1 SO MANY: A FOLIO DEDICATED TO ALL WHO SERVED WITH RAF BOMBER COMMAND, 1939-45.
Macmillan, [Toronto], (1995).
276 pp, folio, HC. "The central theme is the courage of thousands of men - most of them from ordinary backgrounds in Britain and the Empire, but including important groups from countries overrun by Germany - who survived one of the most severe and prolonged periods of physical danger and mental strain any group of people has ever been asked to bear. Over 55,500 of them were killed. The principal content allocates ten pages to each of 25 aircrew, who, often straight from school, served as pi lots, navigators, bomb-aimers, signallers, flight engineers and air gunners in Bomber Command in World War 2. Each has a biography, a photograph of his memorabilia, a handwritten reminiscence and a painted silhouette showing him as he i s i n 1 9 9 4 . Thus he will make his mark in history, and you, the reader, will be able to judge what manner of man he was. You will also be able to decide how much you owe to men like him for the fact that today Europe is entirely free, and no t e ns la v ed u nd er a single master-race." Ribbon marker. A serene, starched nurse soothes the brow of a grateful patient as the lamplight flickers. Bleep! Cardiac arrest! It is in these frantic seconds that a sister, weighing her responsibilities and priorities, must make efficient, professional decisions - deci s i o n s w h ich could mean the difference between life and death. In her autobiography, Joan Ash contrasts her wartime nursing experiences in India with the National Health Service as she found it on her return in 1973. 7 Bagnold, Enid. "NATIONAL VELVET".
New York William Morrow Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Laurian Jones.
303 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w drawings. "(Velvet Brown's) passion in life was horses. And so, when she won a notorious and unwanted piebald in a village lottery, (she) began to dream. And, since the breathless imagination of youth sees no obstacles as insuperable, Velvet's thoughts turned to the greatest race in the world - the Grand National. The Piebald (was) part carthorse, part Arab. Because he preferred sociable village life to lonely fields, he learned to jump fences. When Velvet took him on, he looked like a newly painted rocking horse. When he appeared at Aintree, the crowd looked at him and hooted. Enid Bagnold's clear, pungent style gives this joyous and captivating tale a rare flavor. It is rich with the comedy of life and character and poignant in its realization of the eager, indomitable trust of youth." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, two tiny edge tears, two soft creases at bottom of front panel.

447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. 9 Barbeau, Marius. New Introduction by George Clutesi. THE DOWNFALL OF TEMLAHAM.

253 pp, 7 5/8" H. Colour plates. "First published in 1928 (this) is the work of the distinguished Canadian ethnologist, the late Dr. Marius Barbeau. A prolific writer whose contribution to our knowledge of Indian and French-Canadian folklore, arts and crafts is unsurpassed, Barbeau offers in this book a sympathetic and dramatic portrayal of a vanquished race in conflict with itself. Based on the facts of a serious disturbance among the Indians of the Upper Skeena River in 1886, it is the story of Kamalmuk and Sunbeams, husband and wife, separated by opposing ambitions and the ambivalence of the Indian's attraction to the benefits of the white man's civilization and his revulsion against its excesses. Barbeau weaves into his interpretation of Temlaham, the ritual of authentic tribal customs and the expressive but poetic language of a people in anguish." Faint tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small glue stain on rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, slight fading to spine color, very light wear and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small tear archivally taped.

RHODESIA: THE ROAD TO REBELLION., Barber, James.

Oxford University Press / Institute of Race Relations, London, 1967, first edition.
338 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "As a result of the dramatic Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Ian Smith and his Cabinet in November 1965, Rhodesia is now the centre of an international crisis, a focal point in a rapidly changing scene. But the act should not be seen as an isolated incident; it is part of a political and constitutional pattern which has developed gradually, and of which the outstanding feature is the division between Europeans and Africans. In thi s careful and thorough study Mr. Barber traces the various strands which make up this pattern, analysing the origins of this tragically divided society and its relations with the rest of Southern Africa, and giving a detailed account of the politi c a l developments since 1960 which culminated in the U.D.I." EARTH EAGLES., Bayliss, Marguerite. Drawings by Norman Reeves.
