1 Bagnold, Enid. "NATIONAL VELVET".
New York William Morrow Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Laurian Jones.
303 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w drawings. "(Velvet Brown's) passion in life was horses. And so, when she won a notorious and unwanted piebald in a village lottery, (she) began to dream. And, since the breathless imagination of youth sees no obstacles as insuperable, Velvet's thoughts turned to the greatest race in the world - the Grand National. The Piebald (was) part carthorse, part Arab. Because he preferred sociable village life to lonely fields, he learned to jump fences. When Velvet took him on, he looked like a newly painted rocking horse. When he appeared at Aintree, the crowd looked at him and hooted. Enid Bagnold's clear, pungent style gives this joyous and captivating tale a rare flavor. It is rich with the comedy of life and character and poignant in its realization of the eager, indomitable trust of youth." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, two tiny edge tears, two soft creases at bottom of front panel.

2 Barris, Ted. RODEO COWBOYS: THE LAST HEROES.
Edmonton, Alberta Executive Sport Publications 1971 0919035094 / 9780919035096 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Photography by Robert Semeniuk.
144 pp, oblong (8 9/16" H x 10 1/16" D. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Rodeo is perhaps the world's greatest test of physical endurance and raw heroism. It is the participant, the cowboy, who has excited both young and old for decades. Year in and year out, these men test their strength against the power of animals in such rodeo events as steer wrestling and bronc riding. Sometimes they are rewarded for their efforts by a winning time, but often they receive little more than the appreciative applause of an enthusiastic audience before heading down the road to the next rodeo. What motivates these men to keep up such a grueling schedule? What has kept the tradition alive for so long? Through the combined effort of a gifted writer and an expert photographer, the exciting and entertaining world of the rodeo cowboy comes alive." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor edge wrinkling - crease at bottom edge of rear flap.

A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
3 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, small tear at botom of spine, very tiny white mark on front panel.

EARTH EAGLES., Bayliss, Marguerite. Drawings by Norman Reeves.
4 Bayliss, Marguerite. Drawings by Norman Reeves. EARTH EAGLES.
Henry Holt, New York, 1947.
53 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Green & white illustrations. "This is a moonlit story that belongs to time-to-be. It has a horseman named Esme O'Hara, two spirited fillies named Rainbow and Golden Ripple, and it has fair K entucky for its setting. Here in a soft summer night 'the fastest horses that ever ran on earth ran the race of races'. Only a great lover of horses, blessed with understanding of that noble breed, blessed with skill in words and touched w i t h m y s t icism could portray the wonder of that race. No man had ever seen before or would see again such a contest; the contenders are Rainbow, crippled, unable to race and dead of a broken heart - and Golden Ripple, Rainbow's twin, in th e z en it h o f he r tr aining, primed for winning and alive as an electric spark. They raced in the summer moonlight, swift, rhythmic, and beautifully they raced - not horses, but earth eagles. They raced as they had when they were glossy foals, a s c ham pio ns , fo r p le asu re, until they found rest and peace together. If you love horses, read this; if you love Irishmen, read this; if you have a feeling for imaginative words, read 'Earth Eagles'." Two tiny ring dints on free rear end pap er, two tiny sp ec ks on r ear pas tedown, light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear, several very small chips, light rubbing soiling - mainly on rear panel, darkening to flap-folds and edges, two tears at top of front panel - ta ped on i nside . 5 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE., Bobrick, Benson.
7 Bobrick, Benson. THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 2001, first British edition.
376 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297607723 "(T)races the story across the Protestant-Catholic divide of the sixteenth century as the struggle to complete a vernacular Bible was fought among competeing factions. As ( the author) tells in his enthralling history it was the culmination of centuries of work by various translators and a committee of scholars who in 1604 were brought together to collaborate on what became known as the King James version. Their t r a n s lation - substantially based on the work of John Wycliffe and William Tyndale and others - shaped English literature and speech for centuries giving us what have become such commonly used expressions as: 'labour of love', 'a thorn in the fle sh ', ' th e root of all evil', 'the fat of the land', 'the sweat of thy brow', 'to cast pearls before swine' and 'the shadow of death' among a host of others. (This book) shows the profound effect the English Bible had on law and society. By giv ing ev ery li terate person access to the sacred text it helped to foster the spirit of inquiry through reading and reflection. Once individuals were free to interpret the word of God according to the light of their own understanding, they began to q uest ion the authority of their inherited institutions, both religious and secular. This led to the reformation within the Church, the rise of constitutional government in England and ultimately the end of the divine right of kings. In Benson Bobr ick's vie w th e English Civil War was fought in the light (and shadow) of such ideas, culminating in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. 'The Making of the English Bible' is about a crucial epoch in the history of Christianity, about the Engli sh lan guage and s ociet y, and about a book that changed the course of human events." Minor indentation on rear board, a few very small bumps (one with tiny tear) at top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of hinges and fl ap-fold s, one tiny tear a rchivally taped, tiny corner crease at top corner of front flap. Very Good/Very Good+

12 Byrd, Richard Evelyn. Foreword by Rear Admiral William A. Moffett. SKYWARD: MAN'S MASTERY OF THE AIR AS SHOWN BY THE BRILLIANT FLIGHTS OF AMERICA'S LEADING AIR EXPLORER. HIS LIFE, HIS THRILLING ADVENTURES, HIS NORTH POLE AND TRANS-ATLANTIC FLIGHTS, TOGETHER WITH HIS PLANS FOR CONQUERING THE ANTARCTIC BY AIR.
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1928 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Poor
359 pp, 8 3/4" H. Bright blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board, top edge blue. Map endpapers, b&w photographs and photogravure frontispiece portrait of author (only the first printings contain this). "Almost since he could toddle Byrd has been an adventurer. At the age of twelve he travelled around the world alone. At Annapolis he was an athlete of note. In his seafaring years that followed he was cited twenty-one times, including the Congressional Medal of Honor. He went to England to help fly the ill-fated ZR-2 to America. He was assigned to the transatlantic flight of the Navy's NC boats in 1921. As flight leader with the National Geographical Arctic Expedition in 1923 he and his plane flew 6000 miles over the icy deserts of the north. On May 9th, 1926, he and Floyd Bennett circled the North Pole for the first time by air. In June, 1927, after forty-two terrible hours in the air he crossed the Atlantic from New York to France. Now the South Pole! With ships and scientists, planes and sledges, and his old pilot Bennett, he determines next winter to enter this facinating realm. Full of action and adventure as it is, Byrd's story does not fall into the class of simple biographical yarns. Using the stark reality of his recurring enterprises as a background he paints a splendid picture of man's struggle to conquer the air and of the grand victory of human ingenuity over gravity that has sprung in a brief span of twenty-five years from centuries of despairing effort. And finally, because Byrd is an idealist as well as a rugged explorer, he projects his flying aspirations into the future." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, light edge wear, slight fading to spine color, previous owner's initials in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has large chips/tears, edge creasing/wrinkling, rubbing, creasing on front panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

17 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.
