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter pl a n e s in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the pl an es ( th e Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German a ce who be cam e an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hu gh Dowd ing , C om mander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually und erc ut by Nazi in c ompetence." Small Christmas gift inscription on half-title page, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing. "In April 1943, the Royal Canadian Navy assumed responsibility for Canadian Northwest Atlantic Command, the only operational area to be run by a Canadian Commander-in-Chief during the Second World War. (This book) describes the RCN's long, challenging journey from the outbreak of the war in September 1939 to the momentous events of Spring 1943. Base d on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, (it) describes the mobilization of the naval service during the first half of the war, measures its response to the demanding, ever-changing strategic situations that con f r o nted the Allies, and analyses the service of our ships and sailors on the North Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean seas as well as the defence of Canadian waters. With the main focus on the Battle of the Atlantic, this important and well-ill us tr at ed history demonstrates how Canadian naval forces proved indispensable to victory in that most critical campaign of the Second World War." IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC., Dunmore, Spencer.

McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." We are scarcely aware of the effects of such scientific reseach and planning on our daily lives; yet their impact is incalculable. The National Research Council in Ottawa has been responsible not only for research conducted in its own laboratories, but also in universities and regional laboratories across the country. The history of the Council is enriched by strong personalities such as Dr. Henry Marshall Tory, its first President and early champion of federal research. It chronicles the frustration of bureaucratic haggling, and the battles for improved funding and facilities to carry on important projects. It is the dramatic account of wartime work for more effective weaponry, on gas masks, radar and atomic fission. And it details the equally significant, but less known work on wheat rust, the difficulties of construction in the Canadian environment and wind tunnel experiments to ensure aviation safety." "World War I in the air is popularly recalled as a romance of dawn patrols and chivalrous duels between Spads and Fokkers over the Western Front. All but forgotten a re the day and night raids German airmen carried out against England with large bombers during 1917-1918. Based on firsthand accounts from British and German sources, (this book) explores all aspects of the first systematic strategic air cam p a i g n i n history, including the impact it had on the strategy and conduct of World War II. The daring airmen who pioneered this new mode of warfare flew twin-engined Gotha and Giant bombers. Their raids on London spurred the British to creat e th e Ro ya l A ir Force, the world's first independent air service, and the London Air Defense Area. Except for some technological refinements, notably radar, it was essentially the same air defense system that was to serve Britain so well in Wo rl dWa r II.