11 Bayliss, Marguerite. Drawings by Norman Reeves. EARTH EAGLES.
Henry Holt, New York, 1947.
53 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Green & white illustrations. "This is a moonlit story that belongs to time-to-be. It has a horseman named Esme O'Hara, two spirited fillies named Rainbow and Golden Ripple, and it has fair K entucky for its setting. Here in a soft summer night 'the fastest horses that ever ran on earth ran the race of races'. Only a great lover of horses, blessed with understanding of that noble breed, blessed with skill in words and touched w i t h m y s t icism could portray the wonder of that race. No man had ever seen before or would see again such a contest; the contenders are Rainbow, crippled, unable to race and dead of a broken heart - and Golden Ripple, Rainbow's twin, in th e z en it h o f he r tr aining, primed for winning and alive as an electric spark. They raced in the summer moonlight, swift, rhythmic, and beautifully they raced - not horses, but earth eagles. They raced as they had when they were glossy foals, a s c ham pio ns , fo r p le asu re, until they found rest and peace together. If you love horses, read this; if you love Irishmen, read this; if you have a feeling for imaginative words, read 'Earth Eagles'." Toronto Ryerson Press 1957 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
215 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w illustrations. "This is the story of the life of Josiah Henson, an ex-slave who escaped to Canada and founded the Negro refugee colony in Dawn, Ontario. Using his own memoirs and other contemporary sources, Miss Beattie has given us an authentic and exciting picture of this arresting figure in Canadian life, whose early years provided Harriet Beecher Stowe with material for her character of Uncle Tom. In its mixture of tragedy and happiness, of hope and despair, of grim struggle and triumphant achievement, this is the saga of an oppressed race in its slow and painful advance to freedom, in which Canada played so notable a part." 143 pp, 8 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "Alan Marshall is called 'Gurawilla' or 'Song maker' by the natives of Arnhem Land. He and Sreten Bozic have studied the few remaining nomadic aboriginal tribes in Australia and have come to love and admire their culture. This book is the result of their knowledge of, and respect for, a race which had and still has vastly different - and perhaps superior - ideals from those of the white invaders who commandeered their lives and land. For, until the advent of the white man, the Aboriginals lived in complete accord with nature. Australian tribal society was uniquely a-materialistic and egalitarian, and was characterized by a rich ceremonial culture and religious life. It emphasised mystical communion with the environment rather than individual achievement and the glorification of human prowess. Human life was always considered to be part of the natural cycle and the happiness and gentleness of Aboriginal society indicates the worth of a traditional naturalistic culture. These myths, the foundation of Australia's ancient cultural past, must live again in their fulness. Perhaps this book may help such a rejuvenation and create just a little understanding." 15 Brandford, Ernle. WALL OF ENGLAND: THE CHANNEL'S 2000 YEARS OF HISTORY.
Country Life, London, 1966, first edition.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions. "(V)ividly describes how the 350-mile-long English Channel has moulded the fate of Britian since, some 8,000 years ago, the Atlantic tide-race eventually severed our island from the Continent. Through the centuries it has been the moat against many enemies, the arena of battling navies, the highway of trade, the jumping-off point for countless ventures across the world, the way of life of a great maritime race. On the 'Chops of the Channel' Britain has fought not only against the might of foreigners - French, Spanish, Dutch - but also against the natural hazards of gale and fog. Throughout the long Age of Sail and after, na v a l n e e ds and the demands of traders decided the varying fortunes of towns and dockyards of the coast - the Cinque Ports, Southampton, Portsmouth, Plymouth - and it was a passion for the 'new-fangled sea bathing' that started the growth of the ' wa te r in g re sorts' from former fishing villages. (The author) tells of the activities of the press gang, the long struggles between smugglers and Excisemen and the spread of the sport of yachting in the 'off-shore island of Europe'....No lon ger th e s up rem e bas tion against an enemy in these days of nuclear threat, the English Channel, whose last great occasion was the D-Day invasion of Normandy, is restricted to battles of trade." Spring Books, London, n.d.
