WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON., Hamilton, James.
2 Hamilton, James. WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON.
London Pavilion 1992 1851457194 / 9781851457199 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine William Heath Robinson.
151 pp, 12 1/8" H. B&w and colour reproductions, photographs. "In this first fully illustrated monograph of William Heath Robinson's life and work, James Hamilton makes a refreshingly new exploration of the personality of this convivial family man and deeply serious artist. Through fascinating new insights, he traces the influences on his art, the development of his uniquely individual humorous style, and the unexpected path that his career followed: the switch from landscapes to book illustration, and early success as illustrator of Poe, Cervantes and Hans Andersen; the creation of his engaging character Uncle Lubin, his cartoons for magazines, and the First World War anti-German satires which earned him an enthusiastic following. Only after he had submitted his illustrations for a 'Complete Works of Shakespeare' in 1922, promptly cancelled, did Heath Robinson turn away from literary illustration. Then came the immensely popular books on golf and railways and motoring, murals and decorations for a liner, gadgets for the Ideal Home Exhibition of 1934, and a wealth of inspired magazine and commercial work. Hamilton rounds off his account of Heath Robinson's life and career with detailed appendices, including a chronology of his life, an important discussion of his sources, comprehensive bibliographies, and lists of his exhibitions, advertising work and ephemera. Published here for the first time are examples of the recently discovered Shakespeare illustrations." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

"A stunning achievement, 'Myth, Magic, and Mystery' brings together the work of nearly every prominent children's book illustrator of the twentieth century. Developed for a nationwide, touring exhibition beginning at The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia in June 1996, this book stands alone as a portable encyclopedia of the 'masters' of the genre. Included here are the works of such popular illustrators as N.C. Wyeth, Chris Van Allsburg, Maurice Sendak, Dr. Seuss, Edward Gorey, Tomi Ungerer, and others; a special feature of the book is a complete 'alphabet' created from a selection of the classic ABC books by the likes of Richard Scarry and 'Curious George' creator H.A. Rey. (This) will be a volume to be treasured alongside the classics themselves, a book to be sought after for moments of quiet contemplation or recollections of sheer joy." Throughout the book he mentions all of Rackham's most important work which has appeared in print and here is also a very full check list. The book is therefore invaluable to those who collect Rackham's originals and first editions." 5 Hunt, Peter, editor. Associate editors: Dennis Butts, Ethel Heins, Margaret Kinnell, Tony Watkins. With Gillian Avery, Anne Scott MacLeod, Julia Briggs, Zena Sutherland, Peter Hollindale, Michael Stone, Roderick McGillis & Beth Gilderdale. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1995 0192123203 / 9780192123206 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
378 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and color photographs and reproductions. "(T)races the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand from the very first printed books through to the present day. (This book) takes 'children's literature' to mean books designed for children as well as books for childhood, and so embraces everything from religious tracts to multi-media comics, from the 'classic' to the unashamedly popular. Written by leading experts, this survey shows that children's literature reflects how childhood has been defined, controlled, and appreciated at different times. It reveals how adults have explored questions of power, entertainment, sexuality, and equality through their writing for children, and demonstrates how the borders between what is adult and what children's fiction are routinely blurred. A series of chronological chapters charts the 'history' which begins in the sixteenth century with grammars and ABCs. We move from books of instruction through to fables and fantasies in the eighteenth century, from reward books and romance to school stories in the nineteenth, and on to comics, colour picture-books, and science fiction in (the twentieth century). Throughout the text, books, authors, illustrators, publishers, and children readers are discussed within their wider social, political, and economic environment. Richly illustrated in black and white and colour, and with a section on further reading, a full index, and a chronology which places books for children in their literary and political context, this is a fascinating study which will delight all readers, young and old." Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling; tiny dent on front hinge; slight fading to color on front panel, spine, top edge and flap-folds.

LONDON BUSES 1929-1939., Martin, Gavin.
6 Martin, Gavin. LONDON BUSES 1929-1939.
Ian Allan, London, 1990.
144 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711018804 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "....1929 was marked by a great leap forward in London bus design which followed the appointment of George John Rackham as Chief Engin eer at AEC. The following year saw the introduction of the Green Line coach services working across London from what were then sleepy country towns 30 or more miles distant from the fringes of the London General Omnibus Co's empire. The y e a r 1 9 3 0 also saw the first hesitant appearance of the diesel engine, quickly to be followed by the fluid flywheel, Wilson gearbox and hydraulic brakes. By the summer of 1932, a year before the formation of London Transport, some of the Ge ne ra l' s f am ou s Bl u ebird buses had these features in combination. London Transport quickly got to work replacing obsolete and non-standard buses and coaches. By the end of 1937 the General's NS type had all gone and by the summer of 1939 on ly a h and fu l of the v ehi cl es inherited from independent operators remained. The famous 10T10 type had replaced the first-generation Green Line coaches. New bus and coach designs of unorthodox layout - the TF type with the engine under the flo or, the CR ty pe with th e en gin e at the rear - were already in service. The side-engined AEC Q-type had come and gone as a production model, even though most of London Transport's 200 examples were to last until the 1950s. The incomparable RT type dou ble -de cke r whi ch w as to dom inate the London bus scene for nearly 40 years also appeared in 1939....takes the reader through these developments as they occurred, explaining their significance in language he or she will understand ." Faint ciga rett e od or, slight wavi ness t o edg es of texblock. Dust jacket has areas of light edge wrinkling. VG+/VG+

364 pp, 8 11/16" H. B&w illustrations. "(A)n account of the development of children's books in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia, (this book) has long been acclaimed as an invaluable guide and resource for parents, teachers, and students alike. The third revised edition faithfully maintains all the strengths of the earlier editions - concise, informative coverage of a vast subject - and includes a totally rewritten Part Four that provides a fresh, detailed investigation of aspects of the modern world most relevant to books for children and young people during the years 1945-1985. THE RHINEGOLD & THE VALKYRIE., Wagner, Richard. Translated by Margaret Armour.
10 Wagner, Richard. Translated by Margaret Armour. THE RHINEGOLD & THE VALKYRIE.
London William Heinemann 1920 New Impression. Hard Cover Good+ Good- Arthur Rackham.
160 pp, 10" H. Taupe-coloured cloth with black lettering/decoration on spine and front board, black publisher's emblem on rear board. Pictorial endpapers, b&w vignettes, 34 colour plates, tipped in on heavy stock with borders, tissue covers bearing captions (collated). This book contains the first two parts of 'The Ring of the Niblung': 'The Rhinegold: Prelude' and 'The Valkyrie: First Day of the Trilogy'. 'Siegfried: Second Day of the Trilogy' and 'The Twilight of the Gods: Third Day of theTrilogy' are not included. This English translation of Richard Wagner's epic opera is enhanced by Arthur Rackham's beautiful, detailed illustrations, which bring to life the gods, goddesses, giants, dwarves and other inhabitants of the drama. The plates are all clean and bright, although one has four tiny flecks of skim from the facing tissue at the top (probably as a result of the tipping-in process), one has a very small crease at the bottom left-hand corner and another has a very tiny piece of edge wear. The card stock has darkened, as seems common with this production, affecting the adjacent pages (see photograph). Some pages have light wrinkling (no creases) - mainly at corners. Moderate browning to edges of text block. Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Two margin tears (not affecting text or illustrations) have been repaired with archival tape. Dust jacket has very small chips at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, browning and some very light scuffs on spine, some light browning on panels, three water stains on spine - the largest and darkest at the bottom, light edge wear/wrinkling, small light stain on rear panel