204 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. One of 'The Halcyon Library' series. "The 'Savages on Gale Island' are the Rocksavage twins, Thom and Grizelda, who are to spend a few weeks on this remote island to recover from an attack of measles. The children are delighted with the island itself, but become even more excited - and somewhat bewildered - when they find themselves involved with gypsies, professor s , m y s t e r ious strangers and all kinds of puzzling goings-on, in a race for an unknown goal. Their natural curiosity and great common sense lead the two children to discover a strange secret passage running beneath their castle home; a myste ri ou s l ik en es s be tween someone long gone from Gale Island and someone recently installed there; and many other seemingly unconnected mysteries....Perhaps the strangest feature is the series of metal discs which Grizelda finds as the hunt pro gre sse s and wh ich sh e lea rns to interpret as a progress report of her rivals!" McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1965, first edition.
140 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In today's nuclear era, in a world now spending roughly $120 billion annually preparing for war, all other questions fade into insignificance in comparison with the problem of preventing conflict. Yet in this race toward annihilation Canada, with a limited budget and modest military strength, could carve for herself a new, significant and perhaps decisive role, if her military and political leaders could set aside tradition-bound c o n c e p t s , concentrating instead on the unique position Canada can hold on a world scale. Penetrating to the heart of our 'defence muddle', stripping away the military jargon that surrounds military discussions, Mr. Brewin traces Canada's m il it ar y ro le s in ce the formation of NATO in 1949, shows why the United States' concept of 'massive retaliation' has lost all practical meaning, and urges Canada to divorce herself from policies which are obsolete, provocative, and meaningles s. Sp eak in g a s o ne of the political leaders whose thoughts may play a major role in shaping this country's defence policies in the future, he outlines with persuasive clarity the factors which make it imperative for Canada to abandon tactical nu clea r we apo ns a nd c onc ent rate on developing a compact, efficient, highly mobile non-nuclear fighting force capable of tackling 'brushfire wars' anywhere in the world." RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE., Bull, Theodore, editor.
18 Bull, Theodore, editor. RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE.
Michael Joseph, London, 1967, first edition.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, fold-out map showing land apportionment in 1965. "The first and major portion of this book consists of a factual account of some of the more important political, social and economic developments in Britain's colony of Southern Rhodesia from the time of the first European occupation to the present day. It draws on historical records, official reports and government statements to explain what the Land Apportionment Act is, why it was introduced, and what its practical effects are; to examine local government, the educational systems, and economic development in urban and rural areas; to analyse the effect which some of the past and present legislation has on the living a n d working conditions of black and white Rhodesians; and, in the process, to illustrate the political attitudes of Europeans and Africans, and the separate development of the racial communities. (It) collates much of the kind of factual material w hi ch used to appear regularly in the Salisbury journal, the 'Central African Examiner', before it ceased publication. UDI and the censorship imposed under the Emergency regulations in November, 1965, resulted in the 'Examiner's' December issue bei ng heavily cut - about half the material submitted for censorship was banned. The journal's publishing company launched a court case to challenge the legality of censorship and so, by implication, of the Rhodesian regime, but this was unsuccessful and the December 1965 issue was therefore (its) last. The factual material in this book was prepared by former contributors to the 'Examiner' and edited by Theodore Bull, the sponsor and former editor of the journal. His own personal assessment o f Br itish policy on Rhodesia, before and since UDI, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock, forms the second part of the book. His conclusions are controversial, and readers of widely differing political views could be equally shocked by t hem, but they may stimulate a healthy reassessment of attitude towards the whole unhappy Rhodesian situation." 184 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Mr. Bull, editor of the 'Central African Examiner' (one of Salisbury's leading magazines before it ceased publication late in 1965 as a result of rigid censorship by the Rhodesian government), presents the first authoritative explanation of the Rhodesian situation. Most of his book is a factual account of the important political, social, and economic changes in Britain's colony from the first European settlement to the present day (1967), with particular attention to the separate develop-ment of the racial communities. The second part of the book is an assessment of British policy before and after Rhodesia's Universal Declaration, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock."
